This is a thread I have been waiting for. I love food, and I love eating out. Top tips, from all sorts of styles:
- Luciano's in Lee, as has already been recommended. All of it is cracking. - Favourable Chicken on Burnt Ash Hill. Peng munch. Wings have a delightful spicy kick. - Favourable Chicken next to Hither Green station. Peng munch. Their £5 meal deal is beast - drink, burger, two pieces of chicken, two wings and chips. - Manor Cafe, on Manor Lane, in Lee. Four quid for a fat fat fry-up will always see me happy. - Panas Gurkha curry house on Lee High Road. The zimbu chicken is absolutely fantastic. - Personally, I'm a fan of Best Kebab opposite Sainsburys in Lee Green - which is indeed the best kebab, for me. Great chicken meat and chips. - Nandos. - Morleys, with the exception of the one in Lee, sadly. Though I will concede that's cos I'm a wings guy and their wings are dogshite.

'Peng munch' wtf
Chicken fan! :):)
The chicken shop by hither green station next to the Biscuit Factory is surprisingly good. It is really cheap but easily to the standard of a "good" Morleys franchise.
2 bits and chips is about £2.30 which is great value. The chips are good the chicken is not greazy, I am fussy about bad chicken. It's always busy.
Classy chicken shop recommendation ha ha
Is that the Catford side or the Lee side of the station?
Lucianos in Lee is overrated, I cant abide soggy pizza but you will find me in the bar from time to time. About 4 doors down the road from Lucianos is a real gem of a restaurant....Caspian a Persian and Iranian restaurant. Great value and great food.
www.thecaspian.co.uk
Have to agree re Lucianos. I think you have to stick to the pizza. Carollas five minutes away in Lee Road beats it for food, friendly family service and prices. And pizza!
Another vote for Maggies Saffron Club in Blackheath for Indian Locale is ok Otherwise very thin pickings in Blackheath.

This. The only pie mash shop left in south London to make the pies in the original way. (Just raw meat, a little bit of seasoning and a spray of water in the pies before they go in the oven. Not pre cooked meat and certainly no gravy, like they do in Goddards, who have sold out to the tourist trade)
Yak and Yeti in Crystal Palace (sorry, I'll wash my mouth out with soap). There's one or two others in this mini-chain over Eltham way, I think, but I've not been to those.
There is a Yak and Yeti in Eltham High Street, been there a few times with family, last time couple of months ago. It's always OK. There's sod all else in Eltham I could say that about.
Some interesting sounding tips in this thread, though
Lale in Eltham has always been good in my experience.
What and where is it? Never heard the name come up when local family discuss where to go

Tried Carola's three times. If you like eating pure salt it is great, otherwise I have found it to be awful every time.

The best Italian, but not within walking distance is the place in Brockley, Le Querce. Otherwise Luciano's is reliable, and I usually have the veggie ravioli there which is decent, the pizza (sorry Leuth) is far better than Zero dee fecking grees. And cheaper I believe.

It's the kebab gaff opposite Eltham church. You go through the magic door at the back of the shop to get into the restaurant.

