Such a weird career/life trajectory. When he first got into our team I thought he stood out in the way Bowyer, Parker, and Gomez did at similar ages. Really expected him to go on to big things at the top end of the Premier League. Still feels mad how he went from that to where he is now. If he’s happy, though, then good for him.19

I find comments like this a bit harsh tbf when people clearly don't know the bloke. He was the year below me at school and not thick. Was just a supremely talented footballer. His GCSEs defo included some As and A*s.AddicksAddict said:

That he went on to pursue an interest such as bodybuilding to this extent is his choice and maybe he has somehow dissolved his brain into goo by taking a load of steroids, but I don't think that's going to have been the case.11 -

Sadly, I think this is a clear case of moving to a bigger club who are just taking a punt. It might have been a good financial short term move but a disasterous long term one. What always puzzled me is that surely he should have had the advice of his dad.2

The Poyet family used to live near me in Chelsfield.
This was when Gus was still playing .
They had a large house in World's end Lane and I used to see them quite often.
One thing I always found strange was they used to have a security guard standing outside their house most of the time
I could understand it if they were politicians or members of the Royal family, but I found it odd for a footballer0 -

Seeing the picture of Diego now compared to the streamline lad that left CAFC for West Ham, there is no way now that Andy Carroll would put Poyet in a head lock for slagging him off on social media when DP was only 15.
A footballer that definitely lost his way after being an excellent fetch and carry midfielder and helped keep CAFC up in the 2nd half of the season when he was POTY.

Perhaps this is just a case of someone who grew up with football for all of his young life with his father being a player (and the associated comparisons) and then a manager, then became one himself and simply found that he did not enjoy it. There are plenty of footballers who have fallen out of love with the game but who have to put food on the table so cannot simply walk away in the way that Diego has.
There might be other aspects to this though. In turning to another avenue that is competitive he has retained that competitiveness but with relative anonymity and less expectation but, most of all, he now has control of his destiny. His success is no longer dictated by the whims of coaches or managers. It is totally in his hands. That is something most people in their life would love to have. I wish him well in his pursuit of that.5 -
I too thought he was destined to have a stellar career in football but it was obviously not making him happy. Hope he’s found a like he enjoys but looking at his body and in particular his facial features he’s definitely been using steroids at some point.0

Diego Poyet is my favourite story of talent going missing. He was unreal in that breakthrough season and I was certain he'd play for England/Uruguay. He sat in front of the defence and dictated the play so damn well and I felt like he was the reason we stayed up.
It's amazing to some that someone with extreme talent (and clearly a great work ethic to get to that stage) might "waste" it by not continuing but yeah, it's just not for everyone.2 -

Wasn't the story that Roland and Katrien would only offer him the contract if he agreed to go straight out on loan to Liege that next season. I've seen him in a couple of Kent gyms. He comes across as friendly, knowledgeable and polite. Hat on, of course. He lifts very heavy, but luckily clears his plates after loading them!5

I was at Sparrows lane watching an Under 21 match the year that Nathan was the coach of that age group.
Diego played in one game I watched soon after he'd been out with a bad injury.
He was so slim then and I got talking to his brother Matias who was a look alike with the same slim build. The reason I remember his Brother's name was it's the same as my Son's name (English version)
Matias was at university and he was bright as a button.
This was 13 years ago so can't remember the conversation verbatim but Matias did say unlike his Dad Gus, his uncles and Grandad back in Uruguay were and had been Basketball players.

Not saying that there may not have been a few attention seeking nutters talking drivel, but that's a far cry from a 24/7 security guard on the gate of a big house in the Kent countryside.3
