7 hours into Monday. Where is this new signing then?8

Just flicked through that person’s tweets.TheSE7 said:https://x.com/sammybex61/status/2083883167119757717?s=46More hearsay of course, but someone on X claiming we bid around £5m but lost out as Swansea got him for £6m, for kiwi Marko Stamenic.
I know obviously this holds no real relevance in terms of this season but IF true, it shows we do have money and are willing to spend it. (Missed out on a good one there, btw.)
But interesting to see the second part of this claiming we have an offer in for a midfielder for around £3.5m/£4m. I guess it supports what we’ve all been hearing.
Looks like they’re absolutely clueless, so I wouldn’t believe anything from them.0 -
For those of you knocking the club and its apparent delay in making signings, I think you need to listen to the championship insights pod by NTT20. They talk about how difficult recruitment is in the championship, particularly for lower end teams.16

Yeah yeah, ultimately if you have the money you can get the player.cafc_se7 said:For those of you knocking the club and its apparent delay in making signings, I think you need to listen to the championship insights pod by NTT20. Please stop talking sense Shooters - it's getting boring!ShootersHillGuru said:The two (?) midfield signings will define and hopefully bring everything together. Take one part out of an engine and it performs below par or even not at all. Add that part or in our case midfielder and things can work a whole lot better. We must get some quality players to make that midfield gel the other parts.1 -
I think you are right Golfie, but I do believe that McNamara was brought in for three reasons. One, it gives us cover should Ramsay move on, either in this window or the next, two it does allow us to switch to a back four and three, it was cheap.golfaddick said:
That's not my point.Todds_right_hook said:
Freebie bins isn’t really a fair reflection though is it.golfaddick said:
I think that's why we have suddenly brought Chalobah in. Like Grant & McNamara they weren't on our original "hit list".....but as the weeks have gone on we've had to go hunting in the freebie bins.Crispywood said:
We’ve spent nearly 2 months chasing him, may be a little pathetic but have to ride it out if we think he’s the player to change this team. What we should do though is have somebody locked and loaded if it does go pear shaped.RonnieMoore said:If Holsgrove is holding out for a move to Germany and we may still be in with a shout if that don’t happen closer to the window closing .. do we play the waiting game ..or move on to next name on our list ???Ideally would have been good to go in for 2 midfielders get one sorted now and one we can wait a bit longer to bring inAlli cost £1.5m, grant was a free. I would bet my house on grants wages being significantly higher than alli’s. My guess without any substance is that grant is on £8k a week more
two defenders that cost a fee, three including CS in Jan. McNamara on a free. I bet McNamara is the highest paid out of those three.I would start chabolah over any of our current central midfielders any day.
Just because a player is on a free, it doesn’t mean they aren’t worth signing
My point is, players that are out of contract become "free" once the retained lists are announced (probably earlier as all clubs know what players are out of contract) and therefore negotiations can take place in early May.
I do not believe for a moment that McNamara and Chalobah were on our "wanted" list that we had supposedly drawn up many months ago. Neither seemed to have any other suitors (so much so it appears that McNamara was off to Cambridge to join up with his old Millwall boss). If pushed I can sort of think that maybe Grant was "wanted" by us, but as we are one of the lowest wage payers in the division I cant see how we would be chosen ahead of any other club bar Lincoln, and one or two others.
Hence my hunch being that these 3 recruits were signed after our main targets turned us down. Who they were I have no clue. Those players might have signed elsewhere, or our bids have been rejected by the selling club.
And I agree with you, just because they are free doesn't mean they aren't worth signing. Quite the opposite if a player has purposely run down his contract so that he can leave on a free. And that is my point. Both McNamara or Chalobah were "released" by their clubs.....and although it appears that WBA wanted Grant to re sign a new contract, I dont think they pushed the boat out in terms of wages.2 -

Not the case at all, with the FFP rules in place and with the fact we will be one of the lesser earning sides commercially in the league, we can hardly go burning cash! What do you expect?J BLOCK said:

Its just not called that anymore but it still exists and you need higher income to spend more. There are far too many posters on here who just gave to correct people from spelling and grammatical errors. Must be loads of retired school teachers.gringo said:

Its OK, i read behind ronnie moore's paywall that we have been saving our money for a replacement to Coady and that Declan Rice is signing tomorrow.

So I'm really confused. Are we signing someone today or not?
I've seen two ITK posts claiming different things.
I'm so far from being ITK that I in fact no virtually nothing. Or so my wife tells me2 -

Astrit Ajdarević is currently at baggage reclaim in City Airport; 18 stone, smoking furiously and really hoping he remembered to pack his boots.12

Makes me laugh that people think its so easy to go and l buy what players you want, with the new SCR rules we just can't compete with a lot of teams in this league atm. Look at the likes of Newcastle and Villa they have some of the richest owners in football and they're struggling with restrictions.7
-
Direct from the EFL website
The SCR system limits Clubs spending on Player and Manager-related costs (including transfer fees) to a set percentage of their income, alongside a limited level of owner funding. From the 2026/27 season the SCR allowance for Clubs will be set at 85% of income, with a flexible equity top-up allowance of £33m over a three-year period (up to a maximum of £15m a season)1 -
For the 2026/27 season, EFL Championship Squad Cost Rules (SCR) limit spending on player and manager costs (wages, transfer fee amortisation, and agent fees) to 85% of total club income.Clubs also receive a flexible owner equity top-up allowance of up to £33 million over a three-year period (capped at £15 million in any single season) to boost spending capacity. Real-time monitoring throughout the season replaces the previous retroactive Profitability and Sustainability (P&S) assessments.
That's the new rules in a nutshell so you still have to spend within your means. Get the feeling the likes of Stoke are probably getting that £15m owner injection this season in a push for the playoffs.1 -

I don't know if they go back retrospectively or not but you'd imagine given our losses the owners are already at least £20m into the limit if this is the end of a three year periodAllHailTheHen said:For the 2026/27 season, EFL Championship Squad Cost Rules (SCR) limit spending on player and manager costs (wages, transfer fee amortisation, and agent fees) to 85% of total club income.Clubs also receive a flexible owner equity top-up allowance of up to £33 million over a three-year period (capped at £15 million in any single season) to boost spending capacity. So if our revenue is £11.2M (per our most recent accounts), then we can pay £9.5M in “player and manager costs” + up to £24.5M if the ownership fund the difference. Is that how it works?
If so, then our most recently reported wage bill was already close to £16M (and that doesn’t include transfer fee amortisation). This covers the period ending June 2025 (I.e. up to our promotion back to the championship). Hopefully in the meantime our revenues have gone up, but I would expect player & manager costs will have as well.It shows how tight it is to comply with the rules and spend the type of money required in the Championship.8
