I know Eric Thomas was in Bexleyheath and something tells me they had a Sidcup branch. There was a Paynes menswear I used in Bexleyheath long after my schooldays, think they catered for the er, more well-fed gentleman.
Allders department stores- I spent 10 years working for them in Elthams and Bromley- after I left they immediatly went expansion crazy opening stores all over the place- and then just as suddenly they went bust and now the only store left is the original one in Croydon
I was in Woolwich today and the huge Woolwich Equitable building is now empty apart from a doctor's surgery taking up a tiny part. Woolwich Building Society was absorbed by Barclays a few years back. As for Parks of Lewisham, I bought a motorbike from them donkeys years ago. Total shite.
Have to say it makes me weep to see the demise of any independent record shop. I used to work in one in York called Track Records and loved every minute. Was there from 87-92, during the exciting 'Madchester', Acid House and explosion of hip-hop era. Good times! I left with a heavy heart cos I wanted to follow Charlton but continued to go in as a customer. Unfortunately it closed four years ago after 25years trading. Rising rents and downloading killed it. York had three quality independents, now it has none.
We used to have two independant record shops in Eltham in 70's/80's. Harlequin Records next to the fire station and Derek's Records up the side of Boots by the Eltham Grill.
It was Derek's Records as stated. I remember the bloke you mean.
I lived in Avery Hill from 1971-1991 and do not remember a bicycle shop, there was a Motorcycle shop there in early 70's. Used to be a top parade - Fishmongers, two butchers - A Co-op one next to the Co-op supermarket (which had a deli) and an independent one. A greengrocers, a bakers (Ackermans), fish and chip shop (still there) launderette, chemist, hardware shop, dry cleaners, car spares, Davies sweet and toy shop, electrical shop, car spares, womens boutique, Spar, Chinese take-away, hair dressers, Cattarina's a habadashery, Martins newsagents. All changed now, lots of closed down shops there. The whole parade looks rather depressing, it was a vibrant array of shops in the 70's but I guess that is the way the country has gone.
Kennedys...the SE London chain of catering shops that used to do wonderful pies, sausage rolls, cooked cold meats etc...........originaly from Peckham, where the stuff was cooked, prepaired and then distributed. They had two branches in Bromley Town Centre until a few years back, as well as many throughout SE London. Fantastic products and no doubt greatly missed by one and all.
Not so much a shop but the ABC cinema at the standard for saturday morning pictures. Now a Sainsburys. Pictures, home for a sandwich, down to the Valley, on the way home pick up Fish'n'chips, watch Dr Who. Perfect.
There used to be three cinemas in Catford Rushey Green back in the 50's and early 60's. The beautiful art deco Eros(which would be grade listed if it were still standing nowadays)...The Gaumont (or Queens as some called it) and The Plaza.
There was an ABC in Eltham High St too. Now Millets and Clarkes etc. Used to go Saturday Morning Pictures there and also went to see on of the On The Buses films there. On the opposite corner of Passey Place was a Ladbrookes sports shop, it was opened by the late Bobby Moore, 1976/77. Now some dodgy cheapo shop.
There was also a fantastic record shop in South Moulton Street just off Oxford Street and I think it was called One Stop Records where you could buy US imports. I remember buying an album there called Super Session with Mike Bloomfield and Steven Stills before his CSYN days. the best thing was that they let you listen to a whole album if they weren't busy.
Also does anyone recall Len Stiles music in Lewisham? great store the manager was a top bloke used to let us have a go on the Fenders even though we didn't have two pennys to rub together.
Pats Textiles - Eltham, Corkies - Avery Hill, Caters in Eltham where the argos is now - then became Presto. Heinz before Allders was there. Showells - toys and games top of High Street, James Terry - Farrah heaven.
"Deadly" Dudley Burns Barbers, Delroys, Eatwells, and sundry other shops in Herbert Road. There used to be a cobbler called Mr Goodall somewhere round the back of Barnfield Gardens on an unmade road and a petrol station in Herbert road.
Anyone remember a specialist rock record shop called Shades, was in St Anne's Court, Soho I think? They made some money out of me when I was a teenage metalhead!

Eclectic mix of motorbikes.
Great spares department downstairs, just by the Lewisham Hospital.
As for Parks of Lewisham, I bought a motorbike from them donkeys years ago. Total shite.
The sports shop in the old kent rd was called john bennetts.......remember it well
Did it have large arched windows?
I left with a heavy heart cos I wanted to follow Charlton but continued to go in as a customer. Unfortunately it closed four years ago after 25years trading. Rising rents and downloading killed it. York had three quality independents, now it has none.
Crying shame.
Chirpy: Was the record shop by Boots called Derek's? The fella who had it used to drink in the White Hart; his name was Chris Wellard.
Also there was a pet shop in Craigton Road that had a stuffed mongoose in combat with a stuffed cobra hanging on the wall.
