  • Sorry to add to the general mood of negativity but I was having a beer with a bunch of Belgians tonight and they really dont rate our new Manager (Jose). They told me that apart from a brief spell at Standard he has never managed a top league club and will be in way over his head in the English Championship.

Most of the players we've inherited from the network seem in over their heads, wouldn't surprise me if it's the same with the coach.

I think Roland is biting off more than he can chew (huh)

These new players are technically better than our other hard working players. The youngsters coming through can also pass the ball well. With a new style from Riga it could be exciting football.

I love Powell but I haven't enjoyed the football I've witnessed since half way through the League 1 winning season.

I wish him all the best and he will definitely get a job easily. He will have learnt from his mistakes and I'm sure will become a successful manager elsewhere.
  • Actually f*** it... I'm distraught.

    Genuinely gutted, I loved Powelly.

José Riga clearly no more than a puppet for the Belgian, someone for the fans to shout at and to take the heat. I wonder what reception he will get as he walks out to take Chris' place in the dugout tomorrow?

what do you think we should do? boo him? throw rotten eggs at him? invade the pitch and put his lights out? Jesus. We should give him our wholehearted support. He is now our Manager. Whatever the circumstances I'm sure he wants to be a success. He didn't sack CP. Get behind him. If you can't then perhaps you should stay at home.

He may not have sacked powell but he was negotiating the job while powell was still officially still our manager.....classy

Never heard of him, but my starting position is that he is an utterly useless 'see you next tuesday', and it will remain so unless he can persuade me inch by inch moment by moment otherwise.
I will certainly not support him because I am loyal to Charlton, he will have to prove himself every moment of every day otherwise I will be heaping the vitriol on him at every match I attend and at every opportunity.
OK Roland, first challenge starting tomorrow is to win every remaining match this season, and even then you're still the carpetbagger who has foreclosed the farm, and is standing there grinning and chewing your cigar whilst our sad belongings are loaded up on a cart.
Nice to meet you Jose Riga, just want to start off by saying I don't know you, but I hate you.

Seth, you say you're loyal to Charlton but won't support the new guy.. Isn't that a contradiction? It's not his fault and he should be given a chance. Today has been a shock but, we are bottom with the fewest goals... It was a day that was always coming.
Seth is supporting the new guy like you and your cronies on the forum that must not be named supported Chris Powell.

You all say you're loyal to Charlton but never supported Chris Powell.

    How do you reconcile that?
How do you know I never supported Chris Powell? Were you at the Wendies on the Monday? I was there cheering him on. The club, today, made a decision. In the end, you support the club and not it's employees.

Riga doesn't let the grass grow, does he?
    2008 technical director RCS Vise,
mid 2011 he left for head coach, Liege,
2012 he left for l'Aspire Academy, Qatar (not sacked by RD; he got an offer he couldn't refuse),
2013 he left for youth coach, AC Milan,
2014 he left for head coach, some club in Sarf London.

That's 4 jobs in 32 months and not sacked once. It looks like less a question of how long he'll last with us, as of how long we'll last with him.
  • And where is the evidence the Riga is going to pick all the Liege players? Let's wait and see tomorrow's line up.

If the comedy keeper starts tomorrow, we'll know all we'll need to know about Mr Riga.

Chrissy Powell's Red and White Army. End of.
  • LAAATTIIVVAAA,!!
  • i can hear it now from cafc fans in upper north! your just a puppet for roland puppet for rolllaannd!!! lets support him yea!

  • I'm still hacked off at missing a good opportunity at winning the FA cup, or at least getting a first semi (ooh er) since '47. Of all the times to be causing unrest...... what a tit!

He'll find himself in trouble very quickly if he doesn't!
  • Following one of our very few, good wins a couple of months ago CP said "we played as if the shackles had been taken off". I thought at the time, what shackles?? Who is imposing the shackles?
But to me that seemed to be how the team had been playing for most of the season. We will soon see whether these players are good enough to play open attacking football. I think they are better than they have been showing of late. Reza, with a little more luck could have had three goals already. I also fail to see why anyone, RD or Riga, would want to play a goalkeeper who is totally useless. They might as well just concede the points and not bother playing. It makes no sense. If Thuram is hopeless, Riga will either not start with him, or will soon drop him. Yes man, or no yes man, no manager would start a game with a useless goalkeeper.
As things now stand, we have to support what is left of Charlton. Hamer, Wiggins, Solly, Morrison, Cort, Wood, Hughes, Jacko, Poyet, Cousins, Harriot etc : they are all our lads and deserve our support no matter who is coaching them. Let's at least get fully behind them and see where it takes us. Who knows, they may actually end up enjoying playing a new style of football. They may improve their skills and go on to be better players. Things were certainly going very stale recently, I'm sure the majority of fans would agree with that.

I have absolutely nothing against Riga. Nothing that's happening or gone on is his fault, he's just a bloke taking a job that he's been offered. But if it turns out his job is to just play players given to him on loan from RD's franchises and were used for RD's and other clubs benefit, then I don't care if he's a great bloke, a great coach and the team win every game because that shows he's happy just to be a quiet little puppet and I have no respect that, on top of the fact that to me the team won't be Charlton.

