I hope there's not much in the Gilbert talk. Or that he is being monitored as a backup to the backup option if we don't get our preferred target. Wasn't really involved for Boro until November but then made 9 Championship starts and 12 sub appearances (was an unused sub in most other games), which isn't terrible in a team that was challenging for automatic promotion but, crucially, only 1 goal and 1 assist. I thought he looked neat and tidy as a player but he wasn't impactful and those stats kind of back that up. Unless there's a plan to play him deeper, if we're signing an attacking midfielder/No.10 then, to be an improvement on what we have, they are going to need to match Carey's work rate and goals output but also add more creativity and I don't see Gilbert as being that man.

I'd rather give Fullah more opportunities.

The old adidge of let's loan players to save budget.....

I think you'd be surprised how much that actually costs at the quality we need. Several million loan fee plus wages way out of our remit.....the only loans we could afford are the players clubs are desperate to get off their books for a season, you might get lucky with someone's face who just didn't fit but general clubs want shot for a reason...

Or young prospects. And they can be real stats as in Conor Gallagher or like the Spurs and Man City youths that we got never appeared and dissappear into the ether

The problem is, as Orient discovered, loan signings mean a complete squad rebuild every season...

Prem league u21s will be on at least 30k a week, if their parent clubs want 50% of the wages covered they’d be one of the highest paid players in the club, that’s a lot of budget to blow on an unproven but skilful player who’s had limited first team experience. We picked up more bargains in January from Championship clubs who had in their minds had recruitment failures and money to burn. Coady, and Dykes must’ve been on and around £30k a week but at least had Championship experience. We only picked up Bree because his face didn’t fit, it’s rare to get someone of that quality and experience in the summer.

Isn’t the squad quite large now? Would we have to get rid of a few before bringing them in for registration purposes.

But it can give you a much better team than you could otherwise afford. Without loans, Orient would never have got near promotion that season.

Losing Gallagher stuffed us,  but without his contribution in the first half of the season we would have been relegated several games earlier

Surely we’ve got to shed 4/5 more before we start getting more in?

Loan players are going to be key for us this year.  Unfortunately they are likely to come late in the transfer window due to distractions of the World Cup for many prem clubs and when they have to submit their squad. We did bring in some solid loan last season so hopefully a little better this year and clubs will want to work with us especially as we played loan players in most games

How long after the seasons start does the window close?

Oxford showed last season that a very poor start is extremely difficult to turn around, so if we have played 4-5 games before loanees arrive at the end of the window, then we need to imbed them to the team, then we are going to really struggle.

While I agree Cawley was a lot more optimistic about Watson than most, the quote in question is from a tweet of his when Joe Bryan scored in the play off final for Fulham.

He’s a free agent. I’d assume wages would be stupidly high but not as unrealistic if he’s a free agent.

    Completely utterly unrealistic
