I tried Dartford Heath for the first time. Nice and flat although most of it's trails.

Went to Malling last week which is another flat one. I set a PB there.

Got one last long run this week then I'll be tapering for North Downs. It's come around quickly.
I am looking forward to NDR next week. Weather looks a little cooler at the moment too. Which I am glad about. I am aiming, possibly optimistically, to break the 3 hour mark.
Really not sure what to expect time-wise on this next week as never done a long trail run before. Have a feeling I'll be coming in at over 3 hours though. As you say weather at the moment is looking ideal with it being cooler.
  • I'll be around the same time as you guys I think, maybe a little behind. 2h59 is 9mins28 per mile which is tough going on hills, off road. I think I'll try beat 10 mins per mile/3h10.

It is weather dependent though, I may take some proper water breaks.
  • Week 4 (17k) of my 12 Week marathon plan completed this morning
  • Was another tourist today and although I’d need to check, pretty sure got my best time post covid.
Fairly random although it was a very flat course and lovely weather which all helps I’m sure

Which course was that @Fumbluff? I fancy trying to get my 5k time down a bit
  • Good luck to all at NDR today. Just arrived (#437). It is reasonably warm already and there is a bit of a breeze.
  • How did you guys do? That was harder than running a flat marathon. You don't even gain anything downhill as it's too steep or bumpy. So 3hr13 is okay, maybe could have paced it better.

Brilliant cake selection at the end by the way.

3:02 for me which I'm happy with. Just didnt have it in me to push under 3 hours. Took the sound advice from a woman who said to walk the hills.

First time doing a long trail run and you really notice it in your legs with the more uneven ground. Think I will get into it more now.

Agree about the cakes, amazing effort from people doing all of those and thought the marshalls and everyone around the course were fantastic.
  • Week 5 London training done. This weeks long run was 20k in 2:01, which I'm pretty chuffed with as last November I did a half marathon in 2:18. From now on its unknown territory as I've never ran further than a half before.
  • 3.31 for me. Those hills were like cliff faces. Got cramp around 23 k as we ran through the fields back up to the church. That last 5 miles was hellish.

Well done to anyone that finishes that. Now onto royal parks half in October. Think that may be a little easier.

Great work, that is sub-3 when you account for all the bottlenecks. I've already agreed to another marathon, Dorney Lakes on 2/10. It's flat tarmac and today was the mother of all training runs, if you or Kigelia are interested

PS fast Parkruns - this side of the river Sutcliffe is officially fastest, but a couple far more experienced people than me today said Bromley's quicker.

  • Great running guys, well done
  • Does anyone know much about the Hever Castle endurance runs, I am signed up to the half marathon this weekend and beginning to think it’s all going to be trial running which I am really not a fan of. I’m training for the London Marathon this year so really don’t want to be put off by something that I won’t actually be running when it comes to the marathon. I only ever do road running.

Great marathon times and although I've done a couple, they're not for me (not yet broken 4hrs!).
I'm a track athlete (800m) and this week am going to Finland to compete in the World Masters Athletics Championships for GBR.
The link below is a video about how this fulfils a long time goal of mine and will be following it up with my experience of the event.

Best of luck. Used to run 400/800 back when I was younger. Sometimes think of trying again but not sure my calf muscles would take the pace.

I look forward to seeing how the event goes.
  • My first post on this thread and did my first run of any sort since early May today. Being sat with my feet up for weeks has taken it's toll, my PR time a few minutes off my average of 25mins give or take.

I'm all in for the day and was sweating like a horse, which is where the similarity ends.😀

A clue as to the location for those who like teasers  A two word town, first word: one of the little piggies went there; second word: rhymes with the first name of a carry on film actress who's surname' was a royal castle.🤔
  • No long run for me this week, although I am going to attempt to beat my 5k PB today, which is currently around 27 mins 30.

Good luck with that @shine166 👍 It didn't feel as muggy to me today and there was plenty of breeze, so I reckon you've gotta be in with a chance.  Let us know how you get on! 😉
  • Looks like a bit of an enforced break from running for me as think I may have a stress fracture in my shin. Pain certainly consistent with the symptoms but going to see the GP to get it confirmed.

Anyone had experience of this and how long it took to clear up?

  • Anyone doing the ASICS 10K next week
  • Managed a post-Covid Parkrun best time this morning, taken me 105 runs and 15 Parkruns to get there, but gave me a lift when I saw my time. I’m still a huge 4 mins slower than 2019 times but I’ve just got keep chipping away at it.
I had a lie in today, didn’t want to let my post covid PB last week go to my head innit
  • Can any Marathon runners advise me how to deal with Cramps. I did the last London and Brighton Marathons and both times got horrid cramps around 22/23 miles . It totally wrecked my plans for a sub 4 hour.  Is it sodium tablets or different strength trainkng etc? All advice appreciated especially as doing London again in October.

In my last marathon I dealt with cramp by crying in pain for the last 13 miles.

Fairly sure it was caused by inadequate training as I've never had an issue before when I've trained properly and I never take sodium suppplements

What does everyone use for Long distance running? I was using these, but feels like my ankles roll in and give me barely any support. Only worn them 6/7 times in 6 months and am looking for something different.

Really don't understand the angled laces, I definitely got sucked into style over function.

  • I use Skechers gorun got a road pair and a trail pair. Good support yet not too heavy. And not super expensive

👀 Bit early in the morning for shoe porn 🤪

Many in my Club who regularly go the long distances (Marathons & Ultra's) swear by Brooks. I have my first pair now, but only just wearing them in and I don't generally run anything above a ten mile distance, so I can't personally recommend them yet.

    BTW What size are they?😎

Haha 8.5, it's a shame because I'm pretty sure my fastest runs have been wearing them and they make me feel like im walking on air, but on my half last week it felt like the ankle support kinda gave out half way round.

I think I need to go to a store where they get you to use a treadmill type machine to work out your posture.
  • I've never got on with Nikes or Adidas. When I was doing daft 20's on a weekend I used Asics Kayano. Have had Brooks many years ago and they were OK too. I still always have Asics now, probably more from habit and I know they won't cause me any grief and will do the job.

Technology moves on, there's new players on the market and everyone is different though so it really is worth spending the time in a specialist shop getting a proper analysis done.
