  • Interesting piece in the Mail (sorry - best link I could find) about James McClean of Sunderland refusing to wear a poppy yesterday.

  • I was on a bus at 11am today. Have to say fair play to TFL or whoever runs them, all the ones in central London pulled over to the side of the road and turned off their engines for two minutes and we were all asked to take part in the two minutes silence. Absolutely impeccably observed by everyone on board and was really quite a special moment.

I've no idea if they do this all the time or if it's a new thing but I thought it was bloody brilliant.
  • This is all about respect is it to hard to ask for people to buy a poppy or even just take part in a 2 minute silence and show there respect for the thousands of people that have given there lifes, or have put there lifes at risk to keep the likes of us and footballers and everyone 'Free' !!

They gave everything to keep our independance and in a matter of years i'm scared the next generation's ahead are going to forget about the proper Heroes !

Not too sure Ad. Been going to the New Cross memorial for the last 22 years and it seems more "kids" attend every year. Must admit it is a pleasing sight.
  • Watched the Bristol Parade yesterday but didnt see the skater.

Was very well observed where i was
  • i think that every night at the Menin Gate in Belgium the local school kids go to the memorial . 45,000 British dead (statos to confirm)
Thats respect of the first and highest order.

Or very year at Oosterbek in Holland see what the local kids do. Most kids here wouldnt have herd of that place.

Thats very pleasing, and good on those kids .

However i believe we should be respecting the heroes as a whole nation the old and the young ,
without them heroes we would be playing in the bundesliga !
  • It was a great day for me yesterday, I laid a reef down in our towns rememberance service, it was such an honour to do so for the first time infront of friends and family in my number 1's uniform.

Personally, I have nothing against people who choose to wear a poppy, and likewise I do not expect people to have something against me when I do not wear a poppy. As for respect, I respect immensley those who have given their lives for our freedom and I always observe the 2 mins silence.

Surely just because people do not wear the poppy, it does not necessarily show a lack of respect does it?

You're new to this thread aren't you?
I agree with you, but there are some on here with very strongly held beliefs that the poppy should be worn by everyone.
I also respect the sacrifice of those before me but don't think that wearing a charity badge adds anything, especially as the state should cover in full the personal costs caused by sending people to war.
  • Yep I am new to this one, mainly because I knew how it would turn out. Against my better judgement I opened it today.
  • Think (personally) that the Real Point is the fact that because of these people, people have the choice to either wear or not wear the Poppy. There is a certain amount of "Poppy fascism" about, which to Me seems to ruin what Freedom is about. When I started this thread I made a point of the "Pease buy your poppy" title.

I know, and I hope you haven't been offended by anything I've said.

  • Glad to see that Celtic didn't decide upon any stupid banners yesterday.
  • Agree with you Mog, there is a huge amount of poppy fascism as you put it, on both sides. Like I said I have no problem at all with people wearing poppies or campaigning or even strating threads on it. My problem comes when others make me feel like I have no respect for those who fought for our freedom or that I am in some way less patriotic because I do not wear the poppy.

  • Royal British Legion

The 2014 Poppy Appeal launches tomorrow with a moving sunrise to sunset vigil at the Cenotaph in London, called 'The Watch'. We'll be live tweeting details and photos from the event at http://www.twitter.com/poppylegion using hashtag #TheWatch. Follow us Royal British Legion to not miss a moment!

'The Watch' has been inspired by the repatriation of the Unknown Warrior in 1920, where Guards of the Watch kept a vigil by the coffin as a mark of respect. Tomorrow, four members of the public will keep watch every half hour from 7.36am until 5.55pm.
  • You coming on Friday MOG?
  • Remember you can purchase one of the 800,000+ poppies currently around the Tower of London. £25 plus £5 post and packaging. Money goes to a number of charities. You will also have a 'piece of history'. The Tower looks amazing at the moment.

O/K you typed that two years ago. A simple question.

".As for respect, I respect immensley those who have given their lives for our freedom and I always observe the 2 mins silence."
So why do you feel unable to buy a poppy too? Genuine question.

They will be intact. I helped unpack them when they arrived at the Tower and the packaging was very good, so can't see a reason why they wouldn't put the same effort into the deliveries to peoples homes.

Some people choose to give to other charities, some buy poppies. It's just one of those things. Unless you think poppies should be compulsory

the freedom not to buy and support the sacrifice of the fallen is what they died for --- for enjoy it

PS you cant help being a c--nt tho
  • My question was aimed at Colthe3rd. I'd like him to answer for himself.
  • just a thought - you may have bought a metal poppy in previous years and fair play to you for doing so. BUT the charity still need as many donations as they can get so please donate again. I wonder whether the RBL have lost out due to the emergence of those metal badges?
