  • Thanks Phil.

He gets it up above the eyeline and turns it miles but consistency and control is difficult at the age of 10. Also bats well so has the two "strings to his bow" and wouldn't want him to be labelled too early as one or other - but it is the fact that he is a "leggy" that makes him different.
  • Kent Cricket Membership and Fixtures Announcements

Details of Kent Cricket membership options for 2014 will be posted during the week commencing 12th November

The 2014 fixture list will be released by the ECB on Tuesday 26th November
  • Thanks to you too Len.

Just a thought and that is (albeit that nowadays spin bowlers are expected to bowl "liquorice allsorts"), I can't remember Kent ever producing a leg spinner.

You never heard of Doug Wright? 2,000+ FC Wickets including a World Record 7 Hat-tricks. Both The Don and Keith Miller rated DVP Wright as one of the best leggies they ever played against.

    Shame on you Addick Addict.

You must be a lot older than me as I only go back to watching Kent from 1970 onwards and he finished playing in 1957.

The one major connection between young AA and DVP Wright is that both were born in Sidcup. Let's hope that's not the only coincidence. ;-)

  • Have you ever heard of WG Grace?

I have tried my best but have to confess that I do not recall him as being a Kent leg spinner from 1970 onwards. Did he only play a few games for us?

PS If you carry on like this I will tell everyone on this forum how, prior to your infamous wander onto the Canterbury hallowed turf, young AA got you out first ball.

Kent announce Rob Key is Captain again with Sam Northeast Vice.

Presumably Northeast will take over the following season (as rumoured previously) but has Treadwell (who "indicated he wished to step down") actually been deposed? Possibly so, not just because of possible one day international commitments but possibly because he's not guaranteed a place in the Kent side?

Northeast has a first class average of just over 30 and I'm not sure he's the next Brearley either!

NEW, or old, depending on how you look at it, Kent Cricket skipper Rob Key has said it is an exciting future for the county side.
Key was announced as captain for the 2014 season today (Wednesday) after James Tredwell stood down from the role. Key will be assisted by 24-year-old Sam Northeast as vice-captain.

And Key believes the future is bright, returning to skipper the side after a year-long absence.
Key said: "I’m delighted to take the reins again. I believe we have a talented group of players and I hope to lead them to success.

"It is an exciting time, absolutely. There are a lot of youngsters here and it is a challenge for me to take them forward into the players I know they can be.
"I had a year off and I did miss captaincy. Sometimes I really missed it, sometimes I was glad I wasn't doing it anymore, but it is an honour to captain the side.

"Sam and I have already had a meeting discussing what our plans are but this was only sorted out ten days ago. This time of year is exciting as we can knuckle down and plan out how we will attack next season.
"Captaincy is enjoyable, but the pressure is there. Obviously, I have done it before so that helps, and I am looking forward to working with Sam.
"He is a good friend of mine and is always one of those players who likes to have a chat and discuss things. He is captain material in the future, definitely."

Kent Cricket Membership and Packages for 2014 http://bit.ly/1fgIu48

Kent County Cricket Club has launched a great range of Memberships and Packages for the 2014 season, with something to suit all budgets.

2014 promises to be a watershed year for county cricket, with significant changes to the playing programme. In anticipation of the release of the full fixture schedule next Tuesday, we can confirm that most LV= County Championship matches will start on a Sunday - a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a day out with the family.

The Royal London One-Day Cup will be played during the school summer holidays, with four home day/night matches in the 50 over format, and the domestic t20 will now include seven home matches, predominately played on Friday nights, spread throughout the season.

Kent Cricket CEO, Jamie Clifford commented; “The 2014 schedule is going to offer more opportunities for more people to enjoy watching Kent Cricket more often.

“My hope is that the increase in times that the maximum number people can come and support will help increase uptake in Membership and Packages for the 2014. Having analysed the feedback we received at the end of the 2013 season – which told us what we were offering was about right – we have not dramatically changed the pricing or structure.

“I hope as many in the county as possible will take the opportunity, with increased evening and weekend cricket, to support Kent in 2014.”

Following feedback from our Members and Supporters, Kent County Cricket Club has maintained the 2013 structure for 2014 Memberships:

    • The All Rounder single price is unchanged for full, Over 65, Student, Family and Country Members, and includes entry to all home matches, including Sri Lankan

    • All ‘Friends’ are now charged at 75% of the full rate and remain transferable

    • Early Bird discount is available for 2014 Memberships and Packages

    • A £5 fee for the Kent Cricket Annual - a 55% discount on the public price

    • The Gold add-on allows transferability of your Membership and includes a complimentary Kent Cricket Annual.

