Happy with a point, but it was a tough watch. Bindon looks dodgy.
    Agreed on Bindon!
Yet to see this defensive powerhouse we were promised

Leave off him, will yer? He’s younger than both TC and Miles, didnt have a proper pre-season after being involved in the World Cup, and that was his 3rd game in 7 days.
    Spot on.
No dispensation allowed for Mbick's disrupted pre season though Large?

Can we not agree that if someone says we have nine first team players missing they mean squad players? It's obvious to me. It's a squad game.

Sonny Carey. with him on the pitch, we are playing with 10 men. We were better when he wasn’t there. But that was on the edge of the seat stuff for all the wrong reasons. It’s our midfield that is not settled..

No mention of Jones being totally out witted by Stephans tactical nous which created the overload in midfield and let them control the game.
The constant whining and whinging on here about referees is really tiresome. I haven't seen too many goals scored by the ref against us. Most fans don't even understand the laws of the game.
Recruitment has once again proved to be inadequate.
I don't think many of the summer signings will go on to have any significant career with us.
The supporters who decided to stay away tonight were the only winners. Staggeringly small crowd to watch a game that could have seen us go top.
Pricing of tickets does not help.
Finally  my QPR mate tells me that they had loads of injuries tonight. Every club does. It us a squad game now days and our squad is simply not strong or good enough.
And how many more points than us did QPR get tonight despite Nathan Jones being totally outwitted?
  • Thought the crowd were excellent for a spell during the second half when we were really under the pump.

Yea we should’ve gone for it and lost 0-3
    But that's football.

The whole point of football is that try to score a goal. If the other team is better than you, then so be it.

But QPR weren't better than us. They had players out injured & were there to be beaten. Sadly we didn't even try.
Are you conveniently leaving out the fact that we have players out injured too or what?
So we're equal with them on this injury count.
How comes we let them come at us like their at home then?
I'm with golfie on this - we didn't try to play on the front foot at all. We relied solely on the tactic of catching them on the break.
It's supposed to be entertainment. Watching Charlton now feels like an obligation.
I'm not ever going to support anyone else so if you don't like me moaning about it, tough shit. It was shit, just admit it. You were all bored out of your minds but refuse to admit it.
Almost like they have a stronger side from being in the division for about a decade compared to 1 season
So you expect nothing better unless we're playing Lincoln, Cardiff or Bolton?

Is that how this supposed logic works?

I’m happy to take that point and the clean sheet. For all their superior play and domination Arthur had two saves to make.

In Glenn Kamara they had the best player on the pitch by far. Add Lamptey, Cerkin, Charles and they have players that are simply above the calibre of ours. We can’t ignore the fact that our squad in terms of individual ability and experience is simply not close to QPRs.

With the injuries at the moment Jones is not going to play expansive football. That would be madness and we’d get ripped apart.

And we’d moan about that and plead for ‘going back to the basics.’ Which we did today very much in the Curbishley mould of just resetting after a heavy defeat.

Portsmouth is the more winnable game of the two. I’d expect to see a more front footed style of play whilst maintaining our pragmatic approach.

Yep we’re top six but not kid ourselves that we are going to see top six style football. We need to trust Jones as he has certainly earned it but frustration at the type of performance we saw is fair if mixed with the acceptance that staying in the Championship is the ultimate aim for the season.

I wish I could like this 1000 times.

Getting worried about that No10 role. Carey looks like he doesn't fit the formation at all and Jones clearly doesn't trust Knibbs for whatever reason, JRC is a square peg in a round hole there.

Not really sure what else we can try there unless you play a flat 3 in midfield and bring in Mwambas energy.
The number 10 was a gap at the beginning of the window and a gap ay the end. I imagine with our budget we coukd not afford somebody better than the ones you mentioned, who are really not good enough.
We also did not get a classy right winger so; once again TC is our only attacking outlet. No wonder he looked knackered by the end.
Yeah it's a worry if we're back to TC is the only outlet. The No10 I wonder if it was something pre Sichenje injury we were looking to do but as NJ said post Spurs we had to pivot.

Hopefully it gets looked at again in January.

I'm sort of surprised by all the negativity. It wasn't a particularly fascinating watch but then it's not meant to be. We set up to defend well against a possession team who have started the season superbly and then catch them on the break with a sucker punch. Which we did, but it was disallowed. We also had a lot going for us when Leaburn had their defenders completely in his control but he had to go off injured. We then created another chance in behind but Grant was fouled with nothing given from the terrible ref. The reality is for all their possession QPR had one really good chance and that was created for them by Tyler Bindon. Okonkwo had nothing to do other than that and we mostly watched the ball sail harmlessly out of play. It doesn't really feel like last season where we were hanging on at times and desperately waiting for the whistle despite having about 50 defenders on the pitch, we feel much more controlled in our defending.
The real frustration is that we set up with two central midfielders who can pick a pass and mostly missed them out to send it long, even when Leaburn was off. The few times we let our midfielders get a foot on the ball we created our best chances through the middle and best used the pace in behind. I really hope we can figure out a way to start involving Skipp and Coventry more in games because it will make such a big difference.
Regardless though we're 5th after 6 games, 2 points off the top and if you take away the Stoke aberration we've got 5 points off the teams currently in 1st, 2nd and 4th. That's a pretty good start.
5th after 6 games. The 3 teams directly below us have only played 5. Middlesborough play Millwall next week so at least one of them will go above us.

