    So

Ivan in for c £500K (rumoured)
Billy in for c £500K (rumoured)
Grant in for free (obvs a signing on free, who knows maybe £500K?)

A Mitchell out for say £500K
Anderson out, who knows, maybe £3-400K?
Kanu to go, who knows, maybe £750K?

IF that is broadly accurate (and it's mainly guess work but can't see it being miles out) then apart from Collins, we won't have spent a penny so far this window.

Expecting big things in the next 2-3 weeks.

The wages of the 3 coming in will be much much higher than the 3 coming out. When it comes to our playing budget that matters alongside transfer fees

3 in.  One from Scotland, one from Europe and Grant.  Outside Grant I doubt wages are huge.
7 Out.  Berry, Anderson, Gillesphy, Taylor, Dykes, Ahadme (loan), Z Mitchell (loan).  Then Kanu and A Mitchell looking likely.  Plus loanees Clarke and Coady returned to their clubs.  Our wage bill right now will be significantly lower than the one we finished the season with.

Expecting big things in the next 2-3 weeks.
    Like what?

Say a decent Championship midfielder was available, why on earth would they choose Jonesball over going somewhere like Wrexham, Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion etc?

That's the flip side of promotion to the Championship and trying to recruit decent & proven Championship players - other Championship teams will want them too.

If Mbappe became available at £6m, I am sure the Charlton board would think that's money well spent. The way some football fans think is 'well, we should push the boat out and sign him then'. Forgetting that every other single half decent club in world football would also be in for him at that price.

Have the board got the appetite to not only spend the £5-10m on a decent player at this level, but also match the wages the likes of Middlesbrough would offer and commit to a £4-5m contract?? Risking every other first teamer knocking on the door about a wage increase.

Even if yes, would that player come and play for Jones? As he'd be highly sort after.

Essentially, I think a lot of football fans are fantatists. It's the nature of the beast. You kind of have to be to put yourself through it, rather than just support Real Madrid.

Certainly Charlton are not as an attractive proposition as let’s say Middlesbrough or Norwich but we aren’t competing with every other club in The Championship for our targets. Yes there will be competition but not every other Championship club will need players in the positions we do and sometimes location and game time come into the equation. There are probably fourteen or more at least clubs that will be looking at much more costly players than we are. Charlton haven’t had a big sale recently that boosts the coffers and it’s going to take a few more seasons of building the strength of the squad to find that player that we can move on for big bucks. As for Jones’s Charlton not suiting every player. You’re possibly correct to an extent but I’d say that’s a very small and insignificant piece of the puzzle.
First time Middlesbrough has ever been called an 'attractive proposition' someone needs to tell them that it's not the shit hole everyone thinks it is, if thats case. But seriously Shooters, you are right, the Swansea forward who cost six million and scored a total of six goals, three against us, shows you that inflated fees are no guarantee of success. I don't care if they arrive on a free as long as it works and we progress as a team.

If every other club also thought a £6m price tag for a player was a bargain, the selling club would up the price. It's a nonsense example

Can someone just make a rumour up
We're re-signing Matt Smith. We couldn't remember which one we liked more though so out of an abundance of caution we're going in for both

I suspect our season sinks or swims on the strength of the next three signings.
And whether they stay fit 😮

Macca and Zak gone too plus some of Ahadme's wages.

Not sure why some people are assuming there is anything outstanding on the Apter fee. There maybe but even if there is the Karoy fee is still income in this financial year.
The Apter fee will be paid in instalments over the course of his contract. You are right though the Karoy fee will be recorded in full as income this year, even though Blackpool will pay it over 4 years
    How can you know that?

The area has some beautiful scenery and villages. You'd think a pro footballer on £15-35k would be able to buy a lovely pad up there. Far nicer than some overpriced place in the rat run of commuter greater London.
Remember when we flew up for the FA Cup replay. Lovely scenery from the airport to the edge of the city. Then got to the city and wondered if a war had been going on.

I expect the money for Anderson went towards the rest of the money we owe for Apter.