As AA Gill passes away the Sunday Times needs a new food critic, you could be the man but may need to broaden your reviews away from Fried Chicken shops in the SE12 area!
Kasturi as @Leuth has said is excellent in Charlton. Like The Hill in Greenwich too but it's a bit out of the way from the centre. Been in Reginella twice and the portions were huge. Goddard's Pie & Mash shop in Greenwich is good for cheap and filling food.
Babur, Brockley Rise Forest Hill/Honor Oak Park. Really good non-standard Indian. Don't get to eat out much but like it there. Sapporo in Catford is good (Japanese). Surprises me how anything half decent survives in Catford. I've never been but other half raves about Meze Mangal on Lewisham Way.
When I used to go to Sapporo, I don't think the staff were Japanese as they didn't understand when I spoke Japanese to them. Of course, my accent may be so appalling it wasn't actually understandable! Didn't stop me enjoying the food, but I've not been there for about ten years. Perhaps it's time to renew acquaintances.
Lucked out massively with Cinquanta in Sidcup a while ago. So good I returned with my parents a few weeks later. Best Italian food I've had in London more or less
If you mean the place on the corner of the triangle at the top of the one-way system, I've only been once but I found the food extremely mundane.
Spot the person who went to Zero Degrees and DIDN'T order pizza
No, spot the person who wasn't impressed by the mundane pizza. Neither were the two people with me.
Yak and Yeti in Crystal Palace (sorry, I'll wash my mouth out with soap). There's one or two others in this mini-chain over Eltham way, I think, but I've not been to those.
Bona, a pizzeria in Dartmouth Road, Forest Hill
FM Mangal in Camberwell
Franco Manca (spelling?) in East Dulwich.
The bar/restaurant in the old Naval College in Greenwich. Food's good, beer choice is very good, but since Meantime was bought out (by Coors?) I'm less inclined to frequent it.
FM Mangal in camberwell is incredible, the bread must have some diluted crack on it or something. Can only explain how much I can eat of it.
Chai Naasto in beckenham is very good, also does a railway lamb/chicken and an excellent lal Maas.
Not only the bread at FM Mangal, but the roasted onion they give you as an hor d'oeuvre.
I am sorry to say I went to Zero Degrees, and ordered a pizza. It was a Margherita only (their veggie option), and it was very poor. Very fragile base the wrong side of done (too burnt), and the tomato aspect of it was watery and dripped everywhere, the rest of the topping was pretty scant and bland. To eat it you had to scrunch up an amount into a dough-like ball and eat it off a fork. It took ages to arrive, and was not particularly cheap. Sorry Leuth, but I've had better pizza at the Workers Stadium in Beijing, and many other more humble places.
Their Funghi pizza is exceptional and also vegetarian, but fair enough. I've been going there for over 15 years and never had anything less than superb, but I'm willing to believe you had a bad experience. I'd rate Zero Degrees above the competition, and I've tried them all, from Pizza Express to Bianco43 to La Parma Pizzaria to Franco Manca to sodding Papa John's...the only one I haven't tried is that one on the Woolwich Road, and I'd be very happy to.
@Leuth it's interesting that you rate Zero Degrees better than Franco Manca, and that you've been going there for fifteen years and never been disappointed. I'd be up for doing a blind tasting with you of the same pizza, or as close as possible, from both places and see what we both think.
If you like a coffee and a warm filled Panini there are a number of places around. Archibals in Manor Lane is awful in my view, as is You Don't Bring me Flowers by Hither Green station. Arlo and Moe near Hither Green is nice enough but horrendously overpriced, similar to the two places near Sundridge Park station. With Jam and Bread near the old police station at Lee does exquisite coffee, but crap overpriced food. The cafe at the top of Shooters Hill in Oxleas is pretty good, as is the related place at Blackheath Standard Mocha's. I like the simple little cafe in Charlton Park too, decent for a decent price in a quirky setting. Got to go out now (Mrs Plums Birthday), but does anybody have any more?

Another good Coffee & Panini place is the deli (Meluucis) in Old Bexley.
They're open some evening too and their food is superb. They don't have an alcohol license so youhave to take your own but well worth a visit.
We ordered a home made tiramisu for a party a couple of years ago, the best I've ever tasted.

Surely whether Le Querce is within walking distance or not is dependent on your starting point?

Franco Manca's pizzas are nice, but they're not the last word. For one thing they're slightly too small! I also think that Zero Degrees' best pizzas have a complexity of flavour that FM lacks. But I can see how getting the wrong Zero Degrees pizza might give a bad impression. Their tandoori pizza from a while ago was an unmitigated failure. But at least they try stuff.
Another good pizza place in South (if not South East) London is that Joe Public place on top of Clapham Common station. You buy by the slice, but the slices are enormous, filling and extremely well-topped. And the crusts are exquisite.
