Peru’s opponents, being in CONMEBOL, are typically a lot stronger than Senegal’s opponents. Peru had some decent results against top 20 opposition through 2022 while Senegal lost/drew games against the likes of Liberia, Zambia and Eswatini.Chris_from_Sidcup said:

Senegal not in the top 20 despite winning the AFCON and making the last 16 of the world cup?I’m sure most know how the Elo system works. Points are awarded (and taken) every match based on the strength of opponent faced, margin of victory and match importance. The single drawback you could argue is that by not playing matches, you can’t lose points. So unlike Denmark or others who got to the World Cup but has bad showings, Peru’s point total didn’t change.3

Portugal were ranked 4th before losing to Morocco and have been consistently top 8 over the last 3-4 years.johnnybev1987 said:

By comparison, England really screwed themselves by losing twice to Hungary which dropped us from 5th/6th before the Nations League to outside the top 10 before the World Cup started.1