Don’t forget, Early Bird prices are available until 31st December 2013, and there are lots more match days accessible for working people and families. With Early Bird Junior Memberships for just £20, and Six Pack only £95 this could be the ideal Christmas present.

New for 2014 - Introduce a friend and save

This year we want to encourage Members to ask friends and family to join the Club. When a friend or family member completes an application form and includes your name in the box listed as ‘Introduce a Friend’, you have the choice of either 10% of the value of the membership or package as cash back, or a voucher for the Kent Cricket Shop to the value of 12.5% of the Membership.

  • Pleased to say, first three weeks of Kent trial has gone very well for young AA. Just three more to go 'til we find out if he makes the winter training squad.

Highlight for me so far though was being able to speak to one of my boyhood heroes. A certain Asif Iqbal. He was there to watch his grandson who just happens to be in the same net as young AA.
  • Sponsored links:

  • Asif Iqbal, Colin Cowdrey, Derek Underwood, Alan Knott, Mike Denness & Brian Luckhurst. All names that remind me of what great teams Kent used to have when I was growing up. That was all a long time ago unfortunately. Let's hope for better things in the near future.

    http://www.kentonline.co.uk/kentonline/sport/kent-get-go-ahead-for-beckenham-9371/

Kent Cricket have been given the go-ahead by planners for an ambitious development of the club’s Worsley Bridge Road ground in Beckenham.
Work on the site could be just days away after Kent Cricket and Leander Sports & Leisure were granted full planning permission by Bromley Council for the project, which will enhance the cricket facilities at the ground.

Among the additions planned are an indoor cricket school which will be built to ECB Academy standards and a new 2,000-seat stand to boost the ground’s capacity.

Physiotherapy treatment rooms, a gym and pilates studio, a conference and banqueting area with room for up to 160 people plus bar and kitchen facilities are also planned.

The site will also host new offices, a floodlit 3G football pitch, two hard tennis courts and new car parking.

Work is expected to take about a year, with the club set to enter into a 20-year lease on it’s completion by contractors Galliford Try.

Kent chief executive Jamie Clifford said: “I’m delighted that full planning permission has been granted and we can now press ahead with the construction phase of the project.

“The club has for a long time wanted to develop its London base, and I look forward now to seeing a high-quality cricket venue in Beckenham.

“In addition to the potential it presents for hosting matches, it will also become a centre of excellence in a key part of the county. Our new indoor centre will provide us with a wonderful base from which to identify and develop young players.

“I would like to put on record my thanks for the support of the local community, Leander Sports & Leisure, and Bromley Council for their support in bringing the project a step closer.”

Negotiations are ongoing with a view to developing a health and leisure facility and a conference centre at the site.

Kent County Cricket Club release 2014 Fixture Schedule http://bit.ly/1coW3tp

Kent County Cricket Club’s fixture schedule has been released, and 2014 promises to be a watershed year for county cricket. With significant changes to the playing programme, there will be greater opportunities for more people to enjoy watching Kent more often.

Next year’s fixtures will be the first to be played under a new ECB schedule which will run until 2017 and has been introduced based on the recommendations of the Morgan Review into the domestic game and extensive customer feedback from more than 25,000 county cricket fans.

During 2014, five of Kent’s LV= County Championship matches will start on a Sunday, as well as two Saturdays (either day one or two), offering a wonderful opportunity to enjoy weekend cricket with the family.

The Royal London One-Day Cup replaces the Yorkshire Bank 40, and will be played during the school summer holidays, with four home day/night matches in the 50 over format.

The schedule also includes the NatWest T20 Blast, which includes five floodlit, Friday night home fixtures, spread throughout the season. A sixth floodlit match, against rivals Essex will take place on a Wednesday night, 11th June.

Kent’s action packed 2014 schedule includes an additional 19 days of weekend and evening cricket throughout the season, with many of these on Friday nights under floodlights.

Kent Cricket CEO, Jamie Clifford commented on the announcement; “The 2014 schedule offers more opportunities to enjoy watching Kent Cricket more often.

“I hope as many in the county as possible will take the opportunity – with increased evening and weekend cricket – to support Kent in 2014.”

Kent Cricket supporters can also look forward to three bank holidays of cricket during 2014, cricket in Tunbridge Wells in May, and Canterbury Cricket Week in August.

