  • Getting excited now. Just hope this tournament doesn't get remembered for the issues of racism that have been highlighted before the competition. I have been a bit critical of the team selection and the whole lead up to it has been underwhelming ( normally I can't with for these occasions ) but now that it is upon us I am getting right behind the team and come monday the flags will be flying. COME ON ENGLAND!
  • Alan Shearer's shit eating grin is annoying me already and he's only been on for 5 minutes!
  • Keane and Viera- awkward!!
  • Who said group A was the boring group??

Brilliant day to open a tournament.

Agree with that. Didn't catch the first half of the early game but very much enjoyed the rest. Russia looking good and moving the ball about really well but suspect it may be different against a top team.

    Some thoughts on day 1:

》Greece and Poland both OK. Either could progress to the next round, but I'd be amazed if they made it past that.
》Dimitris Salpigidis looks like Phil Collins.
》What a poor penalty, no wonder that got saved.
》When the football flower comes up between scenes and there's a close-up of someone on the screen, it looks like they are in The Residents with their big eye-heads.
》Russia looked unstoppable going forward. Their passing and movement were excellent. Arshavin in particular looked quality. If Kerzakhov hadn't been so profligate, they could have ended up with a hatful.
》I thought the Municipal Stadium in Wroclaw looked massive and was very surprised to read that its capacity is only 43k. I guess three years in League 1 have given me a distorted perception of what “massive” is.
》With my poor hearing, I could hardly understand a word that either Keane or Viera said. Both great footballers in their day, but that shouldn't be enough to give them the junket. Clear enunciation has surely got to be quality number 1 when looking to employ a tv presenter. By comparison Mr Mogadon Southgate was (relatively) welcome. Have ITV come up with the worst panel of pundits ever?
》The Guardian has some great match pictures. You can check them out here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/gallery/2012/jun/08/euro-2012-russia-czech-republic-pictures?newsfeed=true#/?picture=391330347&index=1

This man clearly has a phallus for a nose! Surprised the Guardian used it

Adebayor was terrible at the World Cup - mumbled really fast.

    Day 2 thoughts:

》Every tournament has to have a "Group of Death". It's something to do with the consistent lack of imagination of the press and media. This year, Group B has been dubbed "The Group of Death".
》So far Group B hasn't really lived up to its nickname. It's more the Group of Coma than the Group of death.
》Two ex-Addicks in one side! Who'd have thought it?
》Chronic shooting problems for the Dutch.
》Dennis Rommerdahl showed more passion when he was subbed, than he did in three years at Charlton.
》Yesterday I slated ITV's pundits. Well I have to say, I think that the BBC have got the mix just about right. One dour Northerner, one chirpy Cockney and one urbane Dutchman all led by Britain's favourite crisp-salesman; perfect.
》The Beeb have got it badly wrong at the stadium though. Mowbray is passable, but the clown Lawrenson either prattles on about nothing or gives us insights from the Big Book of Coaching for Infant School Children. Pitchside they have Shearer and the silly teenage ponce kid. It's just awful.
》I've drawn Ronaldo in a highest-scorer sweepstake, so tonight was the first time in my life I've wanted him to score. It felt really weird.
》Joachim Loew no longer looks like Johnny Marr.
》I'm sure that Raul Meireles has a five pound note tattooed up his arm complete with a smiling portrait of Good Queen Liz.
》If ever a goal rescued a game, it was this one. At least the final 20 minutes were ok.

Not a bad disguise but you can still tell it's Platini.

This was the original design for ronald mcdonald! Everything went well until the infamous 'mcmuffin incident of 69'.
  • Joachim Low is still picking his nose. I saw him pick and roll one at The World Cup & he was still at it last night. Disgusting, can't someone tell him to stop please !
  • How Low can you get?
  • Picked that one out well Stig.
  • They reckon Downing will start tomorrow, kill me now. I find it unbelievable that he got picked ahead of Adam Johnson.
  • The thing for me so far, has been how crisp the passing has been in midfield from the teams who are at the top end of the Euros. Something I don't think England have
  • Look where it got the Dutch with their passing game! What we lack in our passing game we make up for with pace in players like Walcott, Wellback and Young and we play a more direct style of football compared to teams like Spain and Holland.
  • I've decided I agree completely Stig about Vieira - useless. Watch how many times he doesn't know a player's name, including his own country's left back! "You know, the one at United?" Martinez had to tell him it was Evra.

He did not know the name of Di Natalie's club either or the Spanish defender who played him onside for the goal. Can't say he's been impressed by Viera's punditry.

  • There hasn't been a worldy goal yet, although there have been some sweetly hit shots that have either been straight at the keeper or just wide. Expect there to be one sooner or later.

Couldn't give a flying about Ireland and I cannot fathom why any tru Englishman wants them to do well

    Come on England

    Both out in group stages

Modric seems to be lining them up, could come in this game
  • Anyone else notice that McDonalds are proud sponsors of the player escorts? Hope they've got an older one lined up for Rooney!

Exactly - "He scored 23 goals for... erm... his club"! Marinez was very good though - knew his stuff and was pointing out all the right things. Strachan is poor too, just goes for the cheap laugh now people have liked him for being 'a character'.

Yes, couldn't help but think they should use that to help market some McTarts.
