  • Lone Survivor

One of the best war movies i have seen in a long time. You really feel you are part of the action. Reminded me a lot of Southern Comfort - Recomended

    Superb film.

Out of the furnace ...excellent film, terrific acting by Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson and Casey Affleck. 9/10

Enjoyed that one too, although the
reviews I have seen since have been more lukewarm.
  • Filth

I had been looking forward to seeing this for a long time but i couldn't help but feel disappointing with it. Great performances from James McAvoy and Eddie Marsan but this is almost too grim to enjoy. There are some very good touches though , like the David Soul cameo and the upbeat final credits.

  • Lone Survivor - If you liked Black Hawk Down then this is well worth watching. Didn't know anything about the film beforehand and could not help thinking some of the combat scenes were similar to the real life events in the documentary Restrepo. Grimaced at least 2 or 3 times!

The Wolf on Wall St.......Some real belly laugh moments especially at the Country club with the Lamborghini, but overall far too long and I found the glorification of wanton drug taking far too much. I realise its a black comedy of the age etc, but the film left me with mixed feelings and the next morning I have to say that I wouldnt bother watching it again....I'll go 5/10 purely on the acting ability of De Caprio and above mentioned Lambo scene.

Well I'm more with you on this one Tel, and so is the wife. What is Scorsese trying to tell us? That there was huge excess? Yeah Ok, we get it. Three hours to say that? Got to say that a lot of people in the cinema obviously found it very funny, but I didn't particularly. They were much younger, and probably thought what they were seeing was beyond ridiculous. I've got news for them.

I read that they are doing a 4 hour cut for the DVD and the producer admitted it doesn't add much, mainly the sex scenes are longer . Pretty cynical

But the acting and camera work are both first rate. I'll give it 6.

Looking forward to American Hustle, looks like Captain Philips will have to be DVD.

  • Agree with the lone survivor, fantastic film also The spectaclar now really enjoyed that too

    Inside Llewyn Davis

Unlike anything the Coen brothers have done before. This is extremely slow burning but strangely hypnotic. This definitely will not be everyones cup of tea.
    Good performance from Oscar Isaac.

  • Went to see 12 Years a Slave last night. It would be a stretch to say I enjoyed it because of the general film content but it did 'entertain' for over 2 hours. However, it did drag slightly in places I thought. This is probably quite a true depiction of how slaves were treated in the deep South.

Agree..... and fours would be a real killer. Cant see the point myself. I've missed American Hustle, I had family over when it was released here and now it seems to have been taken off the network. So that will be a dvd for me too unless Foxtel broadcast it.
  • Side Effects

Side Effects feels like a bad episode of CSI ( some would say they are all bad) . It tries too be clever but it falls short by a long way . My biggest criticism though , is that it just dull.

  • I really didn't think W of WS was too long. What would you cut? It seems to be thing to say to cut 20min because Mark Kermode said it.
I checked my watch at what I thought was about half way and there was only 20 mins left.
Now as for Gravity, that was too long, by about 87mins.

  • Summary of Wolf on Wall Street.:

A wide boy salesman realised he can get stinking rich by ripping people off. When he did, he spent the money getting shit faced, high as a kite, shagged loads of hookers, and behaved like a knob to both his wives. Oh and in the end he did get a short prison sentence. Loads of people suffered, but that isn't good box office, so we won't show any of that. " people are adult enought make up their own minds about the moral side"

Oh and we've done a four hour version with longer sex scenes.

    Yep, fully merits three hours...

  • I Frankenstein

I haven't watched this film but had the misfortune to watch a trailer whilst waiting for 12 years a slave to start. It was absolute pap. That bloke that Beds hasn't heard of wasn't impressed either.

I'm quite familiar with Wittertainment. I'm just pulling Riveria's chain. ;-)
  • I knew I should have put a smiley :-)
  • Saw the trailer for Bad Neighbours the other day, looks really crap but funny.

I'll be interested in what you think of The Momuments Men Beds? Trailer looked good, but the often do. Lukewarm reception from the critics I hear.

  • 12 Years A Slave......didn't fancy it but have to admit it's actually a stunning film. The cinematography in itself captures that deep south look, add to this excellent performances by the three male leads and poor old Patsy makes this an outstanding film.....harrowing in parts, but thought provoking and a very brave film indeed. 9/10

Correct. At last someone has cottoned on. Did you see it? Can you really say you thought it was a good film? Yes the special effects were terrific. Yes the images of the earth and moon from outta space were breathtaking, and yes the level of 3D was the best I have experienced at the cinema. But how long can you marvel at these? 5 mins? 10mins at most. The film had a very shallow plot, hardly any dialogue and a cast of about 3 people. This does not make for 90 mins entertainment. But of course Tinseltown are falling over themselves to chuck as many awards to this film as possible as are our own BAFTA bods.
    Why?
  • Thought Wolf was the funniest film i'd seen in a long time! The bit in the office talking about the midgets was hilarious!
  • Beds, I put it on The Bridge thread but no one has come back to my question about the Belgium series starting on BBC4 this Saturday. Is it any good, do you know? Trailers sounded promising, so will probably give it a go. Cheers, in advance.
  • Saw Inside Llewyn Davis last week - that's 2 hours of my life I ain't getting back.

Yes if you care to scroll back you will see my review...its all subjective mate, as it happens I did enjoy it.
  • I have not gone to The Bridge thread as i have still got four episodes to see and i don't want any spoilers.

The programme you are talking about is Salamander on BBC4 at pm Saturday.

Couldn't agree more - 3D effects great but the plot was extremely lazy.

  • Vendetta

I could say this is not the worst Danny Dyer film ive ever seen but that's like saying this is not the worst case of piles i have ever suffered.
Seriously though this is not half as bad as you may expect. Dyer is the best thing about the movie simply because the rest of the cast are pretty amateurish .The action scenes are pretty good to be fair.

  • The Great Beauty -7/10

Critically acclaimed, it has won the Golden Globe for the Best Foreign Language film and is Oscar-nominated in the same category. It is certainly visually stunning and the lead is very strong but, for me, it was a little disappointing, particularly as I had fairly high expectations of this film.

It comprises a series of vignettes with no real narrative structure and felt like a triumph of style over substance (although maybe that is partly the point, given that it follows the decadent and vacuous lifestyle of rich socialites in Rome). It is a little derivative of La Dolce Vita but without that film's satirical edge and originality. It also felt a little over-long.
