There’s a tier of players that won’t sign for us early summer because they will be hoping for a better move. Holsgrove is an example of this, but that level of player is what we are aiming for in midfield and it’s what we need. Later in the window, if no one better has signed them then we have a chanceSword65pf said:
Surely the longer we wait the quality of the player we get goes down, a time will come when players don’t want to move, or the ones worth having have gone elsewhere. I don’t see us putting in a big enough bid for someone worth having from another champ team, hopefully we have uncovered some ready to go gems from abroad. Not convinced it’s going to happen to be honest.NabySarr said:
We could sign a better player by waiting though, who could be worth an extra 6 points over the season.Braziliance said:
This is the frustrating part. Every day that goes by is one less day without our potential new player getting to gel with the team, and potentially less potential points without match sharpness. People can say it's dramatic but we stayed up by 6 points last season and a good start to the season can set the tone.MrBurns said:Another day without a new central midfielder
We have known our league status since April, 102 days ago. We have known long before that that the glaring issue is in the midfield. It's bloody amateur we haven't got one in by now (it should be two tbh). You're telling me a Championship level club can't find a better midfielder than what we have in that time period, ready to sign when the window opens?
If all our plans have been based around a player who we have allegedly underbid for, I'll be so disappointed.
People will say it's bed wetting, or dramatic etc, but it's not. It is the most important position we need and we should have had 10-20 names ready to approach, and if we don't, I question our scouting capabilities.
Derby County ten days away and as it stands, it's almost certain Conor Coventry or Greg Docherty will be starting for us, maybe even both. Not good enough imo.If we’d signed a right wing back early August instead of waiting for Bree we might have got relegated last season. They are obviously trying to get one in as quickly as possible, it’s such an important signing I’m happy to wait to make sure it’s the best possible signing rather than rush one in now
Plus the PL loans are always end of the window. And most loans in general like Bree last summer, where they couldn’t find him a permanent deal which we wouldn’t been able to afford, but then at the end of the window he was available on loan to us. Demands will often drop at the end of a window as clubs need to offload players, that makes better players affordable to us4 -
You sound concerned we might lose TC, I know your his biggest fan Ronald...🤷♂️RonnieMoore said:

Wouldn’t be surprised if we’ve made offers and been laughed out of town.TheHerminator said:

216 days ago the club genuinely tried to move Greg Docherty to Wycombe but it fell through, I believe cause of an injury? So it's very safe to assume that at a minimum, Nathan Jones has probably wanted a new midfielder or even two, over 200 days ago.NabySarr said:

Sorry, but that isn't good enough for me. I'll still go to the games as I can, support the team, etc, bla bla, but there is no hiding how amateur it is. Like I said, I would pay serious money to listen in on one of the meetings where they discuss players.

genuinely curious. Do you think they’ve been a bit negligent in not getting the right people in when they could have? That’s what your post suggests0 -
Same posters making the same sort of strong sweeping statements about the transfer window, (before it’s shut, and the season has played out), that they have been doing since the January 24 window and beyond.
I just don’t get it.17 -
Of course Jones has wanted a new midfielder. I bet he could have signed plenty this summer though, but he’d rather wait for a midfielder that he really wantsBraziliance said:

Wouldn’t have thought it in our pre season performances either, and don’t give me the it’s only pre season bollox, because for pre season we’ve been shit, disjointed and missing players good enough going forward in midfield, people need to stop sugar coating.NabySarr said:

Don't think the right approach is to have 20 names and move through them if they don't immediately sign. They obviously think there is a genuine prospect of signing the player(s) they are pursuing, and they are better than the ones much further down the list. Seems pretty sensible to me.Braziliance said:

So there is a midfielder somewhere better than we have( not difficult I suppose) that hasn’t been snapped up 10 days before the season starts waiting for us to swoop in?, more likely is that we are running out of options because we’ve tried to lowball every fucker.NabySarr said:

better teams. So they don’t sign for us in June/July, but instead of us signing someone worse we wait for the better player to realise we are his best option
They aren’t waiting for us to swoop in, we are waiting for them to accept we are the best move for them this summer5 -
I’m almost certain we could’ve filled a hole in centre mid with any average player 20 times over by now if that’s what we wanted but we obviously want someone to fill that role of quality and are willing to pursue them. Sure, it would’ve been ideal to have them in and ready to roll by now but that’s not how this summer window is going for a lot of clubs, including us.13

The Bowyer years was our golden era for prem loans - Maatsen, Gallagher, Cullen, Bielik, and Millar all went on to play in the Prem and get lots of caps.11

Our window has been like the Bmob. We’ve gave it are all but just lacked numbers.2

I think Gallen had very good contacts and watched a lot of PL U21 football. Shame he’s at Millwall now and doing a good job thereLittleAddick said:The Bowyer years was our golden era for prem loans - Maatsen, Gallagher, Cullen, Bielik, and Millar all went on to play in the Prem and get lots of caps.8 -
This summer window in a nutshell:
We needed a new central midfielder, arguably two, who were genuine upgrades on what we already had.
Most of the window passes without signing one, and we're told not to worry because "there's still plenty of time left."
Docherty and Coventry start the opening games and get overrun again.
We're told, once again, not to worry because there's still time left in the window.
Eventually, we sign a midfielder who's good enough to provide competition for Docherty and Coventry, but isn't actually an upgrade.
Then anyone still questioning the midfield is told they'll never be happy because "you got the midfielder you wanted."
The season rolls on... and central midfield is still our weakest position.

Few dodgy ones in there too!LittleAddick said:The Bowyer years was our golden era for prem loans - Maatsen, Gallagher, Cullen, Bielik, and Millar all went on to play in the Prem and get lots of caps.0 -
It’s obviously the case from listening to any interview Jones has done talking about it. Feels like some people just want to stick the boot in and ignore it thoughBetterCallSaul said:I’m almost certain we could’ve filled a hole in centre mid with any average player 20 times over by now if that’s what we wanted but we obviously want someone to fill that role of quality and are willing to pursue them. Apart from the fact that this hasn't actually happened and it's a hypothetical situationSELR_addicks said:This summer window in a nutshell:
