  • I would welcome any of the Standard Liege posters who come on here for their view on Riga. Was he the popular manager that caused them to revolt after being let go?

    No he wasn't.

    Agree Large.

Maybe he'll turn out to be the tactical geniuses some said we need? Or play attractive attacking football?

No idea how this will turn out but seems many (especially on Twitter) have already written him off as a yes man and decided we'll be nothing more than a feeder club in League 2. If that's the case RD should have saved his money and bought a much smaller club.

Exactly my thoughts. RD isn't going to just let us rot in the lower leagues, he paid good money for the club.
Sorry but I think Mr Roland got a real bargain.

If you include the £4 million (apparent) discount for relegation, £1 million (ish) for the three player sales, the book value of Solly, Cousins, Poyet and Wiggins plus any core real-estate value of the Valley and I would say he is already quids in. The only thing he must avoid at all costs is spending money.

Where we are in the League is entirely irrelevant to him as long as the academy produces talent for Standard Liege or revenue from other transfers.

Mr Riga has no relevant qualification for this job other than being a. Belgian and b. weak enough to allow Mr Roland pick the team. I think we can assume he is also cheap.

Smell the coffee fellas, we might as well be supporting Ostende Under 11's .

  • Whens the press conference? Roland loves a media outing to outline his vision.

Does he know about the other Championship teams? If not even more cluelessness. Feel sick

WHO GIVES A FLYING FUCK ABOUT OTHER CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS?! Is the main credential for a Charlton manager to have read the 'The History Of Burnley F.C., by A. Localhistorian'? How much did Powell really know about the however many other League One teams when he came in? Had he that much experience of playing in a cloggers' league? No. I don't give a toss whether the new guy has encyclopaedic knowledge of all 92 clubs as long as he does a good job at one club - Charlton Athletic. Pochettino didn't even SPEAK English when he came to Southampton and that didn't turn out too shabby.
Do you really not understand that with such limited resources - and time - some knowledge of opposing players, bosses, strengths and weaknesses might just help a little? As might a proven ability to get the best out of moderate players who also understand what they're up against. I genuinely wish him well but have to doubt his suitability in our current predicament.

I do understand your point - I just totally disagree with it. We knew about Sheffield United - they beat us quite convincingly. We did research on the likes of Doncaster and Birmingham, they beat us too. Chris Powell must know more about Leicester than anyone not a current staff member there - they beat us. Knowledge is not power. Coming in with no preconceptions and no apprehension could be the way forward. Enough with trying to counter the other teams' tactics - at least try imposing our own. It cannot work out any worse.
Be interesting to see if the current squad are capable of this fresh new approach. I do acknowledge that eg vs Sheffield Utd. we should've been more positive in taking our game to them, but knowledge of the opposition doesn't necessarily equate to fear of them. Knowledge of QPR certainly played a part in overcoming their strengths and weaknesses. If JR can impose a successful breed of football that frees the players from their shackles by not knowing much about their opponents I'll enjoy it as much as you. Fingers crossed...

Where does the £xm per year he would lose operating us in League One factor into your equation?

All this science malarky may not work on a freezing cold Tuesday night, pissing it down, up in Carlisle with 2 blades of grass on the pitch.. It's the wrong league for all this. And if he keeps us up, good luck to him applying his tactics in such a short space of time. And with the players we have.

Playing good quality passing football will work on a cold or hot Tuesday night anywhere. Do you not think it gets a bit nippy in Belgium or Denmark or wherever. As for the players I doubt many of our current players will be here next season regardless of division.

Players seemed to be enjoying training on the clip sky sports news just showed

In fairness if you're a footballer and a new guy comes in and says we're going to play passing football instead of lumping it to Church then you might have a smile on your face too
That would be a great theory if it wasn't Dyer and Matthew who took the training, you know Powell's assistants.

Maybe it was gallows humour, maybe they were laughing about which club they would follow Powell to and who would get a call, maybe they all thought it was funny that so many of us travelled up to Sheffield or maybe they all hated Powell and are pleased he is gone. OR maybe they were laughing at a joke told by Danny Green?

One clip on Sky really is meaningless as a gauge of how the players feel about CP or JR.

  • As a rule, I don't post on threads without reading everything that's been written on them, but I'm doing so today, as it's just too depressing to trawl through it all.

I genuinely believed we would stay up this season, but now I'm fairly sure we'll go down. With 16 games remaining, I don't see how a head coach with no experience of English football (and probably little knowledge of our players) is going to pull us out of a tight Championship relegation fight. I'm not convinced that the players will have sufficient time to adapt effectively to new methods and ideas, and I'm fairly certain that morale will have taken a serious hit among a group of tight-knit players who were fiercely loyal to their previous manager.

My season ticket renewal form arrived today, which seems like a sick joke. Of course, I will renew for next season, and I'll be at The Valley tomorrow cheering on my team. I support Charlton, not any one manager or any one player. It's just a shame that Charlton feels a little less Charlton this evening.
  • Now we know why he has been appointed. He hypnotised RD.

José Riga clearly no more than a puppet for the Belgian, someone for the fans to shout at and to take the heat. I wonder what reception he will get as he walks out to take Chris' place in the dugout tomorrow?

what do you think we should do? boo him? throw rotten eggs at him? invade the pitch and put his lights out? Jesus. We should give him our wholehearted support. He is now our Manager. Whatever the circumstances I'm sure he wants to be a success. He didn't sack CP. Get behind him. If you can't then perhaps you should stay at home.

100% this. Get behind the team and new manager. I would go further and say to those that don't want to support CAFC 100% - we are better off without you.

Totally agree with your post Gillis.
Chris Powell took a large lump of Charlton with him as he drove away from the training ground today.

Why should I stay at home after I've bought my season ticket?
We ought to behave within the law, and the stadium rules, but why on earth should I automatically get behind him? Out of respect for his position?
You're allowed to shout loudly at football matches 'you know what you've gotta do, lets get behind the boys and make some noise'. We are officially encouraged to make a noise, if that noise is cosmic vituperation then they have brought it on themselves.
I will get behind him if he delivers result after result, and then stands up to Roland as Chris Powell appears to have done.

No that was Rednic, the Romanian who was sacked last May and was quoted as saying Duchatelet needed a “puppet and not a coach"

Now we are getting the guy that Standard Liege fans rioted after being sacked by RD, what's the betting that Powell next turns up at Upjest or Alcorcon?!! ;-)

    We, the fans, decide that.

Welcome Jose Riga, you'd best be ready to be show yourself as fighting tooth and nail to keep the Addicks up.

Acceptance of relegation no matter how mathmatically possible to stay up it is would be suicide here.

Yeah right lol. Should be Charlton Apathetic. We accept everything!

  • its the shock that some seem to have with the sacking and the non manager role now at cafc

    that amazes me the most

this has and was coming since jan

This, you could see it coming a mile off.
