  • Time to forget about KP and Trott and look to the future, we have made our decision so reversing it now would be even more ridiculous.

I think Cook is an appalling Captain (albeit one with some good results in the past) he is tactically static and lacks the ability to inspire people as Hussain and Vaughan used to do.

Put Cook back as a pure opening batsman and let him re-discover his form and then make Broad the Skipper with Bell as Vice Captain, its not ideal but better than where we are at the moment.

The whole KP thing is a sideshow which we have seen enough of already.

Agreed. That's exactly what I'd like them to do.
(Early lunch taken, due to the rain.)

This. Totally. Cook has no skills to inspire people. I was impressed with Broads captaincy when he was skipper in one-dayers - imagine what the likes of Broad and Anderson must think when he's setting the fields that he does.
  • Maybe we could have a Loan Captain?! - my vote would be for Warney - says a lot of sense that bloke.
  • The only downside about Broad being captain is that he would quickly waste both reviews on his own bowling !

I understand what you are saying but Broad (touted on here and elsewhere as a possible successor as Skipper) and Anderson are both senior bowlers and will have had a say in the fields that were set.

Cook is often reactive rather than proactive as a Skipper and that fault is highlighted when he is also not performing with the bat. That said it is unfair to blame him for a bad day at the Office for both Anderson and Broad who did not bowl in the right areas for far too long.

The irony is that Anderson achieved his best figures in a test match innings at Headingley! I still think his bowling was at best indifferent though yesterday.

Yes, granted for the first paragraph - however, if Cook is feeling under pressure, he may well be trying to assert himself as a captain, and in doing so, dictating field placement for the 2 , however senior they may be.

You have to admit though, his general captaincy skills leave an awful lot to be desired.

  • i think cook has to go
  • Why bother with captain?

Have a coach on the balcony who signals the bowling changes and let the bowlers set their own fields.

Why not have a spin the bottle after every over to see who's going to bowl next, and then just tell everyone to spread out a bit.

  • 9 down with a minimum 20 overs left.

I don't think he should be captain but I def think KP should be back in the team & Trott needs to be asked back too. I also think the Root should play at 3 and Compton should also be brought back......as well as Monty. Too many novices in the team.

But its not the 'novices' who have underperformed - both Robson and Ballance have scored big centuries and Plunkett (ok, not that 'new', but you know what i mean) has taken a Michelle - its the likes of Cook,Bell,Broad and Anderson who have.
Moeen Ali's been brilliant today. The way the "novices" have played should put others to shame. More of them please. None of the arrogant complacency of some of the old guard.
Great century for Moeen Ali....and no OTT celebration. Top player.
  • Utter heartbreaker.
  • Gutted
  • I tell you who I would give it to. Joe Root - has loads of Yorkshire grit and has a decent start to his England career.

There aren't any obvious candidates and whilst he is still only 23 he isn't much older than David Beckham was when Peter Taylor gave him the job.
  • Fuck off, sport!!

  • Jimmy anderson in tears at the end with athers on the stand.

Gutting to lose, but 2 test matches coming down right to the wire is brilliant stuff. Great effort by both teams, shame its only a 2 test series!
  • Has Cook gone yet?
  • BBQ.

    I mean Cook Out.

  • On the plus side, Moeen Ali looks like he could open the batting, let alone play in the middle order. Looked effortlessly graceful even in defence.
  • Could somebody explain to me why Anderson had to play not particularly fast short pitched deliveries? Surely all he needed to do was step to one side and let the ball sail harmlessly over the stumps.
  • maybe ....but i speak from experience its a lot easier said than done for a number 11 bat ...give him credit he had faced 50 odd balls beforehand ..blame the batsmen for the batting display ..criticise anderson, broad et al for poor bowling but in the proper traditions of the game lets doff our caps to Sri Lanka who played the better cricket and deserved to win
