So chaps, sorry to put a possible dampener on things here, what would happen if Hull were to accept a straight swap deal, Turner in exchange for one or two players, or in exchange for one player and a nominal amount of cash? How is the sell on calculated when a straight swap is involved?

From memory, Peterborough were furious when we "swapped" Matthew Etherington and cash for Freddy Kanoute. They were due a sell on but didnt get any because of the way the deal was done (typical Tottenham no doubt ;-)

I think West Ham did something similar with Zamora???

I guess Brentford and Charlton would take it to a tribunal and be told to wait outside while the big clubs and FA decided how much to give them.

You still get an agrred 'price' or value of the players, which is agrred between the seller and buyer, we'd get a percentage of this.

However as stated in the article Hull are belieeved to what to renegotiate these terms if they were to sell, and fair enough if he went for 9million theyd only gte 6 million minus whatever he'd get as a golden handshake for leaving his contract early. So unless its for silly silly amounts or they renegotiate and say give us and barent 500k or there abouts they would be stupid to sell

Liverpool mentioned in the papers as being interested in him for about £6m

equally doesn't reflect well on those who sold him

£5.5m in the Mail for Turner. Price dropping rapidly. There goes our windfall : - (

    Long before he appeared.

Curbs let Turner go and Mills didn't come until after Curbs left.

In any case Curbs record on signings is, IMHO, well in credit. That Turner is about the only youth player in 10 or more years you can say "got away" shows that.

And before someone say Primus he was so long ago he played for us before we went back to the Valley.

Well done to Michael Turner...but when he left the Valley we were an established Prem team and he was several places back in the queue for a regular starting slot. He needed to drop a division or two to get regular first team football and has since taken his chance well. But bear in mind that he only has one year's experience of the EPL under his belt and that arrived a long time after he left the club.

We 100% definately have a sell on clause not sure if it's 10% or 15% though, still probably means a tidy windfall either way, although as we know all things Charlton seldom run as expected, he'll probably fail a medical & will never be sold.

Danny Shittu is another young player we let go, who played Prem.
And the keeper at Blackburn Rovers.

Bunch of players who played Championship, including Kemi Izett for Colchester, and Jamal Campbell Ryce (who also played a handful of Prem games for us) etc

Shittu? OK but how many games has he played in the Prem. Was relegated with Watford and hardly played for Bolton.

Jason Brown. Again how many games has he played.

Izett and JCR are playing at a lower level than where we are when we released them.

I wonder how many Charlton youth players since Parker/Konchesky/Fortune have played in the Premier League?

    Sam (briefly)

Campbell-Ryce played in the League Cup but not sure if he ever played in the Prem.

Campbell-Ryce played in the League Cup but not sure if he ever played in the Prem.

He did, home to Arsenal deffo (the Di Canio cocky penalty match) - plus playing sub at places like Bolton, Blackburn for example. Probably less than 10 appearances though, a couple of starts, mainly sub.

None of Shittu, Turner, JCR, Izzet or Brown (the keeper at Blackburn) would have broken through at the time. Simple has that. They've all since developed because they got regular football and worked their way up the leagues.

If we played them regularly in the Prem they might have lost confidence after making mistakes and we could have got relegated. Curbs didn't make a mistake with them, if they were better than the players in their positions they would have played. Sometimes you get a young player that can handle first team football at a young age, most of them though need regular football at the right level first.

JCR is nevertheless playing at a higher level than where we are now.

So Brown has only made a handful of appearances at Blackburn?
It's still Prem experience, and he's a keeper, a specialist position where he'll only get the occasional chance to rack up sub appearances unlike outfield players.

Anyway, which keeper is keeping Brown out of the side - oh, it's only England keeper Paul Robinson.

Shittu might have been relegated with Watford, but if Newcastle hadn't so limply self-destructed, Turner would have been relegated too - in a Hull side that only won 1 League game since Christmas.

Shittu has probably played at least as many Prem games as Turner, if not more.
    So why dismiss him ?

If we held onto every player who showed the slightest bit of promise by giving them a pro contract, we'd be a lot worse off financially than we currently are. Managers make calls at the time, and in our case 99% of the players we released have not gone on to greater things. It's just something that happens sometimes.

Anyway, has Turner gone yet??? Would be nice to get a few quid in!

You can't judge JCR as a miss as we released him as a Prem club. That we've now been relegated doesn't alter that.

Good point about Turner nearly being relegated as well.

No dismissing them but the hardly major prem players.

Maybe the young players would have progressed quicker if they had been allowed out on loan at a younger age.

It'd be like saying we shouldn't have released Barry Fuller, as he's now good enough for League One...

Michael Turner just telling the Hull fans what they want to hear.

We also released Muzzy Izzet, who went on to play for Chelsea in the Prem.

AS I recall he was considered a bit too light for the EPL.
  • Options
    Are you sure, BFR ...???

I know he was at Chelsea as a schoolboy but don't believe he made any Prem appearances for Chelsea.

His little brother is Kemi Izzet who came through the youth set up at Charlton, signed Pro Forms but eventually released without making a League appearance for us.

Parky signed Kemi for Colchester, where he was a stalwart of his promotion winning side, and a regular in 2 CCC seasons.
I believe he's still at Colchester.

Muzzy Izzet retired prematurely with a crocked knee 2 years ago.

He was at Charlton when young, but released then signed for Chelsea as a schoolboy before they sold him to Leicester - where he played in the prem. On edit - I should have said that apparently he was considered too light-weight for us at the time, not for the EPL.

Grr doing three things at once here...BBL...

Oh, right. I thought you said Muzzy Izzet "......went on to play for Chelsea in the Prem."
