    Wimpy Burger Bars

    I'm showing my age here!

A lot of the Lyons Corner shops actually became Wimpy Bars in  the late 60's early 70's.
Certainly the ones in the Strand and Fleet Street.

  • Bewlay & Co. - Pipe and tobacco merchants.

I remember when I started work in Somerset House, many many years ago; the Bewlay & co in the Strand had such a Dickensian vibe about it.
And an amazing display of pipes on view
  • the cinema by woolwich ferry roundabout. used to go every week. remember when they opened the second screen and had a showing of back to the future 3 before it went nationwide - special guest was jimmy greaves!
    That would be the Odeon
Although the Granada opposite was also a cinema before it became a Bingo hall - I saw Mary Poppins there back in '64.
(Unfortunately was just too young to see the Stones play there)

There were 5 Cinema's in Woolwich at one time, according to me Mother

I saw the Dad's Army feature film at the Odeon Woolwich and Holiday on the Buses at the ABC in Eltham High St.

Saw Life of Brian in 79 at the Granada Welling. The original Halloween at Lewisham Odeon, all those cinemas now long gone.

The was a cinema in Beresford Square (The Gaumont, I think) and another on the right heading towards Plumstead but can't remember the name, possibly The Regal. I saw my first 3D film there:' The Charge At Feather River'. Native Americans chucking spears and tomahawks at me for two hours.
  • I remember I saw Star Wars and Rocky at Lewisham Odeon. And Madness, supported by The Go-Gos, who got a particularly hard time from the Skins in the audience.

Little Richard, Everly Brothers, and starting the first half,  Rolling Stones.  Lewisham Odeon 1964,  correct me if I'm wrong about the year!

Starburgers has become Star Restaurants and selling better range. Woolwich and Greenwich plus others.

Casey Jones was run by British Rail Catering and became Burger King outlets.

    Crusty is right.

Greasy Jones, as it was known when I worked at Victoria station, was the in-house grease burger joint run by British Rail catering at all the principle London stations.

I'm sure I heard that all Lyons Corner House shops had Masonic temples above them. Serious.

The sports shop that was in the Old Kent Road is now a Costcutter or similar.

The World Turned Upside Down has gone too.

I ride into work a couple of days a week now and go straight up the old kent road and by a coincidence as i went past it yesterday i was thinking that to myself that i thought there used to be a sports shop there - had a proper old shop front and snooker tables, like you say. Another great sports shop was Alpats in Lewisham - small but always had the latest boots and trainers.

Can't be arsed to read the whole thread but anyone remember the school uniform suppliers that used to be in Sidcup, down by Lamorbey? Can't for the life of me remember the name of the place and it's bugging me now.
