  • I urge everyone to get a copy of 'The Wrestling' by Simon Garforth.

If I've posted this already I apologise but it's such a great book, just ooozes 1970's England.

    EBay is your friend....
  • Got a pallet of them you need to shift mate? :-D
  • I've just started Warhorse which I got for £4 from one of those companies who leave samples at your office. I loved the film, so we shall see.

    Haha, damn missed a trick!
  • Just reading 'Beyond the Relaxation Response' by Herbert Benson, MD. Short paperback and an easy read. All about mind over matter and the maintenance of good health. Interesting.
  • Franklin: Tragic Hero of Polar Exploration

The whole Franklin expedition story is fascinating and of course closely tied into Greenwich/ Woolwich.....

  • With you on that, Wolfboy.

Half way through " The Leopard" and wishing there were more books out there to look forward to.
Hi Fanny, FYI the new Harry Hole novel is released in English on 15th March. Title is "Phantom".
  • My Dear I wanted to Tell You by Louisa Young

If you liked Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks this is on a similar subject (personal tragedies of the first world war)

or the daddy of WW1 influenced books .. The Magus .. John Fowles
  • I've noticed people have already mentioned the Robert Enke book but I can't recommend it enough. Gets into the psychology of not just goalkeepers but all players when they start feeling the pressure. One players wife said to him 'your're only normal when you're injured'. Can completely change your outlook on footballers as a whole this book

WOW ! Thanks for that, mate. Might buy that as a hardback for poolside reading in Tenareef.

Saw that a new Wallander ( Henning Mankell) called " The Troubled Man" is due out soon too.
  • the five people u meet in heaven by mitch albom......... deep (but good)
  • Almost finished Blood's A Rover by James Ellroy. One of his more accessible novels, especially when compared to the strange staccato style of the previous book in the 'American Tabloid' trilogy, The Cold Six Thousand.
  • Religion for Atheists by Alan de Botton

Interesting and stimulating for both the religious and...er... atheists...

Sounds like the usual nonsense from the other side of the atlantic to me, Rob

    :)

  • The Dead Republic - Roddy Doyle

Excellent end to the Henry Smart trilogy
  • Just started book 3 part 1 in the game of thrones series, love it to bits.
  • Book 3 is the best of The series. Afraid it goes downhill after that though imo at least
  • I've heard that alright, will stick with it anyway to see where it heads.

Mr. Open Minded talking. Actually, it's an ancient Chinese/Tibetan philosophy and how it possibly can be incorporated into the Western world. Don't knock it until you try it, else, keep stum. W@nker :-)

Loved Star called Henry - look forward to reading this.
  • Dominic Sandbrook - the way we were: Britain 1970-74
I've read "Never had it so good" & White Heat"
If you like that kind of thing, you would enjoy David Kynaston's series "Tales of A New Jerusalem" . First one is Austerity Britain 1945-51 and the next Family Britain 1951-1959 (I think). He's going to run it up to 1979.

Really good mix of politics, popular culture, archirtecture etc etc with very well-selected quotes from letters and diaries of ordinary people.

I've read Never had it so good and White Heat also. I think Sandbrook is taking it to 79 and possibly further. Sandbrook was useful to read at Uni when I did an essay on the Sixties as a conservative decade and another one on comparisons between race relations in the uk and us during the 60s.
I've got through the boring chapter on Environmentalism, after that came Ulster and Immigration, far more interesting. On to the Unions now. Poor old Heath he didn't have much luck.
Sandbrook is taking it up to 79 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seasons-Sun-Battle-Britain-1974-1979/dp/1846140323/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1329315143&sr=8-1 1974-79 The Battle for Britain. Very dramatic.
  • Just finished We Need To Talk About Kevin. Didn't think I was going to get into it at first with the way the story was told in the form of letters to the womans husband. A very modern dark tale told in a unique way and well worth reading. Can't wait for it to come out on DVD as missed it at the cinema.

  • The Dead Republic - Roddy Doyle

Excellent end to the Henry Smart trilogy
Missed the 2nd book. What was it called.

Finally got round to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Took me a while to get into it but really enjoying it now. Makes me want to go back to Sweden.

It's the best one of the trilogy IMHO, Henry.

Think you'd like the Jo Nesbo books - try to read them in the correct order.

  • Porno - Irvine Welsh. Read it years ago. Loving it second time round. When I saw Skag Boys (Trainspotting prequel) was due, thought I'd re-read some Welsh.

Got Filth, Porno, Ecstacy and Maribou Stork Nightmares from ebay for just over a fiver.
  • Reading an anthology of Ian Rankine's first three Rebus books now. Just started, but already getting into it.
  • Reading 'The Burning Shore' by Wilbur Smith. Some of his older books are a bit dated but they're always full of blood and guts action and a good read. Usually historical fiction based on Africa.
  • shades of grey - jasper fforde
  • Terrace Legends
