Sacking the assistant and keeping the manager is a strange one. First thought was that maybe he has got a lower league managers job, but why not say so.

He's the younger brother of Steve McMahon. The timing and lack of reason suggests either a fall out or a disciplinary issue especially as there is no usual "we would like to place on record our thanks" etc etc. The other possibility is that McMahon was already in place when Robinson took over and it is more than possible that he wants to bring in his own man now.
Their boxing day game has already been called off as well, could have at least given him till Monday then sacked him
Assistant Manager.

Doncaster Rovers are delighted to confirm the permanent appointment of Gary McSheffrey as the club’s first-team manager.
The 39-year-old has been handed the role after an extensive recruitment process. McSheffrey has taken charge of Rovers’ past four fixtures in all competitions on a caretaker basis, and picked up his first win against Shrewsbury Town earlier in December.

Steve Evans sacked at Gillingham - not before time either!
Should have took the Stevenage job when he was offered it
Actually more the fool is Gills owner Paul Scally for rejecting the Stevenage approach. They could have got some much needed compo for Evans rather than having to pay him off now..
Mike Flynn or Neil Smith look favourites for the vacant post at the Gills.