Trying to read into Jones' comments a bit more - this may be a waste of time as we know he runs a tight ship, and managers like to mislead - and it suggests that the position(s) we are going to focus on (i.e. spend 'big', or any, money on) are those that improve our ability in attack: 'We have the nucleus of a really good squad, but what we need to add is a bit more flair, a bit more quality and zest in one-v-one areas and at the top end of the squad.'

So this suggests a wide player, a striker, or maybe a creative no 10. It's clear
that we have a lot of striking options already, but outgoings are incomplete and maybe the others aren't up to scratch. A more creative, maverick style no 10, as opposed to the options we have in Carey and Knibbs. This doesn't align with Jones' history but could be a possibility. It seems most likely that this means a wide player. Two options here: someone in the mould of Thierry Small who is defensively solid and willing, but with the ability to take a man on and be an attacking threat. This feels achievable, someone like Stanley Mills. Or, it indicates the formation we have seen in the first few friendlies may be a permanent fixture and it is an out and out wide man (more likely to be a loan or player from abroad with potential).

The other big position is in the midfield. I don't think it is realistic that we find a player who combines the best bits of Coventry and Docherty. If we try to do this we will have to take a risk on someone from abroad. I feel that Docherty's performances towards the end of the year, Jones' comments after the Millwall game (needing a player who can help control the game) and the subsequent attempt to get Sam Field suggest that the Coventry position is the one we are more likely to focus on.

I don't know if this aligns with Jones' comments, but I would be happy with the majority of the budget we have being spent on these two roles, with a preference for the well rounded right sided player over a winger as I am not in favour of a complete tactical overhaul in one summer with this squad. Then any further additions being frees or loans that we can get in to help pad out the squad.

I’ve seen Lankshear who was on loan at Oxford mentioned as an option. Going to Boro in £10+ mill deal. The market really is whack a doodle!
This is why the midfield hasn't seen much transfer activity yet - I have no doubt Jones knows as well as anyone how much improving is needed, he will be as eager as any of us if not moreso to get it done but when Lankshear is going for a 7 figure fee the market is just completely insane.
Hes good yes, but 10 million pounds good? I just don't see it.
I think this shows our roadmap has to be taking some gambles on young players and hoping a couple really break out. Get into a cycle of selling your best player every couple of seasons for these kind of fees and then using the expanded budget to gamble on youngsters with even higher ceilings. Basically the Coventry model.
With the possible exception of T Campbell, there is no clear sign yet  that we can bring through young players at this stage in the Champ. It looks more likely that we have to rely on Coadys and Grants, experienced Champ players with some life left in them.
Our Academy has been great in League One, but I am not sure it is going to produce Champ level players any time soon.

It's not bringing them through, it's holding onto them.  There are 5-6 in PL academies who grew up at Charlton and left before signing contracts.  We need to find a way to hold onto those players like Millwall did with Esse.
We can hang on to some. But TC, Leaburn, Gough, Asimwe, Anderson and Kanu are all 20/2122 years old. Too old for the youth team and, apart from TC, unlikely to get much first team action. The only way to keep most of them on our books is season long loans. Otherwise sell.
The Academy players who we have lost to the PL will be on wages way higher than we can afford.

Skim read this thread and not scrutinised, whilst it's disappointing TC is going on loan to Peterborough when I thought he showed signs of being a good player at Championship level, im thrilled to see we're after Mbappe for the short price of £6m too! I do worry about his lack of championship experience however, could see him playing second fiddle to Grant while he gets up to speed

100% this, from what we have seen pre season so far the 2 new signings look very good imo and Collins was for the one of the highlights the back end of the season as he just looked a monster with a touch of class, Im really hoping he isnt seriously sidelined

Before we’d signed anyone, I thought we needed to sign 3 players they would score us goals this season, if we wanted to improve a bit.

Well, we’ve signed one, Karlan, but hopefully also Gooden will be available more often this season, which you could say is another goal scorer, we don’t have available much last season.

So they makes it one more goal scorer to sign, don’t stress it will happen.
