  • I remember this case largely for my economics teacher at the time bringing up that McCann had all of the attention and this girl hadn't, right after someone in the class made the throwaway comment of "such a scummy looking family I bet it was them...."

Out of the mouth of babes and all that... Haha!

    Would ya?
    With a hammer, then she'd be f#####
  • Did any Sherlock fans recognise the neighbour who didn't trust Matthews?

The young pathologist who has the hots for Sherlock?

No, but will check it out again.
  • Dewsbury seemed portrayed as a very rough area.
Standard dress for the Mums old jeans, cheap top,
fag hanging out and probably covered in tattoo's!
Area full of Labour or Socialist Worker voters.
Was a total embarrassment. At least the actress looked
liked Karen Matthews unlike the 2 in Bobby and Tina.

Sherlock's sister in the final series

Just read through and no one mentioned the words that you state Athletico Madrid.

Badly phrased by me in my rush to work! My point really was that at the start of this thread there seemed to be a lot of people happy to stick the boot into the McCaans referenced around the fact they were middle class Doctors. Meanwhile bemoaning the fact this family did not get the same level of press assistance.

I feel sorry for the McCaans. Don't think they had anything to do with the abduction whatsoever save for their terrible judgement call which they will have to live with forever. I have 2 small children and would never leave them on their own intentionally but can't say I have never made errors of judgement along the way. Not their fault the press caught hold of the storey or they had the "pulling power" to raise all that money. The scumbag who took Maddy is the one to blame and trying to claim their error was comparable to that is unfair in my opinion. I feel - and this is not aimed at people in here but more widely - that the McCaans suffer from an element of jealousy at being relatively wealthy and hence people seem to think losing a child is some sort of comeuppance for them.
  • I like this thread because it's a window into CL before I became a member. A young Henry Irving was much more diplomatic in his responses in my opinion. The years of living in Nick Gray's shadow have left him much more confrontational I feel
  • I'm sure I read sonewhere that they were going to give her a new identity but she was too thick to remember one.

    Reminds me of this:

That is indeed correct according to Wikipedia, it was felt she "lacked the required mental capability" to deal with a new identity.
  • I caught up with this tonight, and I thought it was really well done.

There were a few interesting comments on Twitter, including from the anonymous police officer Inspector Gadget, stating just how realistic the documentary was in the way it portrayed those involved.

Reading further in to the situation, I'm a bit stunned that the mother only got 8 years, and that The Serious Case Review stated that there were no prior signs that the professionals could've been alerted too.

According to the Forensic Toxocologist involved with the case, the poor girl had been drugged regularly for approximately 20 months prior; for a mother that had had run-ins with Social Services before, I'd argue that that should've been apparent surely?

If that was the case, then surely the report from the Toxocologist would warrant a longer sentence than 8 years in itself?! When Perverting the Course of Justice, False Imprisonment and Kidnapping are thrown in, surely to goodness a larger sentence is warranted? I get that sentences usually run concurrently, but fuck.

  • Did she get same sentence at her boyfriends uncle?

She doesn't seem the brightest and easily coerced.
  • Did any Sherlock fans recognise the neighbour who didn't trust Matthews?

Yes but I wasn't sure if it was John's therapist, the girl on the bus, or Toby Jones's daughter.

Or they disagree with you about them having nothing to do with the abduction.
