Shame about Sykes. If rumours were to be believed, it sounded like he was a player we were interested in.

If true, I wonder if we got gazumped?

Considering he’s accepted a 2 year deal at Millwall I’m guessing he didn’t have as many options as he would have liked surely at his age he could have at the very minimum held out for 3

If we start the new season with Coventry and Docherty still in the middle, that's going to be depressing.
That is reasonably likely. If we do sign a player from Europe later this month/early August it would be a bit of a risk to chuck them straight in to the eleven for the first game. There’s better value from abroad but it will take signings longer to adapt.

Coventry and Docherty were fine at the start of last season, we were in the top 6 with that midfield. Hopefully we get some upgrades sorted soon but it’s not exactly a disaster if that’s our midfield against Derby
Yeah but there's obviously a world of difference between having made some promising signings in that key area but easing them into the starting line up vs Doc & Cov are starting because we haven't managed to sign any midfielders (or no one better). Think the concerns are more about the latter. Still plenty of time in the window so not personally bothered now, but if we haven't signed a decent CM by Derby then it's pretty clear the window hasn't gone as well us any of us or the club would have been hoping

I didn't say it would be a disaster. I said it would be depressing.

For someone that Bristol weren't bothered about keeping, he's done well to move to a more successful side, even if he'll probably just be a squad player.

That was more my point. At this stage there’s a good chance at least one of them is starting the first game of the season, probably both. But that will be fine if we’ve got at least one new midfielder on the bench ready to come in once they are up to speed

I really hope JRC has a good pre season and replaces one of them.  He can at least pass the ball .  You’d hope Knibbs might improve this season too .

Our club policy is to only give a year long contract for those aged 30 and over. It’s why we lost Saville to Luton last season. We offered him another year and they offered him two on similar money. Sykes is 29 so I’m presuming that’s why we only gave him 2 years.

Oxford club statement basically saying they’re in the mud in terms of financial rules for this summer, would be straight on the phone to Brian De Keersmaecker

Semi related as they have some good players. Oxford have been placed under a transfer embargo as they can’t meet L1 financial rules. Would imagine they need a few sales to balance the books

This is so weird, as I'm pretty sure this week I saw that they had received the thumbs up from the local authority to start building a new stadium.
Been looking to move for a couple of seasons.
Where they are I'd imagine is fantastic for redevelopment.

Be a bit disappointed if we don't pull off the annual non-scoring striker signing this July, someone like an Ahadame or Tomer Hemed. Just feels like the done thing.

That's the spirit. There will be some proper last minute sixth choices to salivate over come deadline day. We must never let our pile of deadwood get too low...

No. And I’m not even sure there’s room for him now we’ve brought in Sykes, Servais and Metcalfe. We have an abundance of midfield options now. I have a feeling he has been badly advised.

Knibbs is another who came with a slight knock, didn't have a full pre season, got injured again. With a full pre season and injury free then I'm expecting a lot, lots more from him this season.
    Top, top player ?

In all seriousness , we all hope so .

They've also alluded that in the circumstances they want to keep their best players.

Will Mbappe missing part of your pre-season make things difficult for him to get into the team,

Just adding this as an adendum to the earlier chat about PL academy kids wages. From what I can work out, Barry signed this contract aged 20

Louie Barry was on around £40,000 a week and has taken a reduction to allow the move to Sheffield Wednesday, signing a 4 year deal. #AVFC didn’t receive the type of fee they would have got a year ago, but they hope he and Swinkels are the starting of raising funds through the…

But if they don't sell, their finances won't get any better, and they'll be, at best, in the exact same situation next season...

They'll have to sell, or get worse.

Stockton was a hill I was willing to die on. The clamour on here for us to sign him, based on watching him bully a backline which included Sean Clare, Chris Gunter and Adam Matthew’s was unreal.

There were literally posters threatening to boycott the season* because he was the sort of player we should be going for.

*Never taking into account that he has never signed for a team ‘ down sarf’