I understand people saying "I support Charlton no matter what etc etc..." But it then comes down to what you're happy to consider to still be "Charlton". I went continuously during the Selhurst days because despite what was going on we were still "Charlton" in my eyes whilst others decided they wouldn't attend. An issue like that and this can only ever come down to personal acceptance and choices. But I wonder how many of the fans saying "no matter what" were also taking the piss out of last seasons Watford team and quite rightly pointing out that they weren't actually a Watford team? And I don't think they were being "used" as there's fears we might be. Or who berate MK for their (lack of) real identity?

If however it turns out he's is own man and we're not just some sort of network feeder club for others benefit then my full support will continue. Only time can and will tell.
I was actually quite positive about the RD takeover and in principle don't really have a problem with being part of a network. I'm angry that Powell's been sacked but that's an emotional thing that with time I'll get over and has no bearing on the new manager. However to me the support for the situation comes which huge caveats, mainly that we are still our own club with our own identity and that decisions that are made are for our own benefit. I understand that what people are going to be happy to accept as identity differs.

But some of the "no matter what" side need to understand that relative success and stability is only part of it for me, and I suspect some others. Identity is also very important and that is a situation we are worried about and will make decisions accordingly as the situation hopefully becomes clearer.

Good post, I have my sincere doubts about Riga - I can't see how in any other way at all that he is anything more than a proxy for Douche to play out his football manager hobby. It also sticks in the craw that some of the "no matter what brigade" - who are now oh so holier than thou - have been rabid in their criticism of Powell & anything but supportive of his team for the last few months....
  • The thing is I don't think he's been brought in to make some big push to stay up. If that we're the case we'd be bringing in player reinforcements too. He's here for the Euro network master plan. I did not want Powell to go but could understand if we brought in someone experienced in this league with a record of motivating players to perform. This guy seems like a technical coach. Is that what we need to get out of this? Maybe, but bear in mind from now till the end of the season our players won't be on the training ground much what with games every 3.5 days! I hope it works and wish him luck.
  • Ardarevic & Reza will definitely start tonight, which in my opinion they should be anyway. Nego maybe if he wants to push LW further forward. The question is the Goalie. If HE plays that will tell you everything, but let's not forget one thing. Thuram is a 24 year old in a different country adapting to change. Getting on the kids back from the off will not help our plight one single bit. Whether we like what's going on or not we have got to stay in this division. We can all reassess things in the Summer.
  • Would be interested to know how long a contract has been given to Jose (has he actually signed one yet?). Is it a 3 year one or only 6 months??
  • Here till the end of the season I heard.

Very permanent then!! All the players get to know him, then off he goes and off the players go. On loan head coach. Good stuff. I want security and ambition at my football club, there's no security and there's certainly no ambition (looking past this season).
  • PL54 said:

BTW, is he a Jose or a Hose?

Depends if he is Spanish or Portuguese

    He's Belgian.
Well it is going to be with a H sound or J sound and that traditionally depends which part of Iberia you are from

Until the next guy comes along and is given three or four years contract. All this short term reactionary crap from people I believed far more level headed is surprising to me and a little depressing. I understand passions riding high but I firmly believe there are going to be a few people on here with some large helpings of humble pie to eat up - and it's not the fans seeing potential positives.
  • I thought the short term reactionary crap you were talking about Newbie was the appointment of Jose Riga who is only caretaker head coach for 3 months until the coach that RD wants all along arrives. That’s not it is it ?

No, it's assuming that what may or may not even be true (please show me evidence that it is only three months he's signed up for) is going to be the only way things are run for the foreseeable future and that ruining the club is not only a side effect of RD's scheme, it is in fact the desired outcome. If Riga is indeed only here for three months, then clearly he is not some sort of quiescent puppet to be tugged around, there is another target in mind to be the long term manager - RD is therefore looking ahead. If it is false and Riga is here for a longer term, then he is again part of a plan, a different plan admittedly but again RD is looking to the future.

If RD does have another Head Coach in mind, they must be better qualified or higher thought of than Riga, or he would have been given three or four years right off the bat. And if there IS a better manager/coach en route come the season's end, then I for one would take that as proof that RD has bigger and better plans in mind than spending 14 million quid on a glorified academy for Liege.

It has been a tough few days, no one can doubt that. But a bunch of internet sages reading metaphorical tea leaves and gazing into their computerised crystal balls aside, no-one KNOWS what will happen in the future. So let's not start slashing wrists and threading nooses for our own necks just yet, hey.

  • I would be interested to know the timescale he's been given considering (I assume) he still had a role at Milan. So would he have left for a post that lasted just 3 months or is it a 'Show me what you can do in that time and we'll talk further'.

  • Does anyone else find it a bit strange that there's not been any press conference by the club regarding Jose Riga? I know he was only appointed yesterday, but I would expect at least a brief interview/ introduction on CAFC Player, but nothing................................

Sadly I don't find it strange at all. Just expected.
  • CP's team beat Hudds 0-1. Anything less than this and the guys a twonk.
  • The club's website describes him as the 23rd permanent manager of the club - does 3 months qualify as "permanent"? At this crazy time, who knows....?
