After some encouraging performances recently in what has looked like an organised unit, we are trying out clueless defender Phil Jones at defensive midfield and well proven by now that he is a striker Wayne Rooney at the top of the diamond. I am intrigued by Walcott upfront but him in the wide right of a 3 with the way we are playing seems pretty much perfect for him.

Israel losing to Belgium, TBH playing again. I can't see him being available for Friday

Why? Gomez and Gudmundsson played tonight, no different to a Saturday game and then again on Tuesday

Now Bulot paying tomorrow worries me

Are you sure Bulot is playing tomorrow? as Gabon played Belarus in a friendly last night.

It is different as we haven't played too many of those games you refer to in the Middle East !

If TBH has been playing 90 mins in each (I presume he has as captain) and considering he won't be home until minimum Wednesday afternoon I don't think he'll be able to play on Friday.

My apologies for some reason I had it in my head their game was tomorrow.

My point still stands about Gudmundsson and Gomez tho .

Neither of those will be at training until tomorrow afternoon at best.

At the end of the day, they are professionals and I don't think playing Tuesday and Friday is going to effect them to much, especially someone like TBH who has been around long enough to manage it now

I think it's the fact that TBH has been around so long that means he won't be able to manage it ! I get that professional players should be able to play three games in 7 days (which is technically what we're asking) but that level of fitness and conditioning assumes they haven't also made two fairly long haul flights during that time. Gomez should be ok, Gudmundsson might struggle and TBH definitely will.

Personally I'd rest Gomez as he has had a few games in quick succession even though he is probably itching to play.

At 17 the boy is still growing and needs to be protected. Curbs was always careful with Parker and Konchesky amongst others and they are still playing relatively successfully well into their thirties.

Agree we need to be careful with him - but that leaves you with Johnson & TBH (presuming you're not considering Bikey) and I think that games against Gareth Bale and Belgium, plus two medium haul international flights will leave someone who's 30+ in a worse condition than a 17 year old who's played two relatively local game against relatively inferior opposition.

I'd play Gomez on Friday and TBH on Tuesday (possibly bringing Bikey in for the Fulham game).

TBH has played two qualifiers, and has to fly back from Israel, whereas JBG only played the second half yesterday, and it was only a friendly as well so I'm sure he exerted himself far less.

TBH has also been playing against the likes of Bale, Benteke, Hazard and Fellaini so probably needs a rest!

Wales have beaten Belgium (ranked #2 in the world) 1-0 tonight.

& Iceland beat Czech Republic 2-1.

Might be worth really trying to get Gudmundsson to sign for at least another two years... Looks like Iceland will be heading to the Euros and with JBG performing on the big stage I'd be surprised if we kept hold of him beyond next summer anyway

(Means we'd at least get another season AND a higher fee maybe)

    Fully deserved as well.

I know we always choke at finals but Germany, France and Spain are probably the only sides I've seen in qualifying and friendlies that are better than us. We get a lot of stick but a few sides are playing well below par.
  • The current countries at the tops of the qualifying groups are bizarre:

    . Iceland
    . Wales
    . Slovakia
    . Poland
    . England
    . Romania
    . Austria
    . Croatia
    . Portugal

I know there are a lot of games left to play (most of those groups are only halfway through), and France aren't involved, but if you were picking the top 9 European countries, I don't suppose many of those would be in the list!

And who are currently in 2nd place... Reckon the players of the majority of top nations are taking it a bit easier this campaign because your only in a bit of trouble if your third in the group.

Reckon because of that you may see a major casualty this qualifying time and it'll be recitified for 2020 because the big nations will buck their ideas up

i.e. Your even seeing some of the smaller nations giving it a proper go (jokes about Scotland standing a chance of qualifying aside)
  • England
    N. Ireland
    Wales
    Scotland/Ireland

Is now a very real possibility to be attending euro 2016

The Icelandic side are so underrated. They always get results against the "bigger" sides and their odds are often very generous.

    Hahahahahahahahaha.

And this is why we build ourselves up for a fall every tournament.

Speaking of Iceland, does every single person there have a last name ending in Son? I know their whole squad today did

Tell me, who is currently playing better football and getting better results in European Qualification at the moment than England?

Björk's surname is Guðmundsdóttir, so no.
    (Females have the suffix "dottir".)

But as a serious answer: Most end in son or dottir, but a few, like Nobel winner Halldór Laxness don't.

In Iceland traditionally boys took their fathers first name and add "son" to the end (and girls "dittor"), rather than have surnames - because it's such a small place they didn't need surnames.

So for instance your surname would be your Dads name + son and your sons name would be xx Rossson.

This is generally stuck to to this day, Gudjohnson himself actually uses the same surname as his dad (who was also a footballer) rather than the traditional naming culture, I don't know why.

No we don't Diz - most people are like you, and expect us to fail, but the odd one like VG who is positive is the one that all the negative people point at and say "ha that's typical", when it isn't really the case at all.

I just keep quiet and live in hope...

If that is the case, then seeding needs to be done on qualifying position, rather than FIFA ranking.

Of course that would come back and bite England on the arse as runaway group winners we would end up with runners up Germany and "squeezed through the play-offs" France in our group...

Wales will be in the top pot for World Cup qualifying now as well. Impressive.
