...and have a better looking treacle0

My girlfriend got this on her Facebook feed via Thai friends. She asked me about it last night. Shows that it went viral worldwide, people perhaps wracking their brains and remembering that we were that plucky little team in the Premier League a few years ago.
I doubt any Thais will be hiring The Valley but good, and original, publicity in my opinion.5 -
I wonder what the University of Greenwich will make of this, especially as one of their advertising boards can be seen very clearly in the humping vine.

As somebody that works in the ad sector, I can confirm that it has been an outstanding piece of digital viral marketing. So far I have seen it on my news feed on FB from as far afield as the US, Japan and Australia. Fair enough that it may not be to everybody's taste, but to those that are most likely to hire the club pitch (25-44 Year Old Males in Full Time Employment), I would suggest that it is right up their alley (excuse the double entendre)!

Exactly nothing to be embarrassed about just a bit of adult themed humour aimed at that demographic

Two ways to look at it - either they'll be morally outraged, or they'll be hugely satisfied with the 5.3 million (and counting) Vine loops of it.C_A_F_C said:I wonder what the University of Greenwich will make of this, especially as one of their advertising boards can be seen very clearly in the humping vine.
In my view hats off to whoever came up with this, absolutely outstanding and very funny. Those that don't like it for whatever reason can rest assured that it won't happen again, they can only get away with this sort of thing once.2 -
Roland is up there with Sugar when its comes to firing.shirty5 said:The sort of marketing advert you would possibly see on "The Apprentice".

Some people crack me up on here. Liven up. I count myself lucky I don't have to have a beer with some of you pre match!
They tried something different and it seems to have worked. Either way, got us publicity. Good publicity.
If you're still embarrassed etc, I suggest you go and do the dirty stuff with your partner, and smile. Life too short amigo.1 -
Uni of Greenwich will be fine. Their students get jiggy all over the campus. They're used to it.3

Surely it's only an 'outstanding piece of digital viral marketing' if it increases revenues for the club either now or in the future? This was the genius of it. No way would it have gone viral internationally or made an appearance on the main BBC site without the "teaser".JiMMy 85 said:I don't think it would've been so bad had they not done the out of context clip, although it obviously worked very well.
How do you think you get a family in the first place?
No wonder the rest of Europe laughs at how prudish we are.1 -
This is where little Addicks come from. Think of it as a training video....4

I find it tacky and embarrassing for the club. Be honest. Did anyone link this to 'pitch hire' opportunity? No. Now that you know that you can hire the pitch, will this stunt result in that happening? No. Therefore the whole episode is just a little sad. There IS such a thing as bad publicity. So unnecessary for a family club. Do something clever next time please.3

How on earth can you say "it clearly won't"?? It's the very start of a promotion about pitch hire in the summer & @Kenny Achampong is quite right about the demographic who hire & who will find the viral amusing.newyorkaddick said:

Because everyone in their target market for pitch hire would ether already know one can hire the pitch or would have found out from the (now started) traditional marketing.TelMc32 said:

Unless you are suggesting people will now be travelling from around he world to take up this amazing opportunity?
I think we need a modern update to the 'those that can do' saying.
Ps - as bizarre as the initial campaign is their decision to clumsily own up to it. Why not just splash the ''Score at the Valley' story and let others put two and two together and congratulate us on how 'clever' it was?0 -
At least when someone asks you who you support and you reply "Charlton", the response will be "oh the team that made the sex video" rather than "you were in the Premier League weren't you? Should never have got rid of Curbishley"17
-
Really naff. So we hire the pitch out a couple more times. The club looks tacky and second rate IMO.
Not that's there any major damage done but it's just all very middled aged dad and a bit desperate.4 -
Disappointed there was no shirt pulling.3
-
Someone I met 5 years ago from America messaged me on Facebook about this he lives in New York so the word is out about Charlton he thought it was great it was on Fox News, I also see a west ham fan and millwall fan talking about it on Facebook saying shall we get a team together to play at the valley so YES it has worked.2

Well at least Chris Powell he got an alternative celebration to swinging on the crossbar tomorrow.
You're getting rode Dyer.1 -
Great thinking outside the box by the club. All the Dads at my son's football training talking about it last night. Well done. My mate was behind it, even better!2
-
All too palace gimmicky for my liking , if we're gonna copy them geeks maybe singing for more than 3 minutes in a match would be better
It is definitely a clever idea
Will it result in more sales , well I shouldn't think it would result in less
And I'm sure it was a cheap thing to produce
For the record scum mate said it was funny and the audience it would be aimed at would like it and palace geek in New York enquired if that was me !

Bet if you hired the pitch and then had a shag in the centre circle you'd get chucked out and/or arrested. Irony at its best.2
-
Well it's certainly got a bigger response than the ad on the big screen a couple of years ago. The one where lift doors open and a huge grinning keith peacock head appears.2

and Up and Down.....Halix said:Personally I find it pathetic, and it certainly doesn't fit comfortably with our reputation as a family club. Perhaps this is an example of Belgian humour but I'm actually embarrased that OUR club has sanctioned this. Are we really that desperate that we need to resort to this kind of stunt just to hire out a pitch? Its sub Carry On and more Confessions Of... Enough of this kind of thing....Down with it! Etc.

I for one am outraged and disappointed with the club. For all the years of service I've put in, I was never asked if I wanted a go of being ridden. Rapidly approaching 50 with a back back, a fit bird on top, doing all the graft would've been nice.
Roland out............7 -
Calm down and just wait till you see some of the "special offer" vouchers in your season ticket book....oh wait, there isn't going to be a season ticket book.tangoflash said:I for one am outraged and disappointed with the club. 5 million people watching is meaningless. People watching in America, Brunei, Brazil or anywhere else overseas is meaningless. They won't be coming to The Valley and they won't be hiring the pitch. I've lost count of the funny videos from clubs around the world that have been posted on Charlton Life, but I can put a very precise figure on the times I've been moved to purchase something from one of those clubs as a result - zero.
What counts is how many Charlton fans see it and how many people in South East England who like football but aren't too attached to other club's see it. From that perspective the fact that @supaclive's dads are talking about it is the real measure of success.9
