  • Does anyone know if there's ever been a film based around the Falklands? (Conflict, rather than daily life).

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0134178/

    An Ungentlemanly Act

    This one was very good.
  • 1. Post WW2 film - An Ungentlemanly Act

    2. WW2 film - Angels One Five or The Man who Never Was

    3. Film not involving Brits or Yanks. - Das Boat (sort of not us or the septics)

    4. Pre-WW1 film -The Four Feathers ( the last incarnation with Heath Ledger)

    5. WW1 film- All Quiet On the Western Front (first one)
  • Some really good choices. I don't believe these have been picked yet.

The Third Man (although would be Apocalypse Now every time)

A Matter of Life and Death

The Battle for Algiers/ Land and Freedom

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (often my favourite film of all time)

    La Grande Illusion

Got two of my favs in there Cordoban... Slightly off of kilter and odd ball to your normal war film of the time.

Also a sucker for a more conventional war pic

    The Longest Day
    Battle of Britain

To name just two of the genre.

The James Coburn one Cross of Iron (1977) is worth a mention. I like all the gritty action without the "yeh haw!" shite you get with the modern Yank versions of history. Plus anything from the German side is often more revealing.
  • How about The Pianist for WW2?
  • Some really good choices. I don't believe these have been picked yet.

The Third Man (although would be Apocalypse Now every time)

A Matter of Life and Death

The Battle for Algiers/ Land and Freedom

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (often my favourite film of all time)

    La Grande Illusion

    +1 A wonderful movie.

Would also add being a Kubrick fan

    1. Full Metal Jacket

    5. Paths of Glory

    Cross Of Iron, brilliant

    DEMARCATION

    DEMARCATION
  • How about for a "Home Front" film, Hope and Glory. A masterpiece of a film. Well acted, and according to people i have spoken too, a true reflection of being a kid growing up during the war.
  • Not a huge fan of war films but love these two;

    The Great Escape
    Inglorious Basterds
  • 1). Battle of Algiers.

    2) The Cruel Sea.

    3) Das Boot.

    4) Master and Commander

    5) Paths of Glory.
  • 1 Platoon

    2 Kelly's Heroes

    3 Cross of Iron

    4 Gettysburg

    5 All Quiet...

Donald Sutherland's finest hour (and a half).

Didn't even think about The Third Man in this category - another favourite classic of mine, personally I think Welles is better in this than in Citizen Kane
But is it a war film? Isn't it more of a "the war is over, this peace malarkey is harder than we thought" film?

Great list. I'd forgotten about Land and Freedom

    Colonel Blimp is a classic.

Going to through in The Way Ahead and Canterbury Tale
@Henry Irving is that the Powell/Pressburger one where two men and a woman are wending their way to Canterbury? If so, and call me a Phillistine if you wish, I didn't get it.

It is. It is a bit weird and not sure I get all the allegory. Why does the glueman seem able to grant wishes etc but I like those quirky, very English films made by an Englishman and an Hungarian. Is it meant to be a modern day version of Caucer?

    &

The one where Richard Curtis keeps saying "pork sword calling Danny boy, come in Danny boy"

I'll correct my all-time favourite war film for you: Richard Burton keeps saying Broadsword calling Danny Boy! The film is Where Eagles Dare.
