Atmosphere at the Valley

From where you sit, what do you think of it?
NJ was playing cheerleader to a sedate West Stand yesterday. The Covered end songs seem to peter out quietly these days. It appears a bit flatter than I had expected at this stage.

From where i sit in west upper, people clap along and reluctantly might join in with a ‘come on you reds’ but thats about it 😂

I didn’t go to the Cov game but generally this season the atmosphere has been really good . It’s understandable that the fans are a little nervous after a poor run . You will never get the Curbs stand or West stand singing much but that’s always been the case .9
-
that is to do with a number of things, first the age profile, second the casual Charlton fans who who may come for one or two games in the season, second the high proportions of overseas visitors who include a football match in the holiday, we even had a large group of visitors from an Australian girls team in the upper west.2121 said:From where i sit in west upper, people clap along and reluctantly might join in with a ‘come on you reds’ but thats about it 😂0 -
Did sound a bit flat on Sky yesterday but that's to be expected with recent results and a large % being hungover3

First half was dreadful but I think the early goal caused that.
Second half was pretty decent in the covered end upper I thought8 -
It's awful.
Covered End upper is usually fine and they give it a real go. It's a morgue when you sit in West and East.
And I genuinely think we might be one of the only teams where our fans don't stand up behind the goal. 5 minutes to go, we are in the ascendancy, and it's musical chairs. Imagine being a player and you're attacking your home goal and most of the fans are seated and not singing or showing any emotion, hardly gets the juices flowing.
Can't wait to get out of it for next season. Seated area and there is no leg room. It would be class if everyone stood, but it is what it is. I can't explain how much I fkn despise the whole standing up when the players attack the covered End, and then immediately sitting when the ball goes away. Ideally the whole area would stand, but I would rather sit than have to stand up and sit down 20 times again.
Overrall I think our home atmosphere is poor. Away we are very decent and one of the better groups from my experience, our home is one of the worst I've witnessed for the relative size of our club. On par with the likes of Barnsley with the exception of the Covered Upper and a few Covered Lower areas.16 -
On a positive - the lights and advertising hoardings look pretty cool. (Shot taken from your video @Braziliance)

Would standing up make the atmosphere any better at home games? Possibly but the authorities would not be impressed with the club as shown in October 2023
Since then Safe Standing has come into the top of the Upper Covered End. The only way around it would be to make the whole end safe standing but then you reduce your capacity and revenue coming in

Think it’s generally ok, it’s going to ebb and flow like most grounds, recently our chips have been pissed on pretty early in games which doesn’t help, would be nice to have the sound more from all sides but that’s not ever really happened apart from playoff games.1
-
You don't seem to be much of a fan of your fellow fans. Which is odd, as presumably you want them to watch your videos?Braziliance said:It's awful.

Having been to Norwich and Portsmouth, The Valley feels like the Estadio Monumental when Boca are in town.
I used to sit in the West Stand in the PL days with the old man and it was always quiet. I'm not sure much has changed for us in terms of noise since we came back to The Valley. And I don't know what people expect to be honest.
Generally, I think most grounds now have lost a certain amount of atmosphere over recent years.5 -
Nonsense. I love Charlton fans. Repeatedly credit our personalities to other fans, refer to Charlton fans as 'my people' have a ton of friends at Charlton, repeatedly credit our away atmospheres, which are all Charlton fans.Off_it said:

Just wish we were more passionate at home. There is an undeniable link between standing up and sitting down for atmospheres.
We are in a tough league, that extra crowd backing (like at Brum and Ipswich away) could motivate the players.

You only need to look at a gig, festival, or some of the best 'ultras' in football. The best atmospheres are always people standing up. Gives your body more freedom and vocals travel better. (That's science.)

The shouting and chanting is vile.13

So why can't you just accept that people like to watch their football in different ways? Their way might not be for you, but so what?Braziliance said:

The thread is about the atmosphere of the ground and it's relative to the atmosphere if people stand or sit.
I fully understand not everyone can stand and may have issues in doing so, so my posts will never be aimed towards them, but it is my belief/preference if you can, you should, as it does make a difference in generating atmospheres. That's why you see players try and encourage fans to chant and stand up.
I think you would struggle to find a stand behind the goal in English football that don't stand as it does genuinely make a difference.1 -
It was brilliant at the beginning of the season. But has been poor ever since the Southampton game. The second half yesterday was okay but we really do need to get The Valley rocking again.3
-
Atmosphere generation is a two way street by the way, the players need to give the fans something to shout about if they want 90mins worth of noise, on various occasions this season when things are going tits up the fans have tried to up the atmosphere. So I think it’s a bit unfair to put the boot just into our own home support.9

Massively disagree, in most of the away games I've been to this season, the home end has been quiet. Or there's a tiny group of singers.Braziliance said:It's awful.

The best home end I've encountered in recent years was Stockport's last year, but then that was a club on the rise and full of positivity. Coventry's home support was quite loud too, but that's another club "living the dream".
The lower Covered End, with its poor rake and legroom, is an obvious place for a safe standing home end, but the "singers" chose the upper tier for its better acoustics, and instead the club made the lower CE the "cheap" section.13 -

Maybe it is nothing more than tiredness setting in.
Perhaps insist on not selling americanos with milk.
Thereby delivering a greater caffeine hit pre/during the game?
Ditch the milk, awake the noise.9 -

I was astonished at how quiet Norwich were when we played there a couple of weeks ago. Sold out stadium, Boxing Day football and hardly a peep until they scored (and even then…). In comparison I actually think we’re pretty good, but I sit in the north upper so that may distort things.killerandflash said:

Im not complaining about the west upper being like the way it is, just responding to the question with my observation.
I think overall our atmosphere is above average. Not bad.
Although agree with brazilience that lower north should be safe standing minimum (id say lower part of quadrants as well). Will benefit the atmosphere (and the 12th man)
have always said this since had a season ticket in north lower during prem days and it had no atmosphere.
pardew was quite vocal on this wasnt he when manager? Sure he said he couldnt understand why we give the away fans the jimmy seed and didnt he try to relocate them to east or west? Away fans love coming to charlton, that traditional stand can act like the 12th man/ the kop. You can see why.Little %’s7 -
