The club's website describes him as the 23rd permanent manager of the club - does 3 months qualify as "permanent"? At this crazy time, who knows....?

The club also didn't confirm the length of his contract.
  • According to sky sports news the players were impressed with what Riga had to say yesterday .
  • First time I've posted on the saga and I have to say good luck to Riga - god knows he'll need it.

Having looked at all the threads the last two days I can't believe that amidst all the chaos NOBODY stuck the picture of Appleton up- must be that we were all in so much shock!

was it 'im sorry, I did not know he had not been told which is why I arrived in my charlton gear before he had left'?

    just asking.

  • Yeah, like they're gonna come out and say "that bloke's a clueless knob". .........................

CP's team beat Hudds 0-1. Anything less than this and the guys a twonk.

CP teams lost 3-2 in the Capital One Cup and 2-1 in the league so will that still make Riga a twonk?

    Yup. We are at home.

Don't you remember the press conference when they all told us powell gets to pick the team.

We should always believe what they say.

    What ?
  • In reality players are only concerned with themselves as individuals, and will be thinking of their own interests, whether that's impressing the new gaffer or trying to find a new club...

The only direct quote from a player I have read about so far is that Bradley Pritchard said Jose spoke good English. I reckon that is what impressed the players don't you?

I have not seen Sky Sports news so maybe it is a developing story with other attributable quotes.

  • So you really believe NO football players have any understanding of respect, friendship or loyalty? If so, that's pretty harsh.

  • Can Jose speak English?
  • Does anyone else find it a bit strange that there's not been any press conference by the club regarding Jose Riga? I know he was only appointed yesterday, but I would expect at least a brief interview/ introduction on CAFC Player, but nothing................................

I think if most of us were honest the announcement hardly capitulated excitement amongst the terraces.

There was an interview with a Belgian journo who just said he's got a good rep for promoting teams from the lower leagues and then the sky sports presenter said the players were impressed with what Riga had to say yesterday , so who knows he might not be the devil.

I don't know much about Jose Riga. 'Impressed' can be interpreted any way you like. The specific quote (on the U21 thread) is that Bradley Pritchard says he speaks good English, that I believe is all we know so far about what he said. Sky Sports were outside the gate I believe, so have they evidence of interviewing players as they left the training ground? I would be interested in seeing that if it exists. Reporting that the players were impressed could easily mean that they were impressed with his English.
On a day when players arrived at training to suddenly learn about Chris Powell, perhaps bewildered by events, having to say their goodbyes to Chris, contemplating what it all means for them, preparing for a game, doing training whilst being watched by two strangers.
I would say they would have been having to take a hell of a lot in. If they had to listen to the new guy it is far more likely that being impressed would go about as far as considering his English skills, rather than impressed by his inspirational treatise on how inverting the pyramid, with a few canny tweaks, was going to get them to beat Huddersfield Town the following day.

  • Sounds like he'll be off in the summer. From Astrit:

“His job is to keep us up. He doesn't have a season, he has 12 games so he just wants to give us belief."
  • doesn't read like that to me. Reads that we have 12 games left and his job is to keep us up.

  • I read it as he does not have the luxury of an entire season, rather then he is only in the job for another 12 games, that may be the case but that does not confirm it IMO.
  • Can't see him sticking around to be honest, this man hasn't tied down a long term job in a long time, we have no news of a signed contract. Stop-in head coach imo
  • I agree with AA that Jose Rigo is a caretaker coach until the end of the season. He will be making way for another coach and has some other role within the Charlton Duchatelet enterprise. I think it will be for some one who wants to play passing football in a similar fashion that will hopefully links up the way the Academy and Under 21s play to how the first team plays.

Astrid though, I didn't get the feeling that I should get too attached to that player. I guess a lot hinges on what league Charlton are in. That would include the supporters as well as players and management. It is a big 2 months for the club.
