Winter-January 2026 Transfer Window Rumours ...

That’s what NJ says about Berry at the moment, can’t believe I tried to give Luke berry a bit of credit when the lineup came out, he really didn’t back it up. I’ve got this horrible feeling we are going to be underwhelmed by our signings.Covered_End_Lad said:Coventry is the first name on the team sheet for me, maybe just behind Lloyd in that aspect.0 -
The flip side of long contracts, is that you get stuck with players you don't want. Ahadme, for example, was given a 4 year contract, so still has 2.5 years left.Powell2ThePeople said:
If he's on a long term deal, he becomes more of an asset. As do they all. Miles' 3 year deal was very important for just that reason. The Red Robin said:

Goes unnoticed by most of the opposition I would guess because his job isn't overly flashy. Would love to get him on a long term deal.Chunes said:Interesting that nobody ever worries about losing Conor Coventry in a transfer window.
upgrade.
We've lost too many over the last few seasons after their contracts ran down. CBT, Dobson, Small, etc.
I realise we got compensation for Small (how much was that btw?), and that we can't make players sign contracts, but they were all wanted at a higher or equivalent level. So we must do everything we can to protect our assets.
We signed Kelman, JRC, Knibbs and Apter last summer on 4 year contracts. The latter 3 have had very few minutes.2 -
CC is a vital player for us his work rate and ability to break up play is essential when he is not on the pitch we really miss him6
-
It does take the pressure off them to succeed immediately as well though. Jones made a comment after the Coventry game that JRC has been brought in to do well for Charlton over 4 years so his slow breakthrough will hopefully just be a footnote in his Charlton career. Rob Apter is 22 and learning a new role in the Championship. He was playing L1 last season and L2 the season before and has so much time to still produce for us once he's adapted and developed. Under the likes of Roland we'd bring players in on 2 year deals so if they were rubbish for a season that was half their time gone and we'd be trying to flog them at a loss, we never developed anyone and it left us always disjointed and needing to overhaul every summerkillerandflash said:

Completely agree. Without the four you've mentioned as priorities I think we'll be in real trouble, unless we get insanely lucky with injuries (perhaps even then).cantersaddick said:I don't expect there is masses of cash available. And tbh I wouldn't want to throw it around anyway as you get much less options and worse value in January. I expect us to be smart about it. One or two experienced loans to see us through to the summer, another one or 2 potentially with the option to buy/sign in the summer. Maybe 1 or 2 on perms/small fees. I would hope there is a bit of cash in case we find someone of real quality available for a good price at either LWB or CM - 2 positions we need not just short term reinforcements but longer term roles filling.
My priorities would be:
LWB - Edwards mould. Battler, more like a LB in some sense but still good enough going forwards.
CB - either, similar to Burke who can cover RCB and CB or similar to Ramsay and can cover RCB and RWB
RWB - either Bree or another.
Striker - experienced physical presence, hold up play important. Take some pressure off Miles
Nice to haves:
Another RWB - so we don't have to play Bree every game and don't have one player as back up for multiple positions. Apter still an option here but allows us to have the more defensive option on this side evennin an injury crisis.
CM- the Doc role but with a bit more championship quality. Would really help us but unlikely to be available in Jan.
For the CM with champ quality the specific quality we need is the ability to play forward. People say that isn't how Jones sets us up but JRC has shown there are opportunities there in the system if someone in the middle can pick a pass and we have the players (CK in particular) to thrive off that2 -
Is this recent, or back when CBT left us? - Very bizarre either way, gicen that Corey hasn't exactly been standing out at rgis level.MarcusH26 said:
A lot of stuff about us being a small club that held CBT back etc and derby being a proper clubForeverAddickted said:

Is it 'very harsh' to say he's not elite? He's not. Neither are arguably most/all of our team.cafc_se7 said:
Very Harsh. Take Conor Coventry out of our side and we are f**ked IMO. The work he does off the ball is unmatched!Crispywood said:
West Ham have a ridiculous sell on when it was reported he was going to Wednesday apparently it was 50% before it broke down and we swooped in so firstly gives us far less incentive to sell if it’s a hefty sum.Chunes said:Interesting that nobody ever worries about losing Conor Coventry in a transfer window.Think the fact we lost CBT for peanuts at the time and Dobson who was also a brilliant CDM and imo better than Coventry (but that’s a different debate) and we didn’t get worse also unconsciously plays a part in not being as fearful losing a player like Coventry. Also Coventry is solid but he’s not an elite midfielder, JRC has started 3 league games and on Thursday put in a better performance than I’ve seen from Coventry all season1 -
There were a few points yesterday where, as someone said above, Berry really did use his footballing brain which is a scarcity in our squad. Taking the ball out of defence, he resisted the urge to boot it aimlessly upfield, took it forward and found a perfect pass out to the wing. Too much of a tendency for me to grab hold of the opposition, as he can’t keep up otherwise, but you’re obviously missing a lot of what he does bring to the team, especially when so many of them don’t have that nous he does.Sword65pf said:

Think it gets forgotten how CC was the player’s player of the year last season even ahead of Jones. Says it all for me really.21

No I’m not missing anything, I already said when there was a bit of unhappiness about him being picked, I’d mentioned his value and quite a few seemed to agree. however his overall performance probably didn’t do him any favours yesterday.TelMc32 said:

for reference: Can I just say although we may prefer an alternative to Berry starting, it doesn’t suddenly make him a bad footballer.3 -

Its when he's absent, and the team suffers that you realise how important he isThere have been a couple of times over the last month as well where his tracking back has been superb, and he's got crucial blocks in... There was a moment yesterday where he did that, didnt get the block, as that was Burke, but he helped avoid the Blackburn player from having a free strike at goal4

Didn’t Cawley report that we signed Coventry without a fee on basis of agreeing 100% of any sell-on to WHU? So I suggest we focus on keeping him, like Liverpool and JoGo.1

Not 100% I don’t think as that would be crazy but certainly a large chunkWeegie Addick said:Didn’t Cawley report that we signed Coventry without a fee on basis of agreeing 100% of any sell-on to WHU? So I suggest we focus on keeping him, like Liverpool and JoGo.10 -

Where’s the transfer thread? I keep clicking on this and it seems to be the Connor Coventry thread, is there an issue with the links?18

Exclusive, just spotted at The valley...Bailey
Four footed and quick, can play LWB, and bites yer leg at the same time...7 -
Looks more like a midfield terrier.eastterrace6168 said:

He has a brain like Berry. The amount of fouls he conceded was in some part to make up for others mistakes. He saw that the turnover could become a danger and jumped in, taking a booking for the team on one occasion. He isn't top class, but he's a functional need in the middle of the park. Of course we can do better, but at what cost, and which other part suffers if the money is spent there?cafc_se7 said:

Carrick was soo good at intercepting play, can see similarities in that sense but he's lightyears behind carricks passing ability lolForeverAddickted said:MartinCAFC said:Think it gets forgotten how CC was the player’s player of the year last season even ahead of Jones.
