If that really is our first choice 11 God help us. Thankfully it won't be when the two new midfielders come in next week. Also Bell looks past it, Mesic instead
If we do get two new midfielders next week which I doubt, they will be 4 to 8 weeks away from being match fit.
Not if they've been doing pre season with their club

Grant looks a level of quality above the rest of the team.

Knibbs, TC and Billy have had positive moments.

Less said about the rest of the team the better. Ramsay and Bell look like they're still trying to play in a back 3 and not at FB. Ramsay "looks" better with those great last ditch tackles but he's played himself into trouble to get into those situations.

Coventry and Doc just look so pedestrian. Offering very little in the middle, and even calling it very little is a compliment they don't deserve.

Some mixed performances there. Godden looks a yard off the pace but Coventry, what’s the point he contributes little going forward. As golfie said above little change from last season at the moment.

Not awful, but a long way from being good.

Very little threat and again we aren’t getting enough players in the box when we do go forward.

Bell has looked suspect in every game I have seen him in this pre-season and how many unforced errors have lead to Reading corners?

Said it earlier in the thread but we are again seeing a team who look fitter than us. Real concern with only a week to go till the first competitive fixture.

Knibbs looking busy, but a stupid challenge which lead to the goal. Grant doing ok as well. No one else is particularly standing out.

Same old from the two deep central midfielders and it simply isn’t enough.

Am awaiting the Kaminski pile on, but he had zero chance with that free kick.

Coventry is so, so poor. Really don't want to see him starting games this season. Doesn't have the quality to pick a forward pass, so only plays backwards. He's an absolute dream to press as the opposition team.
Seen nothing to suggest he's better than L1 level, and on this basis not even that.

No I don’t think it is mate maybe our first choice up front but no way the midfield or defence
Currently it more or less is?

Mesic starts over bell but apart from that?
I think Collins starts once fit
  • Ridiculous foul by Knibbs for the FK. Kaminski seemed glued to the spot when the FK was taken.

    Ramsay looks very poor.

No chance, he's competing with Jones

He was effective at snuffing out counter attacks when we were in League One, and our direct style suited him as everything went over his head.

But I'd guess even Reading wouldn't want him.

Thought it last year Bell is a worse option than Macca. Can't pass (very poor), can't stay with his man, no goal threat (ever) and only looks comfortable on the ball.

Ramsay and Bell have been awful.  TC doesn’t even look when he crosses does he? Whizzing a number of crosses in when we weren’t advanced into the box and doesn’t even try to cut inside from the right.    Coventry and Doc don’t work well together.  Too similar.  Too deep leaving space in front of them.  That being said Coventry has been good on the ball.  Knibbs will start in front of Carey this year given this formation.  With Jobes and Koumetio we are going to win a lot of headers this year
Coventry's passing is too slow, and not incisive at all. Reading have shown him how it should be done. He works and has a lot of possession but what can he do with it?

Much better work out against a team playing a different system that to be fair as troubled us .. one or two below par Ramsey and Bell especially .. Grant and Knibbs link up play been very encouraging but again Campbell not really joining the party .. Coventry done lot better and looks fitter today and Doc playing like Doc does getting in breaking play up .. still looks at times that the players slip back into 5 at the back mode forget we playing a new system .. especially Ramsey and Campbell …. But superb free kick again come from sloppy back pass and a tackle that did not need to be made ..

Is Koumetio wearing TCs shorts 😀. Looks a good player. Grant, Knibbs and Jones playing well. Not enough quick passes and then not successful enough. Seems more attacking than last season

I don't think we can play Doc and Coventry together. They add effort but neither has the passing range. Safe slow passes won't achieve anything. Should be squad players this season.

We don't know what his instructions are. He might be being instructed to pass slowly and not incisively.

    (That's a joke).

Could have been on his toes with a 9ft wingspan, unless he's prime Buffon or Casillas, he ain't getting to that

Do find it a bit strange that we've switched to four at the back, naturally putting more emphasis on our midfield, without actually adding any quality to our midfield.

You'd think if that was the plan we'd have got ourselves into a position where we're not two midfielders, at least, short of the mark with only one week to go.

Reading deserve their lead at HT.  Hoping for a much improved performance in the second half, maybe even sprinkle in a shot or 2 for good measure.

First real look at the 4231, not as bad as I was expecting it to look but we're definitely a way a way from starting that, convincingly, week in week out at champ level.

Grant showing that "average" champ players are still, for the most part, a cut above most of our squad, a midfielder or two of similar Grantability and I'll feel happier seeing us attempt 4231 away to Millwall, but only then.
