The other thing to note is that there is quite a few good quality african players who seemed to provide the creative spark for quite a few teams. It would not surprise me to see a couple of these at Charlton in the close season.
This! I have posted before on this site that one simply needs to look at liege website or google "standard liege africa" to get a whole load of stories and quotes. Whether it is Riga or someone else as head coach we need a couple of decent strikers at Charlton next season and perhaps one of them will be African as it seems logical we follow the same pattern for player recruitment. Perhaps they come direct or maybe from Liege as I understand that it is easier to obtain a work permit in Belgium.

WIth Liege and Roland, before I had an opinion that elevated Liege similar to Liege being stronger than Charlton, Liege akin to a Premiership club. Charlton supporters should watch a couple of Belgium games to fully understand that Belgium football and the Championship are very comparable. Championship football is definitely faster and more competitive. The fact of this should set Charlton supporters thinking about being a feeder club, as with contracts renewed, the midfield retained and decent strikers, Charlton would be stronger than Liege.
I think we're probably 3 or 4 players short at least from being stronger than Liege but you're right about the leagues being fairly comparable.
A couple of seasons ago in Europe, Birmingham played Club Brugge who are currently 2nd in Belgium and they drew at home and won in Bruges. This season Wigan drew away but lost at home to Zulte Waregem who are 4th in belgium.
So there's not a great deal of difference between the 2 leagues.

Wasn't sure whether to buy this slightly derogatory view of the Belgian league, but those two examples are very good rational benchmarks.
Before we get too carried away with the idea that RD will turn his attention to our potential, it's worth thinking of an alternative scenario in his head. He loves figures, stats. Those stats may tell him that you can build a UCL qualifying team relatively cheaply in Belgium, and indeed in Hungary, because the wage costs of such winning teams in this divisions will be lower, because of the much lower standard. I am not saying that this is what he does think, but it is just as plausible as the idea that he has his eyes firmly set on the vastly increased revenue from getting Charlton into the FAPL. That is why we should seek to understand why he has bought all the clubs, not just Standard.

Hmmm, interesting concept - never thought of it that way - so effectively, SL could become a feeder club for us should we get close to the PL?

Well I would hesitate to say that. I think it is more likely that Alcorcon and Jena are the feeder clubs to Standard and Charlton. Ujpest, I really don't know. On the one hand, it wouldn't take much money to get Ujpest into at least the Europa League, on the other hand Ujpest get the same sort of gates as Jena - 2,000.
I reckon that @Mundell Fleming calls it right. Roland hasn't quite decided, and is keeping his options open.
As an aside, very interesting in Germany. HSV are the only team present in Bundesliga1 since it started 50 years ago, and they have a ticker on their homepage to this effect. They are playing off against #3 in Bundesliga2. First leg tonight in Hamburg 57K sell-out. On 56 mins 0-0. One very proud record hangs in the balance. 2nd leg in Furth on Sunday.
If you want that type of info you should try and strike an accord with the respective football manager researchers - they have access to stuff you'd be surprised about

Could you clarify? Whom were you replying to, and what kind of info?
