  • Quite by chance I picked up a book a few years ago called "The Book Thief" It started off in an odd way and I was strangely touched by an early death in the book.....so tonight I went to see the film and it was every bit as good as what was an excellent book...condensed, yes, but the film definetly captured the books essence. Rush was perfect, Watson was terrific and the kids all indeed awesome in a gritty tale set in WW2 Germany. For me this is another very, very good film and Im giving it 8.5/10.......sad in part in the film, chilling and heart wrenching in the book...one to bring a tear to the eye.
  • Saw Dallas Buyers Club last night. Tbh, didnt know what it was about until I read the paragraph on IMDB as it was downloading. Ahem cough. McConaughey was excellent. Cant believe how much weight he must have lost to play the part, especially at the end, unless it was air brushed.

looking forward to this ... loved the book
  • I watch Oblivion last night on Sky Premier (it came out last year sometime) - not bad , but if you can explain the plot to me I'd be grateful. 6/10 for the action sequences with the drones alone.

I was disappointed in this, also 6/10
  • The Human Race............do not watch this garbage, you have been warned.

Saw The Book Thief and hated it. Rose-tinted, tear-jerking, crowd-pleasing lies with some of the crassest dialogue I've squirmed through for ages. Will no doubt be a huge success.

Saw it this afternoon ...vey good film, and in my view should get best actor and supporting actor in the Oscars ...wonderful performances. 9/10

Digital Piracy on a film that had a smaller budget than the price of Leyton Orient!!!

Ditto. Brilliant writing and acting, with McConnaughey and Leto both superb. For those who like great cinematography and visual stimulation, this film won't score as highly.

  • Monuments Men, easy to watch film, nothing spectacular ...if you like Kelly's Heroes, it is in the same mode. 7/10
  • The Councellor

I really liked this . Some great performances , especially from Michael Fassbender. It would probably take another viewing at least , to fully understand the whole story though.

    8 out of 10

Not a bad film, but I agree that Fassbender did extremely well.
  • Beds, I put it on The Bridge thread but no one has come back to my question about the Belgium series starting on BBC4 this Saturday. Is it any good, do you know? Trailers sounded promising, so will probably give it a go. Cheers, in advance.

Worth watching, but not in the same league as The Bridge or the other Scandis, IMO. The characters do not seem to be as complex. But nicely shot, and may give us some insight into the mess that is Belgium underneath the affluent surface.

Gravity has just won a Bafta for best British film - I know someone who will be pleased ;-)

Edit : make that six Baftas in all.
  • Saw the new tinkerbell film this afternoon, very moving.
  • The Railway Man, saw it today. Wonderful, amazing film!

I watch Oblivion last night on Sky Premier (it came out last year sometime) - not bad , but if you can explain the plot to me I'd be grateful. 6/10 for the action sequences with the drones alone.

OK - here goes. Spoilers, naturally.
Alien intelligent life comes to Earth in the near future. Probe sent up containing Tom Cruise and saucy English bird gets captured. Alien intelligence wipes out nearly everyone on Earth. Clones Tom and English bird and sets them to work maintaining pumping stations draining the Earth's water supply, spinning them a yarn about civilisation on Titan, and their memories being wiped after some some cataclysmic previous event. Clone Tom has residual memories of Hot Russkie Babe who turns out to be his former wife, who was also on board the original probe, but jettisoned to deep orbit. Original probe is brought back to Earth and crashed, where TC rescues Hot Russkie Babe. TC clone meets an exact copy of himself (TC Clone #2) and defeats him in a fight. Meanwhile Morgan Freeman and a bunch of other people survived the apocalypse wrought by the alient intelligence and are trying to sabotage it. They explain this to Tommy, who agrees to blow the thing up. Tommy succeeds, TC clone #2 meets Hot Russkie Babe, who TC clone #1 has spirited away in secluded spot.

So - basically - Event Horizon, 2001 AD, Planet Of The Apes and (most blatantly) The Matrix all rolled into one movie.

Still enjoyable though - for the visuals and the fantastic soundtrack alone

Thanks - now all makes sense
  • Saw 12 yeras a slave last night, the acting was great from the whole cast. Bloody good movie, feared it would be another roots but far better than that.
  • Had a bit of a catch up in the last few days...

Last Vegas. Think a rubbish version of The Hangover with De Niro, Freeman, Kline and Douglas. 6/10.
The Armstrong Lie. If you're into your cycling, well worth a watch. 7.5/10.
Gravity. See, said I was catching up. 7.5/10
Runner Runner. Ben Afleck runs the world's biggest Ponsi scheme and is brought down by Justin Timberlake. 5/10.

Yes, I saw it last week and the film was well shot and acted etc. I just felt that they could have made more of the true story i.e. more of his life before being kidnapped and certainly more of his tribulations after he was released (family life and court cases). By spending 95% of the film on his life as a slave made it seem like other slave films.

I left the cinema feeling mildly disappointed.

  • just watched - Dallas Buyers Club - twelve years a slave and American Hustle which are all fantastic films.
If anyone wants a fantastic film site streamed in HD 720p drop me a message.
  • Anyone seen Searching For Sugarman? Great story. Also recommend The Devil and Daniel Johnston. Two great films.

    Roots was the dogs b@llocks

    My name is Kunta kentei.

Yes great film. One of the better documentaries I saw last year along with the one about the two scots lads that posed as Americans to launch a rap career.

  • Homefront

If i had a guilty pleasure when it comes to movies it's probably Jason Statham movies. You know exactly what you are going to get with his films. Homefront it no exception but it's certainly one his weaker efforts . Surprising really considering the cast includes James Franco .
