Does what it says on the tin Kelman is a great finisher but gives defenders a very comfortable time Dykes threw himself at everything today

Basically the perfect player to throw on when you need to change it up. The assist is a prime example that it’s not just winning a header, it’s where you direct it, that counts
  • Thought he was really good today. Not just the assist - he looked hungry, was shouting at his team mates too. Is clearly not here to make up the numbers.
  • Proper Nathan jones type of player. I like what I see. Not quite as good in the air as leaburn but still v sharp and a nuisance

His movement was excellent, and certainly looked fit. Tried to gee up the rest of the team, too. A better than decent debut...

I'm waiting for Golfie to come on and say that a real striker would have gone for goal, rather than lay it on a plate for a midfielder...

Dykes doing exactly what he was brought in to do, create chances for others.

Is that the quickest a Charlton career has ever produced a goal involvement?

Mbick against Cray Valley might be close???
  • Instant impact with his perfectly placed nod on after brushing the CB aside.  Hopefully a very good signing once he's fully fit and match sharp.

Pleasantly surprised by his play today, was a pain in the arse, made a couple of intelligent runs, loved it when he flattened the centre back that tried to block him off when they passed back to the keeper. Had good presence in the box, knock on for the goal as the main example. As I said pretty underwhelmed to see him arrive but said I’d give him the benefit of the doubt, he has started to change my thoughts already. Not that it really matters what I think.😂

I’d start him Tuesday with Kelman, Leaburn on about 70 minutes then Miles to start at The Den.

I would start Leaburn.  He has been doing well holding the ball up lately but it is key for him to get a goal for his confidence if he is going to lead the line

He can’t start every game though as then we won’t get the best out of him. He’ll either start Tuesday or next Saturday, not both, in my opinion.

The last place Kelman should play is Zampa Road , he’s just too nice and is like the lion in the wizard of Oz .
Dykes and Leaburn for that battle please
  • Thought he did exactly what it says on the tin. Nice Assist for Careys winner.
By the way a lot of people getting on Careys back recently but whatever his faults he does score important goals which translate into many points this season.

    You could be right.

Mason Burstow had a quick goal at CAFC which helped him get the move to the Chelsea conveyor belt despite the Irony that he is now playing his football a division down on Charlton with his loan move to Bolton.

Thought his movement was really good, he was stretching their line and making space to run in-behind, but our midfield preferred the sideways/backwards pass and never found him.

It will be good for Leaburn to learn from a seasoned Championship target man.

Even if he's only average at this level, that would still make him one of our better players.

Feel sorry for Kelman but Leaburn and Lyndon together up top will rip this division apart
As I said L & L up top is the future.

Prepare for "one L of a strike force" type headlines.

I think Dykes is a good bit of business for the remainder of this season, but I would start Leaburn all day over him and bring Dykes on about 60 mins as Leaburn gets tired
Leaburn “gets tired” after 60 mins……Jesus Christ, he’s only 22.
The game's very, very different to what it used to be even 10 years ago I'd say that means that the "gets tired" comment, for a striker playing the role Leaburn has, probably isn't a silly comment.

We have three in-game opportunities to use up to five subs (and whatever one wants to do at half time, so four slots, so to speak). That means 16 players could/would play in a match. There wasn't another striker remotely like Miles in our squad until we signed Dykes - big, aerial, bullying presence, who leads a press from the front, holds up play (or tries to) and harasses defenders with lots of physicality.

If we played Miles week in, week out, expecting him to give a full 90 minutes of intense press, he would 1) not sustain the level of press he does for 60; 2) be at further risk of injury; and 3) it probably lessens his potency as the cumulative effects of this once (and sometimes twice) a week catch up over the course of several months.

To best manage conditioning in today's game, it is vital you have subs who can provide players with rest from intensity, and a squad to manage it longer term, and from a footballing perspective, to try and help replicate a team's style. I get for instance why Coventry was on the bench and not brought on - even a one-game rest like that will likely have benefits longer term. (Though I did think given how we were playing it was unacceptably risky not to even bring him on for Anderson, mind.)

Despite previously being lukewarm on him, Dykes will be effective both in tandem with, and in place of, Leaburn, I think. Yesterday helped showcase that, I think.

Agree with Paddy's comments above and football in this era is how are you going to use your 16 players during the average of around 100 minutes in most matches with injuries, subs and the 'time outs' with the keepers going down for mainly tactical reasons !

Players are hardly ever dropped but just part of the rotation system especially with forwards. Now we have Godden, Dykes, Kelman and Leaburn we have 4 players who can either start or come on during a game. I Can't see Matty G start a game any time soon but great for cameos of 20 minutes or so over the next few games. Tanto unfortunately lacks composure but will put in a shift if needed

Being a striker for most teams is difficult but for Charlton it's totally tiring as you spend so much time making the most of poor passing and chasing shadows.

Miles is still trying to prove he's a Championship striker and overall he is showing that and just like his Dad, it won't just be about a modest goal return.
