I like Manish and Clem's section. His podcast is good too: the fact that he spends his time thinking and talking about the league shines through. Claridge is terrible and so is Leroy, but let's get this into perspective. This board and the world at large is full of people whining about the amount the BBC spends, so if they were flying Gullit and Leonardo over to do a late night lower league show, they'd be subject to criticism for that too.
Lizzy's section is poor, but it's not entirely her fault. Ask football fans to give their views and you're going to get a mixture of idiots whining and idiots crowing. Her match reports on Saturday afternoon are OK. They'd be better cutting it out, but at the end of the day I'm grateful that they do a show: a few years ago the only option to watch non-topleague football was a late night show on ITV.
On any given Saturday there's around 35 plus football league games to cover in a show that's no longer than match of the day. MoTD has about 7 to cover in the same period. Exactly how long do the moaners think should be afforded to a club flopping about in the third division? Thirty minutes I suppose.
We've had more than our fair share on the Monday night magazine show on Mondays, and I like that show in general.
On the subject of Clem's reports, last weekend's on Plymouth was very good. But it begged the question: what kind of club thinks "we're in massive financial trouble, better get Peter Ridsdale in"??
If the Football League Show was to be improved the following things need to be done:
1)Cut out the pointless text and e-mail shite, it really is dreary and not needed eradicating Lizzie Piper-Bowles-Gumphrey-Wingnutt completely
2)Cut the endless shots of managers/players with daft headphones getting off coaches and signing autographs
3)Cut the endless footage of teams coming out of tunnels and shaking hands with each other
4)Cut Steve Claridge
5)Cut Endless low scoring games featuring QPR taking up 25% of the show to a more reasonable 5 minutes
add
1)More actual football footage
2)Leroy Rosenior- he seems to actually enjoy being on the show and has genuine enthususiasm
Clem's bit is like Marmite you either find it interesting or superfluous
I don't expect to see Charlton occupying vast swathes of the show but I would like to see a bit more actual football on the show generally, whatever the division.
Is there not an argument for the BBC amalgamating their football coverage so that there is one, extended highlights show ? You could then devote, say, two ½ hours to English football in its entirety from the weekend – retain the best pundits (as a measure of how bad the Football league’s panellists are you’d have to say that the MOTD crowd are probably better than them). You could show the six most exciting games from across the leagues (obviously you’d show bias towards the Prem and to a lesser extent the Championship). Typically how that would normally break down would be the best 3 or 4 Prem games, invariably invoving the bigger clubs if playing, one Championship and one from either League One/Two. Then show five mins of the three or four least exciting prem games and then the goals from the Championship , league one and two as per usual.
Surely that show would be more efficient (both in terms of time and economics) and more attractive the majority of fans ? The plastic big four fans would still get the same level of coverage as previous plus fans of lower level teams, which still constitute a large number of viewers, would get their highlights in a more attractive package with arguably better insight provided by the experts ?
It seems odd that no one questions the logic of having two expensive shows, one after the other, both showing football highlights from the same countries leagues ?
The best pundits don't have to be expensive- I think opinionated is best. And yes, review what were the most entertaining 5 or 6 games and show extended highlights of them - whatever league they have been played in. This applies to the Championship, where they can spend too long on a rubbish game and show a few seconds of a good one.
They would argue that they put extra cameras and commentators at certain games, but it doesn't matter how many angles you have- a dour 1-0 or 0-0 is going to send you to sleep after 12 at night.
Identify the good games- they have the advantage over MOTD with more to choose from - have some commentators to do the commenatruy from the tapes and base the show around these.
Lose the Lizzie and Clem slots - possibly have some journo pundits who are a bit controversial and speak their mind and you would have a much more edgy, entertaining show IMO. Also extend it by half an hour and repeat it at a suitable slot on BBC3 on the Sunday.
I think the producers should be trying to beat MOTD for entertainment and if they took the above approach, they would have the tools to do so. Begs the question though, would the BBC want this? I don't think teh ITV show was much better BTW- a little, but not much.
[cite]Posted By: Saga Lout[/cite]Ok, on the Sky point, I've noticed we NEVER get a goal featured in the Leagues 1 & 2 roundup on Soccer AM. Never. Why? I don't remember them ignoring us in quite the same way as they seem to be doing this season.
I go to home games and therefore dont need to watch highlights having seen it already. If i was that bothered about seeing the away action id hop on a train and go to the game before berating the beeb or the media for not devoting ample time to a club that is pretty irrelevant to anyone outside of our league and parts of SE London/ NW Kent.
Also dont need insight from experts as am capable of making my mind up about my club that i know more about that someone like Claridge (although i do respect him).
As for other teams hightlights have absolutely no interest.
All the action is on the internet within a couple of days anyway.
I met someone from Late Kick Off last year and he implied that the Beeb had over done the FLS with all the Newcastle love. This year they seem to have been fairer to the top teams in the Champ, QPR are top and Leeds do tend to be involved in highscoring games so understandable if people think they get the most coverage.
I actually like the FLS, of course Lizzies emails are very pointless and Steve I have played for every club and with every player Claridge is annoying but for me it is good they show all the goals in an hour and a half and it is better than any coverage of the FL that has gone before, the positives outweigh the negatives. Do not mind Clem's pieces but agree with a few more cuts, they could get more action in. We do not need to see managers getting off the coaches as said above.
There was a great article in When Saturday Comes mag about the FLS, the best bit was regarding when Lizzie says "we want to hear what YOU think", Joe from Ipswich hears this in his drunken sad state after a dour day at Portman Road really believes that this reasonably attractive posh bird does WANT to know why he thinks Keane is not the man for the job. Sums it up really as surely most people that email/txt in are drunk, tragic or on a wind up.
Ive had to resist numerous urges from texting "Rodney from Beckenham would like to see Mike Hunt on the pitch at The Valley as this would shock a lot of addicks"
Have to agree to be honest that we never get a mention really and as you say after 4 games 4 wins and 3 goals from BWP already. Stupid show anyways. F*** em!
Agree with the guy who said it's better than what we used to have-a programme on at midnight on itv. Think the BBC does a really good job. If you don't like the show turn it off and watch the highlights on the BBC web page or fast forward through iplayer.
We dont get the pundits, or that woman who seems to be a favourite on here.
They show all the championship highlights, 1 game from L1 and 1 game from L2, and usually it's brighton who get the league 1 spot on the show. They do show the tables, but i could get that from any website.
36 games to show in 85 mins. Less say 15 mins talking, less say 10 mins for the main match = 36 games in 60 mins = 1.5 mins per game approx.
What do you propose ?

We only get half hour of this show here in Oz.

Still watch it though.
Sounds like the format I'd like but I'd add half an hour of extra football footage!
Don't know what we are all moaning about, they showed a "highlight" of our game after the main coverage, and Lizzy read out two e-mails about the game...
Couple of things from last night, Didn't know Gary Johnson was at Northampton and still hasn't won a game there, in fact the last game they won was 1st Feb and congrats to Chesterfield, top since NOV and they took 2000 fans to Oxford!
Couple of things from last night. Did none of the people working on that show think Semedo's sending off was ridiculous? Don't they realise that you're not allowed to handle the ball?

even BWP overhead kick didn't make it
This is a bugbear of mine. What the hell is that all about ??

No.
I told them to do this on twitter

Getting rid of the Palarse Cow would be a start.