Another highlight of Kent’s 2014 season is a one day fixture against Sri Lanka in May, with entry to this match included in Kent’s All Rounder, All Rounder Gold, Championship Plus and Spitfire Memberships.

Following feedback from Members and Supporters, the Club have maintained their 2013 Membership structure, with the All Rounder single prices unchanged for full, Over 65, Student, Family and Country Members.

Kent Cricket are offering Early Bird rates on all Memberships and Packages in the lead up to Christmas. With Junior Memberships for £20, Six Packs for £95, and a new schedule making county cricket more accessible for all, there has never been a better time to join Kent Cricket.

ECB Chief Executive David Collier said: “The 2014 schedule has been designed to make the needs of the fans our number one priority.”

“We welcome Royal London to our family of domestic cricket sponsors for the first time and are also excited about the role the NatWest T20 Blast will play in attracting a wider audience to our county game – with Friday nights providing the perfect opportunity for fans to combine a weekend night out with watching cricket.“

  • another shit load of fixture, 50 overs moved from sundays to midweek, you get the best crowds for one day fixtures so just can't work out why move them from a sunday, we used to go a big crowd of us to Canterbury every year for a sunday game, well I aint paying to watch the dross of county championship, whoever is coming up with these ideas need there heads tested, Kent need to realise they have a lot of support from North Kent, day / night matches are no good to us with work the next day, it also means realistically we would have to drive which means no booze and we used to spend a fortune.
  • Agreed NSS. Only hope is that from 2015 that they will start to use Beckenham again.
  • Spot on, NSS. That's bonkers.

It's a long wait for Beckenham but that at least sounds promising. Am surprised they can afford to develop it tbh.

I suspect most of the money will be coming from Sports Grants given that it is being utilised as a North Kent base for up and coming talent in that area of the County.

Which I will be rather glad about if young AA does get through the current Kent U11 trials as Sidcup to Beckenham is a lot easier than Sidcup to Canterbury - and back!

  • Mog do you have a opinion other than just posting links.

Thanks Vincenzo and I am as much for the fact that the boy's talent is as much his commitment as any talent and it's always good to see that rewarded. And more to the point he loves playing the game, more than his other sports - tennis, football, rugby and hockey.

I'm concsious that people won't want this thread into another "boy done good" but happy as long as there isn't the same sort of reaction to that one, to update people as and when anything significant happens - and it certainly won't be a match by match report!

The list for the final assessment was posted last night on the Kent Cricket Board site and young AA is through. So, final two weeks and then we will find out whether he is part of the Kent Winter training squad. At which point one door may or may not close and another may or may not open.

Young AA is also a member of Min Patel's all age academy and they held their first session on Saturday. He was one of only two U11's in his session with the other seven boys made up of U13s (2) and U14s (5). Four of the U14s were in last season's U13's Kent side so he is in very good company and batted and bowled against all of them and held his own too. The guest coach was Simon Willis who is Director of Development at the County so, providing young AA is good enough, it won't be a case that the centres of influence won't have heard of him!
  • Pleased to announce that Young AA has made the final Kent U11 winter training squad.

This consists of 22 and will be reduced, following a dozen or so training sessions, to a summer playing squad of approximately 14.

    Fantastic news, AA !

Well done to you & your boy.

  • Thanks Fanny. He's off to Min's academy today. Last Friday, by all accounts, he was putting Tredders through his paces. Today it's Young AA's turn ;-)
  • which Junior club does he play for AA
  • Bexley. Current players with Kent first team squad are Adam Ball and Adam Riley. Obviously Min used play for a couple of decades for Kent too (and England in one Test too). Last season Bexley had Jimmy Pierson as their pro - he was the Aussie U19 opening bat and keeper and plays for Queensland too.

I played at 3rd team level for Sidcup for 30 years but currently manage the Bexley U11's (no coaching as we have far better qualified coaches than me- more an administrative role). Sidcup are a great club but for a number of reasons I just felt that Bexley would be the right club for Young AA. And so far I have to say it has been.

But of course Kent stalwart Min Patel forged his cricket career at Blackheath CC. Blackheath are SE London's premier cricket club, regularly putting out 6 or 7 professionals or very recent pros in their 1st XI.
Blackheath came 2nd again in the Kent League Premier Division last season only behind Hartley who pay their players a lot of money.
I've no idea where Bexley came or even what division Sidcup are in!

