  • Never into comics meself, was looking at Escort and Razzle from the age of about 8 though I think!
  • Dandy and Viz
  • Used to have the Topper and Beezer delivered. Always the broadsheets for me!

Was thinking about the American Civil War cards only the other day, having been to watch Lincoln.

Wondered if they were to commemorate the 100th Anniversary? Didn't occur to me at the time.

TV 21 then later the Beano. Can't remember why such a radical change...but my dad was on Vulcans in the RAF so I guess anything with big armed flying machines in it did it for me aged 7...
  • Me and my brother got the beano, dandy, beezer and topper annuals every crimbo, but my fave was Krazy comic, with that funny looking 3 eyed alien that looks like a jelly with a tv aerial on his head, then later 2000AD.
Whilst at school me and a friend made our own comic based on Madness, all the band had adventures, well it lasted 4 issues!

Got the 2-dollar bill right in front of me at this moment.
Scanner's up the pictures - but I'll knock out a photo later to upload.

You're sure to remember them when you see it.

    HELP!

I've got the photo of the Confederate 2 dollar bill saved on my desktop - how do I upload it to this thread?

I know what you mean. I went to watch Lincoln once and it was like the civil war that match as well.

Oggy, well what I do (although its clearly not entirely right as you get the small and actual size versions shown), is use the "attach" a file" link below the comments box, then hit the browse button to get to desktop.

Just bumped into this old thread and I used to read the Commando war comics when I was a kid, erm, 50 odd years ago. This caused me to do a web search and I couldn't believe that not only are they still in production - up to around edition no 4600 - but they have increased output to 8 editions a month. There's also kindle and iPad versions of course!

I remember them in the mid-60s, quarter the size and much thicker than a normal comic - about the size of the Palace programme in those days.

Recently came across my old biscuit tin full of my childhood cigarette and tea cards.
And right at the bottom was a Confederate States 2-dollar bill, given out with the American Civil War cards bubblegum pack.

    Remember them?
Fantastic ...dont know what happend to mine ...remember that image as if from yesterday ...those bubble gums used to take ages to break down into something vaguely chewable !

    thanks for the memory

  • The Dandy, sometimes The Beano, though I do remember reading other people's comics like Whizzer and Chips and Cheeky...
  • Match
    Smash Hits

i remember them and particularly that one, they were gruesome considering the the time they came out mid sixties i think?

  • Beezer. Colonel Blink, short-sighteed gink. Numskulls. Loved it all.

i really liked old colonel blink, very funny.

    Mad

Mad magazine was fantastic, funny enough i've been looking over the net recently for any info on it.

was i the only one in the world who read the Lion and paddy payne world war 2 fighter pilot?
  • Was a big fan of the Marvel comics. Used to read all the various X-Men (and related) titles, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man etc. Used to go to comic shops in Bexleyheath and New Cross with great anticipation when the new releases came out each month.

  • Tiger and (not quite a comic) Football Monthly with the Annuals at Christmas.

Same here. Plus the Beano, Dandy and Beezer which were all compulsory educational reading.

    Football Monthly was brilliant.

  • I used to read Bunty, June and Schoolfriend, Judy and when I got older I read Jackie. So there are three ladies reading this thread.
  • I started off with Pippin (late 60s), graduated to Scorcher and Score in 1973 which became Tiger and Scorcher in 1974. I started getting Shoot in 1977 and switched to Smash Hits in 1979 and then Record Mirror.

Remind me did you have to spot certain 'hidden' objects on the front cover of the Pippin?
  • The one that set the standard for the rest, often imitated, never beaten!

Indeed, Mosscat ( well, you'd THINK so anyway!)

  • Whilst my elde broth got The Eagle, I got this:

I also used to read Jackie - moved on to Just 17 and Mizz when I was older!

I loved the smaller digest size books, similar size to those the blokes have mentioned but obviously aimed at girls, so lots of stuff about boarding schools and puppies!
  • I remember at the beginning of each season a few comics gave away a cardboard table of divisions 1-4 and you had to collect the teams in each division which slotted in the league table, from the following weeks comic.

First divison one week, second division teams the next and so on.

Did anyone ever keep these up to date all season? Mine used to tail off about mid-september, probably when we did.

League Ladders, they were called. We (my lad and I ) preferred the big wallsheet that came with Roy of the Rovers. But it only applied to one team, not the whole division or league.
