If Kamara is still on the cards wouldnt that make us a bit overloaded with wide players ?
Would signal Apter going out, then we’d have 4 wide players

Yes and no you need minimum 2 each side so you have TC and Alli for the left, Kamara and Apter for the right and despite Grant mainly being a LW he could play through the middle as well.

Alternatively there is no guarantee TC or Apter are here past this summer

We have 3 left wingers and one right (Apter). Wouldn't be surprised to see TC go and Kamara come in if TC is still not signing a contract

Grant isn’t an out and out wideman though is he?

Where are we with the squad limits? Probably can assume Kanu, Olaofe and Asiimwe will go as the minimum. Beyond that we may need to move on someone we’d be happy to keep. So perhaps we’d only want another winger after we’ve sorted out CM first, and know we have room.

I'd be surprised if we signed Kamara more because of the fee Hull would probably demand more than anything else. Feels like we're being thrown in there to get more money from Pompey.

I don't think it would be that mad to add another wide man with TC away on international duty a lot and Apter with question marks against him, I just don't ultimately think it will be Kamara.

Is there a possibility that TC is sold and that’s why we want Kamara as well as Alli?
  • Haven't actually heard anything at all re Tanto moving on which is a bit strange, but agree you have to think he will

Played there for quite a while now, probably last 4-5 years he’s mainly played off the left

The women’s team have an exotic signing from Paris FC, while we’re signing a bloke from Millwall who started out in our academy.
    They’re in the top flight.

Kamara, a dynamic CM and Dykes would look like a very solid window on top of what we have. Make it happen Jonesy!

It is becoming increasingly noticeable how players fail to kick on with us. I wouldn't expect them all too, maybe only a few, maybe one or two!
I just don't think that is true. Jones has Maximised a lot of these players. Who in the squad do you think has not kicked on?
Probably all of the ones from last summer , bar Carey (not including Bell as 32 year olds don’t “kick on”.    We’ve been shopping in Lidl for so long , it can’t be a surprise that we’re not churning out players that can be sold for huge profit .
    Err... Lloyd Jones?

Or don't you think he stepped up to playing in the Championship?

Have a suspicion this will go to deadline day and we'll do some late deal for him to go on loan in League 1 with us paying basically all his wages.

If we're playing with two out and out wingers for a significant portion of the season, we currently have: TC, Alli, Grant, Apter and Olaofe who can play in those wide positions.

I'd imagine Jones wants 4 who can cover those roles so we could see Olaofe and Apter out the door with one more to come in to round out the options.

Playing off the left in a front 3 or a 4231 kinda means your a winger thought right?

Yes you might not be getting the byline and crossing in but your positional sense should be the same you just cut in a bit more when you have the ball, we wouldn’t be playing a left winger and left inside forward at the same time would we?

Dobson is not what we need. He was not a creative midfield player.
Dobson would be a class signing for us at this stage. He would ease right back into the team I reckon.

I also genuinely think you could give Nathan Jones Iniesta and David Silva, and he would still somehow have 37% possession at home and create little chances. It just isn't his style. We need all action mids who get stuck in a bit and can play a bit. A creative midfielder would be wasted here, I've come to realise that.
Yeah the creativity is meant to come from the direct wingers. It's why everyone we've signed for those areas is some form of running 1v1 threat. They "just" all need to get better at crossing and shooting
Well, the club have some coaching to do then. TC is the most infuriating player as he is so wasteful once he gets to the opponents penalty area. Crossing or shooting is not his forte  - and it should be !

Grant is more of a striker & given the chances I reckon he could be our top goal scorer this season.

But as you say - the wide players need to be given the ball. Once we have it then no dilly-dallying.....just get it wide & let these players take it forward and either cross or shoot.

Weirdly, I wouldn’t mind seeing what Tanto was like on the wing. Provided it’s before the season starts. He’s got the athleticism to play there, just not sure what’s he’s like with delivering a cross.
He obviously struggles with end product in terms of finishing, maybe moving him else where may work in his favour?
Maybe as a wide forward in a front three, if Kelman is injured trying Grant Leaburn Tanto  could be interesting, with TC and Ali to come on when needed

He's been playing there for a lot of pre season.

There was also a disastrous game where he played there and got completely overrun because he didn't know how to do the defensive work. Coventry away after Bell got injured I think?

I'm pretty sure Cawley said that Kamara could happen later in the window.
We're planning on Nikon'ing him at the last minute... Haha... Pompey's faces will be an absolute picture!!
I've already heard rumours of a big reveal, they're going to fire him out of a Canon at HT vs. Preston
Jones was asked about Kamara, and replied "I Leica him".

Need some big movement out now if we want to clear space for top quality midfielders.
    Kanu
    Tanto
    Assimwe
    Doc
Ramsay (if the fee is right)
get some money in and reinvest on a high quality of player
    Top quality midfielders.
Sorry but that is not going to happen.

    Average players maybe .

The days of decent and top quality players at Charlton disappeared Many years ago.
    Wtf
    Walsh, 96
    Bowyer 96
    Jones k 00
    Kinsella 02
    Shelvey10

    all top quality midfielders.

Get players in like that we as a club would be on the up.

So in your opinion, we've not had a top quality midfielder since Jonjo Shelvey? Okay, that tells me all I need to know.
dale stephens was decent as was cullen - not sure how the list above missed out scott parker and claus jenson - probably our two best midfielders since 96
    Kish and K.Jones.

I think we’ve got 27 for 25 slots (that’s after the Dixon move). Assuming they don’t want to keep a player on the payroll who can’t play in a game, we’re going to have to lose 4 to bring in the mythical creative midfielders.

I agree with a comment someone else made, we’ll try to buy one, and use the loan market for the second.

The wingers in a 4231/433 have to regular cut inside to get inside the box and contribute goals, as otherwise you end up basically playing 451, and over reliant on your No 9 to get the goals, which doesn't work unless you have a Haaland type cheat code striker.

On the left, Grant should at least be an upgrade in finishing to TC, who's shooting is probably the worst part of his game.

If we were to loan a player I'd expect them to come from the PL, below is a list of the top 5 midfielders in PL2 by minutes played

    Preston Fearon - West Ham
    Ollie Pickles - Leeds
    Reiss-Alexander Russell-Denny - Spurs
Tommy Pilling - Liverpool but since moved to a Slovakian team
    Rio Kyerematen - Spurs

In terms of young players who played few minutes last season in midfield in the PL these are some names that probably won't have PL loan interest

    Joe Knight - Brighton
    Callum Olusesi - Spurs
    George Hemmings - Aston Villa
