Be interesting to see what we get for Solly if he does go because whatever Stevens is worth Solly has to be worth double
No necessarily. I'm not Stephens biggest fan but, the fact is, cultured passing midfielders are in shorter supply than solid and determined right backs. That's not to belittle Solly's excellent talents, it's just a fact of supply and demand economics that Stephens could be considered a more, or at lest similarly, valuable asset. It's one of the reasons why goalscorers always demand such a high price tag.
I don't think a player like Solly will ever get bids of 3/4 million from a Premiership club at this moment in time.
Two perceived prerequisites to play in that division are: 1) You need to be quick 2) You need to have stature
On the surface, its hard to see any manager convincing their chairmen to bid millions for a right back who, as great as he is, has neither of those two traits.

I only saw him 3 times last season, and I think he has both.

I'm not saying he doesn't have them, but on the surface I don't see many Premiership chairmen being convinced by their manager who is asking for a 5 foot 6 right back who doesn't have blistering pace to sure up the defense. At least not for millions of pounds.
You guys creaming your pants about how much money we might get by selling players. Money does not win matches, players do. Did you see Southampton or Norwich the season before, flogging off their best players just before the window? Did you see us doing it last season? No, we had a team building plan, we fulfilled it largely before the season started, and then we went about winning games. If Solly, Stephens or Hamer leave now, then that is a very bad sign about the state of our club. Do not kid yourselves otherwise.

Agreed. The likes of 1.5 million, contrary to popular belief, doesn't go very far in this industry. Especially when you only have a couple of days to use it.

It does if you make it. How much was Kermogant again?

Yes everyone we must remember never to try look on the bright side in a bad situation.

yep, people said the exact same thing when we sold Reid for £4million "we can buy better players". It won't happen, I'd rather have Stephens and Solly than anyone else.
thats the thing we wont have it to use it will go to paying the dinner ladies and the leccy
We dont know for sure and any rumours about the state of the club are just that.
Not saying I dont think you are right. It is just that nobody knows anything.
I agree that IF we took in a couple of million on outgoing, and didnt replace (and when I say replace I mean Stephen Quinn not DNG) the it doesnt look great.

I see what you are saying Prague ,but we are in a different league now.Our signings last season were very much mostly league one players. It's very easy to do business early at that level. We are now part of a completely different animal. To improve the side now we would be looking at players already in the championship and possibly the prem,as are every other club in this league. And that's the problem. Transfers at this level are largely dictated by movements in the premier league first. And as we can see by seasons past they notoriously like to leave things late before making their moves. Leaving the rest of us scrambling around at the very last minute to get deals done.
There is as much chance of us turning down £1.5M for Stephens as there is of us buying a No2 keeper for £500K...papers and weblinks making up ballsh*t.

It might be a bad sign PragueAddick, but surely if we were in that bad a state then we would have sold somebody by now and snapped the hands off of anyone who was coming in with 1million+ plus for players.

That may be true, and I hope it is. However TJ is a property dealer, and also by all accounts is very proud of his hardball negotiating "skills". I did use the word "if" and so far, it hasn't happened.

and don't you think if we needed to sell them, it's a risk to have them play the 1st 3 games.

Yes, with each of those two games my hopes rose. Again, I hope it is not just because somebody enjoys high levels of risk.

Well I think that's my point....
Don't think anyone has said they are happy we are selling them, just stating that if we are going to sell it seems we are going to get a decent amount of money in, which is some consolation at least. Don't see what's offensive in saying that.
You've been calling for people to wise up to the perilous financial state of the club and then when people say they are willing to accept the sale of a couple of our better players if it's necessary to help safeguard the club's future you get your knickers in twist in about that.
What do you expect people to do? Form an angry mob and congregate around the statue of Sam Bartram with pitchforks and burning torches?

theres been a fair few posts along the lines of.... 'for that money il drive him there myself'

I expect the current board to be as smart as the one that took us from near bankruptcy to near a Europe place; throughout that time it made sure, either formally or informally, that fans were well informed about the finances, so that we have realistic expectations about what we can achieve and what might need to happen. When Bowyer and Mills were sold, I and many others understood exactly why, and when Parker was sold I understood that every board member did everything possible to prevent it happening. That is what I have been asking for. To be given an insight into how bad things are, when after all, things are bad at many other Champ clubs. To be fair, some informal channels have been kept open, but if -IF - these sales come to pass then it will mean that information may not have been accurate.
I can live with selling Stephens if that is the only one, and we get 1.5m for him. Although the timing is hardly ideal, and we will suffer for it. But if you add to that either Solly or Hamer, sorry that is a fire sale as Rothko rightly described it. And it does not matter how much money we get in, because we won't be able to spend it. We will plummet down the table and before you know it people will be muttering about the manager being under pressure.
If you want a manager to manage effectively, do not undermine his plans at the last minute for financial reasons which could have been identified several months earlier. If you are in business, you know that is true of any business.
