What the hell is happening to the braves again. Their end of season form is like Charlton's in the prem.

It's deja vu, all over again.
Meanwhile, Red Sox having a big clear out: Gonzalez, Beckett and Crawford likely to join the Dodgers.
  • Still hopeful the Dodgers can make the Play-Offs although Giants looking strong in the NL West at present. Having 2 Wild Cards improves our chyances however.

Cards took the series in Cincy tonight but difficult to see the Reds throwing away a 6 game lead in the Central (though they do visit St Louis for the last 3 games of the season).
On to Pittsburgh for the Redbirds for a crucial series (Lohse v AJ Burnett due to start Monday).

Its true, saying that they have had a tough 10 days of series. If the slump continues into the first week of Sept they can kiss the wild spot goodbye.

Bige trade that - not sure if Crawford will be back this season though as he appears to be on the 60 day DL

So Boston will have all this money burning a hole in their pockets ... Who are the notable free agents who they'll be going for then ?

Great night for the Cards. Edging out the Bucs in the first of 3-game series and both Braves & Dodgers going down. Now 2.5 games clear of nearest rival for the second NL Wild Card slot.

Nasty collision at home plate that forced Molina out of the game last night. Much more of a concern to the Cards than the 9-0 loss if he's sidelined for long. La Russa reckoned him to be more indispensable to the club than Pujols....rightly so IMHO.
Rubber game in the series live tonight on ESPN America at midnight.
  • Nice to see the Giants pulling away from the Dodgers in the NL West...
  • Blimey, 4 straight defeats for the Cards (1 run scored in the process), 2 straight for the Braves & Dodgers and 1 for the Bucs.
D-Backs still not out of NL Wild Card contention and they're below 0.500! It's a mad house.
  • If only we weren't so shit against the Padres....

  • Baltimore now level with the Yankees in the AL East and Detroit one game behind the White Sox in the AL Central.

Texas look well set for another post-season from the AL Central after two consecutive world series defeats.

In the the National league Cincinnati are walking the NL Central, Washington the East and San Francisco the West

Wild cards all still very close
  • My god, a season to forget as a Red Sox fan. Mind you, there should be some nice chunky gaps in the wage bill to make for an interesting winter. So happy to see the Orioles keep it up for the year. Thats why I love baseball. It is so much less predictable than the premier league and anyone on their day can have a moment in the spotlight.

Indeed, although annoyed when I see them in a few weeks it will be a nothing game, well it will for the sox not for the Rays

So, in race for the 2nd NL Wild Card slot, despite losing 3 on trot, Cards are still a game clear of Dodgers (also lost 3 on the spin), 2.5 clear of Bucs (lost 6 straight) and only 3 ahead of Brewers and Phils (who are both only 1 game over 0.500), 4 of the D-Backs. Dodgers next up for the Cards in LA so good chance for others to close.
It may still be highly unlikely but this second Wild Card slot makes it not beyond the realms of possibility that there could be a post-season participant (and, given the historically good record of Wild Card winners in the post-season, therefore potentially World Series Champions) that finished the season below 0.500. Holy Cow!
  • True Peanuts but the 2 wild cards and the single play-off game give the advantage back to the divisional winners.

They can arrange their rotation while the WCs will have to use their best available pitcher just to get through.
  • Was in san fran last week and went to see LA Dodgers vs SF Giants, first match id been too and although a bit slow found it pretty enjoyable
  • Did you try the garlic fries, shine? Go Giants!

I did indeed, with the chicken :) picked up a tee too so now a lifelong fan... didnt consume too many $9 pints though !

  • Here in Baltimore we're watching with "baited breath". We haven't had a winning season since 1997, good thing there's no relegation...
This team's a lot like last years' Charlton, a group of "no-names" playing great and for each other, it's fun to watch for a change.
  • watched moneyball the other nite loved it, got me back into baseball and all bout my team the oakland athletics.

  • Unfortunately for us we haven't been able to string a bunch of results together, losing abysmally to the Pads and the Astros killed us, and being 5 back playing the Giants isn't going to help us.
  • Cincinnati Reds were the first team to clinch their division (NL Central) this weekend.

Cards making hard work of beating the Cubs but holding on to NL wild card.
  • If the Astros are less than 0.33 in the NL Central this season, how do they expect to "compete" in the AL West where the 4-team div is at present collectively 0.54?
    We'll sure miss them.
  • Cincinnati Reds were the first team to clinch their division (NL Central) this weekend.

San Francisco Giants, the Charlton Athletic of baseball... ( also won their division, completely ignored in this statement, let's talk about the Dodgers...)

    Go Giants!!!!
  • Yes. Go Giants!!
  • Saw the Giants v Diamondbacks in San Fran last year and been following their progress ever since. looks like they are hitting a good bit of form in time for the post season.
  • Lets hope so Tommy!
  • well we're 7-3 in our last 10, so at least we have picked up the pace, but unfortunately everyone else has done the same thing. 4.5 off a WC, and I predict we will finish 3.5 back
  • Cards beat Astros (yet again). Please Huston, stay in the NL Central. Please, please, please.
  • So Peanuts......looks like it could be a Braves v Cards Wild Card play off! How you thinking this will go?