I played 1st XI for Blackheath in the 1980's and captained the 2nd XI in the Kent League.
Like AA I managed a colts team, but for 4 years and two of my charges are in the Kent U17 Winter Squad.

Hate to correct you old chap but Blackheath actually finished 3rd last season. And Bexley finished 7th.

Following promotion, Sidcup will be playing in Division 3 next season.

  • Tredwell aiming for Test place
    WRITTEN BY STEVE WOLFE

Kent spinner James Tredwell jets off to Australia today hoping to secure a place in the England Test side in Sydney.

The 31 year old will arrive half way through the Fourth Test in Melbourne after a late call up following Graeme Swann’s shock retirement.

With Monty Panesar and Scott Borthwick already part of the squad and competition stiff for the final Test of the five match series, Tredwell knows he stands every chance of carrying the drinks once again, but has told KSN he wants to do everything in his power to get a game.

SWann’s decision to retire from international cricket came as a bolt out of the blue and Tredwell explained how he found out he was not only going to be going to Australia for the T20 and One Day International series:

“It’s nice to know I’m still in their thoughts and in terms of logistics in was easy just to pull my flight forward.”

“It was James Whitaker that gave me the call to say I was going and it’s not the first time I have had the call to say I’d be joining up with the squad.”

“My wife and I were laying in bed watching the news come in that Swanny was going to be retiring and then the phone rang, but it was nice to receive that call.”

“Ideally I’d like to be in the squad from the beginning, but I guess that’s the challenge for me now.”

With England 3-0 down in the series and looking to restore some pride, Tredwell is hoping he’s not just going out to make up the numbers and has been working hard to show that he’s ready to play if called upon:

“I’m under no illusions that I’ll out there and be shipped straight into the team, but I think if conditions allow and if I’ve done all I can previous to the day of the game, then you never know.”

“If they decide to go in with two spinners at Sydney, hopefully I will be one of the ones they choose, but they’ve got Scott Borthwick there, so they’ve got options.”

Swann’s retirement caught most of the cricketing world by surprise, but Tredwell admitted he’d seen that there was some indications he might be leaning that way since the summer:

“It was a big shock and there have been some questions about his timing, but having played a fair bit of One Day cricket in the summer, I got the impression he was thinking along those lines in One Day cricket, but I didn’t see that he’d be thinking about complete retirement.”

“Thankfully I’m not at that point at the moment, but I guess when you do get to that point, when you’ve had enough, there’s not much point carrying on.”

Swann’s retirement opens the door for Tredwell who has made just the one Test appearance against Bangladesh in March 2010 and the Kent spinner is hoping he can now live up to the expectation of whoever replaces the Nottinghamshire man:

“I guess that is down to me. You can have people stand in your way, but you need to perform yourself and I think I have certainly done that in One Day cricket.”

“I think the last few months have been fruitful in that regard and now that is the challenge to make that happen in the longer form of the game.”

“It’s a great opportunity for someone at this point and they are massive shoes to fill as he’s been a magnificent performer for England over the last six or seven years.”

Being under the selector’s noses in the coming weeks, Tredwell has a great chance to push his case for selection in the long term, but he realises he faces stiff competition:

“Monty is in the box seat at the moment and a couple of good performances over the next few Tests and he is in the driving seat.”

“Ultimately, it is down to us to put performances in and the decision will be down to the selectors.”

Tredwell will go straight from competing for a place in the Test side to being the leading spinner for the T20 and ODI games against Australia and he told KSN how he’d been watching a bit of the Big Bash to keep an eye on some of the people he could well end up facing:

“I think you’ve always got to be doing a bit of analysis, but I saw a lot of some of their guys over the summer, so I don’t really need to see too much more footage, but I’ve watched a lot of the Test series and some of the Big Bash.”

“You can have all the plans in the world, but ultimately you can go out on the field and they don’t work and then you’ve got to come up with something else.”

“You try to be as well planned as you can, but you just hope your skills are up to the challenges you come up against.”

Like most families over Christmas, Tredwell spent it with his family and being a father of two now, he told KSN how he was glad that he’s been allowed the time at home and was given until Boxing Day before jetting off:

“It’s always nice to be home at Christmas and to be an extra pair of hands to help out.”

“I could well have jetted off and left the wife to it for the whole of Christmas, but I think that would have gone down like a lead balloon!”

“Even if I’d have left for Australia when I got the call, I wouldn’t have made it for the Melbourne game, so it was nice of them to allow me to spend Christmas at home.”
