A very poor day for the home challenge. Saturday after Saturday we watch Nicholls and Henderson cleaning up the big races and completely dominating the domestic action. Then, come the festival, the Irish bring over the big guns and slaughter the home challenge in most of the important races. I discount the handicaps from this, as we have managed to handicap most of the Irish challenge into submission. Where is it going wrong for the British trainers?
I think what's happened is that the Irish used to solely rely on home produced horses. Then Martin Pipe, Paul Nicholls etc started to buy French breds that were more precocious than their Irish counterparts so the owners attached to the the likes of the Mullins stable decided to do the same - and now they have the pick of both.
In 2004, for example, Mullins sent over 18 horses of which just one was French bred. In 2014 he sent over 37 of which 14 were French breds.
It also helps when you have an owner such as Rich Ricci (quote from two years ago):
Ricci loves raising horses—he and his wife own 40 horses in total—but his true passion is entering them in Irish horse races. When asked about why he prefers to race his horses in Ireland rather than in, say, England where he lives, Ricci responded: “I often get calls from trainers in England wondering why I don’t have horses in training there, considering I’m based in England (actually Kent), but I just love Irish racing. The people are fantastic, the atmosphere is really good and the prize-money is still attractive. My wife and I get a real buzz from it.”
And those horses include, of course, Douvan, Faugheen, Annie Power, Vautour Champagne Fever, Djakadam etc etc.
Marvellous what £100m buys for you isn't it.
I think that is a fair point AA. Overall I think the quality of the domestic NH racing is poor, including many of the big Saturday meetings. Our best horses can end up winning a load of soft races, looking like world-beaters until they have to mix it in better company. Bit like some of our cricketers!
A better time for the bookies, at least for the first part of tomorrow's card, I reckon: Based upon a desperately untrusty nose, I shall be having a few each way dabbles as follows: 1.30 Beast Of Burden 12/1 2.05 Apache Jack 33/1 2.40 Baradari 18/1, Hammersly Lake 18/1, Lac Fontana 20/1
Well my Cheltenham bets today did me no favours laid out £3.00 got £1.39 back. So I did Reading to beat Brighton @17/10 and got £5.40 back for a £2 bet, so ended up £1.79 richer across the day!! Wow!!! Tomorrow my bets will be on here by 10:00 am, still I only do this for a bit of fun, so please don't follow what I do...I haven't a clue to be honest but I do like my Lucky 15's, 31's and 63's.
I done a super heinz cost £6 covered every race and bagged 5 out of 7 should have been 6 out of 7 but for annie power still banked £263 not bad at all
What is that please dancafc?
The super heinz is a 7 selection wager consisting of 120 bets: 21 doubles, 35 trebles, 35 four-folds, 21 five-folds, 7 six-folds and a seven-fold accumulator.
Ps Picked my horses for day 2, not confident so wont put up. A bit leftfield, a bit french and 1 heart ruled head.

Peanut I have no clue about horse racing. Just pick a name and Hope for the best .
I used to be like you now I spend half hour or so reading through either the racing post or the racing post app if you ain't driving to Cheltenham it's worth getting a copy of the racing post and getting some ideas in your head on the way there

Okay thanks. I'll give it a shot! Just got to work out which horses to put it on now
Best chance of making money on CofC in the GN (IMHO) is if Shutthefrontdoor goes badly on Saturday at Kempton or is a doubt to line up and the market decides that AP will be on board. Current 40s on Betfair Win market would look huge if so. Surely AP will go out wearing green and gold.

Without a shadow of doubt AP will be riding in green and yellow, how's the model looking ATM do we have any early candidates yet?

Despite my model's penalty for his age, it makes Oscar Time a must-have each way for me (I backed him before his OK prep at Donny at 50s 5 places - still 50s with BetVic & won't run again before 11 April so could get same price for 6 places if and when they go the extra place). Best chance on easy side of Good but stat-profile is at least Strong place potential for all going but extremes and for any likely weight-rise. Almost certainly he won't be #1 selection - there's a number of them that are borderline ATM and the degree of any weight rise (and, in some cases, quality of remaining preps) will shift their ratings one way or another. However, obviously, some definite positive moves yesterday..........more shortly. A number of GN entries seem to be headed for the 21f chase at Kempton on Saturday as their final prep. As regards weights, the participation (or not) of Many Clouds and Sam Winner are obviously highly significant (could limit a rise to 1lb or open it up to a 6lb+ rise). Crucial for many.
