The best clue has to be the Mungo Jerry/Bonzo's/Manfred Mann (presumably from their Doo Wah Diddy period), and the bass.
oakster you have been a bit unclear about the bass, suggesting it could even be a deep woodwind sound, even something with a sense of humour like a bass bassoon. can you tell us a bit more about this bass sound?

Seth - a little like the single fuzzy bass note that repeats throughout this....

but it's not a country type song, more a whimsical British summer of love groover.....
  • Shag (jonathan king) loop-di-love ??
  • Come on Eileen: the Dexys

Any song by the Wurzles (with or without Adge)

and finally, and most appropriate for this thread:

You're Driving Me Crazy: The Temperance Seven.
  • American but Secret Agent Man - Johnny Rivers
  • maybe the lovin spoonful?

I think some of those bands would have better names if they combined. What about: Twirl Skip; Pavement Blossom; Pretty Thing's Cupid; Clock Kaleidoscope; Lovetime Box; Oz the Zoblies; Attack Family Tree; Trip Rubble Nuggets.

yes - in this vein....& Six-Bag, yes that kind of deep distorted bass......but like I have said I am at the stage now where I am not sure anymore - keep the guesses going though

  • Yesterday Man - Chris Andrews ?
  • I can hear the grass grow.
  • I HAVE FOUND IT!!!!!! Thanks to Youtube & a playlist on there...

Now my description was pretty accurate, kind of a Mungo Jerry vibe but the song pre-dates that...definitely that ships horn sound throughout, not as often as I thought. It was No.1 in Canada & the UK - the singer had 3 No. 1 hits...he is still alive.

    Any more guesses....

A clue - wasn't surprised it was overlooked with what was going on at the time.
