Kent's chances of qualifying for the YB40 semi-finals hang by a thread after losing to Northamptonshire Steelbacks. http://bit.ly/1d5U4vS

    Spitfires chances take a blow
    WRITTEN BY JACK THOMAS

Kent Spitfires chances of qualifying for the YB40 semi-finals hang by a thread after a last gasp loss to Northamptonshire Steelbacks.

Opener Kyle Coetzer made a fine 90 and Cameron White contributed 65 as the Northamptonshire Steelbacks claimed an exciting Yorkshire Bank 40 victory over Kent Spitfires.

Kent made 188-7 in their 40 overs, Geraint Jones top-scoring with 46 not out, but the hosts got home with just two balls to spare, keeping their hopes of semi-final qualification alive.

The visitors opted to bat first but Rob Key went for a three-ball duck in the second over, hitting Steven Crook (3-36) to Matt Spriegel at deep square-leg.

West Indies international Brendan Nash made 34 before he was stumped by David Murphy off James Middlebrook and a Darren Stevens (10) edge then hit Murphy’s right leg and flew to point, where White took the catch.

It was 108-5 when opener Sam Northeast’s off-stump was knocked back by Crook but Jones made crucial runs at the end of the innings, adding 45 with Matt Coles (12 not out) in the final five overs.

Northants slipped to 32-2 when they replied, David Willey (2) holing out to deep square-leg and Mitchell Claydon trapping David Sales (7) lbw.

But Coetzer and White then put together a superb third-wicket partnership of 142 that put the hosts firmly on course for victory.

Cruising at 174-2, the hosts wobbled late, White hitting Coles to Key at backward point before Coetzer was caught behind off Stevens.

Claydon then hit Crook’s middle stump but Northants only needed three to win off the same bowler in the final over and scurried through for leg-byes on three of the first four balls to triumph.

The result moves Northants above their opponents and up into second in Group A, with two games left for both of these sides.

Kent won the toss and elected to bat.

Northants side: Coetzer, Willey, Sales, White, Wakely, Crook, Middlebrook, Spriegel, Murphy, Daggett, Azharullah.

Kent side: Key, Northeast, Stevens, Nash, Cowdrey, Jones, Ball, Tredwell, Coles, Claydon, Riley.

Result: Kent Spitfires 188 for 7 (40 overs), Northants 189 for 5 (39.4 overs). Northants won by 5 wickets.
  • Can't believe the season Northants are having!
  • Can't believe the "last gasp" remark above. I was there, and apart from say the first ten overs, when we had only lost one wicket, we were never in the game.

  • Darren Stevens in a spot of bother:

    http://www.espncricinfo.com/bangladesh/content/current/story/662345.html

Darren Stevens is among the players under investigation by the ICC's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) in connection with events during the 2013 Bangladesh Premier League.

Stevens, the 37-year-old Kent allrounder, has not been charged, it is understood, and is therefore free to continue playing. Kent are expected to make a statement shortly.

The charges, which followed an investigation carried out by the ACSU, relate to an alleged conspiracy within the Dhaka Gladiators franchise to engage in match-fixing and spot-fixing during the tournament, as well as failures by individuals to report approaches made to them to be involved in the conspiracy. The investigation against Stevens is understood to involve a failure to report approaches rather than any fixing.

The news will raise more questions about the viability of the BPL. Many players are still awaiting payment for their involvement in the 2013 season.

Kent Cricket captain James Tredwell says Kent must be aggressive in their final two Yorkshire Bank 40 group games

    by Alex Hoad

Skipper James Tredwell says Kent will be aggressive as they seek to keep alive their slim hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals of the Yorkshire Bank 40 competition by winning their final two games.

Tredwell admitted to disappointment after the Spitfires’ chances of a semi-final spot were all but ended by a five-wicket defeat at Northamptonshire Steelbacks on Tuesday, which left them needing to beat Warwickshire on Thursday, 4.40pm, and Group A leaders Notts on August 26, both at Canterbury, plus hope other results go their way.

After posting a below-par 188-7, Kent were beaten by the Steelbacks with two balls to spare and Tredwell said: “At one stage it didn’t look like it was going to be that close, so in the end it was a good effort.

“It was disappointing to lose. If we had maybe made 15 or 20 more with that bat then it might have been interesting but the real difference was their partnership (Kyle Coetzer and Cameron
    White).

“That took the game away from us and we found it tough to break it. If we’d managed to do it 10 or 15 overs earlier, it might have been a different game.”

He added: “We want to attack the last two games and try to win them both.
“Whether that will be good enough (to qualify), only time will tell.”

Well that was rather a waste of time and money. Match abandoned just when it was at a crucial part of the game.

Only highlight was the rather hilarious sight of a certain CL contributor invading the pitch in protest, with my son's bat in hand, to face the only two Warwickshire players left on the pitch. One ball later our man was duly escorted from the pitch only to return for a "lap of honour", bat raised aloft.

  • I have to say I reckon this is the worst Kent side I have ever known. A bit of bad luck here and there by all means but we're struggling in every competition we enter. Is this another in the never ending cycle of 'rebuilding' seasons?

It's not for me to say as I'm not one to "chirp" about such things but I can say that the gent in question spends some time on the Riviera and I have edited my comment with a picture him.

I don't know what game some of the posters on that forum were at but the ball to me was delivered by Laurie Evans of Warwickshire and it was certainly not underarm!
  • Equally, some in the crowd thought you didn't get anywhere near the ball. I'm afraid the "shadow" shots on the way to the square and on the "lap of honour" were far more convincing than the actual thing. And having examined my son's bat there is no "hot spot" so it has to go down as a "bye" in the scorebook.

    Come one!

Are you related to Colin Milburn?

  • Only in stature. The opposition never had eight men between long on and "cow corner" for Milburn.
  • Len Glover you're a cruel man.

Kent CCC agrees multi-million renovation contract
    19 August 2013 | By Ian McPherson

Kent CCC agrees multi-million renovation contract
Kent County Cricket Club have agreed a deal with Leander Sports & Leisure for the redevelopment of the team’s Worsley Bridge Road ground at Beckenham.

The agreement will see the multi-purpose venue, which serves as an outground for the Kent first XI and also hosts second XI games as well as soccer and hockey tournaments, undergo a multi-million pound development project by Galliford Try Plc.

Work will include an indoor cricket school, a 2,000-capacity spectator stand and new conference, banqueting and bar facilities. Meanwhile, an astroturf soccer pitch, two hard standing tennis courts, car parking and floodlights will also be installed.

According to an official press release, the club will enter a 20-year lease following the completion of the building work. Negotiations continue regarding the construction of a health and leisure facility and a conference centre.

Kent Cricket’s chief executive Jamie Clifford said: “This is extremely exciting news for Kent County Cricket Club. We have been committed to developing a high quality cricket ground in Beckenham for over a decade. This latest advance will allow us to truly state that we have a centre of excellence in a key part of the county.

“The new indoor centre will provide us with a fantastic base from which to identify and develop young players. In addition, the ground enhancements will open up opportunities for staging matches in the future.”