A frustrating night against a decent side, but we didn’t lose. We have a lot of injuries to key players and had to put out a makeshift defence, but we didn’t lose. The one big refereeing decision went against us tonight, but we didn’t lose. It might not excite everyone but for a year or two (at least) we have to accept our place in the food chain and know that sometimes playing for a point (and getting it!) is acceptable

We are six games in. We are unbeaten at home. We are fifth in the league. Record: W 3 D 2 L 1. I’d have taken that if you offered me it after we lost 0-3 to Reading. It’s ok to be annoyed and frustrated, but surely we’ve learnt by now not to throw the baby out with the bath water?

Knibbs definitely one of those players who gets better and better when he’s not playing.

Got to tip my hat to the optimism of those who’re convinced he’s the solution even when he’s pretty much done nothing since signing.
Scored at Fratton Park last season.

Did you not watch that game for 90 mins?

I've got a colonoscopy next week - it's gonna be more enjoyable looking at the inside of my arse on a TV screen than what we watched then.
I watched a patched together team get a poing with 9 first team players out through injury.

It was not pretty but I’m not going to chuck myself off a bridge having got 11 points already this year.
Who’s the 9 players who come back into that first team?
    Into the squad?

    Billy
    kellman
    Godden
    chalobah
    danny
    bfk
    mannion
    edwards

All get back in the first team match day squad

    I’m struggling for the 9th
So we weren’t missing 9 first team players then.
    Eh?
Basically from your list we're missing: Ramsay or McNamara, Chalobah, Koumetio as First Team Players
As all of those nine (Mannion etc.) likely / possibly wouldn't necessarily have started tonight given the options that did start
All 9 make the first team match day squad no?
My guy - it’s all there in writing. You said we were missing 9 first team players.

Who are the 9 that go into our first team.

Our first team is the starting 11 players.
We’ll have to agree to disagree then.

First team for me means the first team squad. Match day selections.

    Your first 11 changes regularly.

I'll be the first to congratulate Josh Laqeretabua on his first first-team appearance today.
What would you say he was today then? Reserves?
    On the bench. Unused substitute.
The 'first-team' is the first-team we put out onto the pitch.
No, that's the first XI IMO

The first team squad is the 20 who get selected for the game.

Anyway Josh has already been in the first team squad, and made his debut in a league match last season.

When people say "he's training with the first team" they don't mean the specific 11 from the last/next starting XI lineup, they mean the general first team squad
This is bonkers. A team in football is made up of 11 players.
  • I thought that we held our own in the first half until Leaburn came off , but the worse decision was bringing JRC on . as its like playing with 10 men, no effort (or just cant run ) and touched the ball about 6 times in the half. Should have brought on Mbick straight away and kept our formation or bring on Knibbs . but not JRC.

ghe first team changes each game pretty much. How do you determine who the first team is of there are 5 changes say one game to the next?

That was absolute shite. We crossed the line from being a dogged competitive side to just being straight up negative.

Yes another point on the board but my god, did we know we were playing QPR and not prime Barcelona….at home.

Ref was shit but our ambition pissed me off more than anything else tonight and everyone around me in the north lower seemed to be saying the same.

Hopefully we have a bit more intent on Saturday.

Then pray tell what are the subs if they aren't part of the team?

In modern football, it's a team game whereby coaches and managers use 15 or 16 players across the 90 minutes to win a football match.

  • Wow, 232 comments by the time I’ve got home. Posting without reading but assume the usual moan dogs have been barking away.

Very happy with a point from that.

We started with 9 players unavailable and then our only striker gets injured. We were playing a team that moved the ball well and had lots of players very comfortable with ball at feet.

We had players playing out of position, players playing who aren’t yet ready, changed formation about 6 times to try and combat them.

At the end of the day we battled throughout against a team currently better than us. One point gained for us, two points dropped for them.

We need this international break badly

Normally agree with pretty much everything you say on here boss but of those nine players how many would have started and added the quality and creativity we were sorely lacking tonight.

Forget the defence as we kept a clean sheet to earn the point.

I’d say Chabolah but is there anybody else who would have made a difference?

Godden and Kelman are ‘Fox in the Box’ types so don’t see them doing much in a side that only has 25% possession at home

I said in a previous thread that the three week international break is ludicrous (and it is really) but we really need it as we have to get some of these injured players back.
We usually lose our first game back after an International break.

So you might say it's a godsend that there is only one this autumn. 😃

He says the linesman was arrogant and looked at him "like I've just volleyed his cat" for complaining about the disallowed goal
