Did the Lucca Parkrun in Italy on Saturday - A beautiful course, ran entirely on the city walls. A real PB type course - flat, paved and mainly in the shade of the trees that line the path on the walls.  Sadly not in PB form though.  Really worth doing it if you find yourself in that part of the world.
Did this look like one where they'd happily look after luggage? Or I'll try leave my bag at Pisa/Lucca station. I'll be local in a few weeks.

I did Orpington PR yesterday. Got two more 18+ mile runs planned before I'm hopefully marathon ready again. It's so much harder training in summer than winter
Not sure about that.  Volunteers are super friendly.  Station is close by. Not sure if it has luggage facilities.  Stay in Lucca for the night. Fabulous city.  At this time of year it seems the visitors out number locals in race.  Over half of 80 odd runners/ walkers were English speakers.  They have an English volunteer for announcements.

PR question:  My last 2 PR official results have both reflected slower times than my watch ( approx 20 seconds in Lucca) and lower placings.  The nature of both courses allowed me to count runners in front of me!  I wasn't the only one to experience this either. I know some of you volunteer, so was wondering if anybody has any ideas?  I'm usually so busted at finish that I'm not paying attention, so its probably something I'm doing wrong.  I got token from one guy and presented it to another along with my bar code.  Does clock stop at this point? I thought token had finishing place on it.
Hi I’ve done timing before at Parkrun, your time stops when you cross the finish line, I’ve had problems with timing before when I haven’t started my watch at the correct time. On Saturday the runners started running I didn’t hear any go and was about 5 seconds out.
  • Got a bit of a mental block getting to 20 miles for my marathon prep. I think a lot of it is boredom by the time ive been running for 2 1/2 hours, the thoughts start to become quite negative lol

Do you listen to podcasts? I save a couple for long runs then the first 2+ hours goes faster as you're distracted.

I did 20 miles on Saturday but it was over 3 parts, which I believe is a good idea at the moment given water stops are necessary.

These tales of distance running are inspiring, but all I have to look forward to at present is annual "Squeaky Bone" relay event on Sept 25th (organized by the good folk of Olney Running Club) A fun event for teams of four each completing a 3.5 mile circuit in woodland/open countryside.

Get's it's name because the Baton is a squeaky bone fitted with a timing chip. One of the highlights of the year for my Club as we enter several teams supposedly evenly matched time wise, although in practice that never happens. I'm running for the Muddy Paws this year, probably on anchor leg.

Something to think about for CL runners in future if we have enough. Or a similar event closer to London as I'm something of an  outlier being based in Northamptonshire.

As mentioned earlier, the clock stops when you cross the finish line. Also, the nature of parkrun means that there can be cock-ups in the timing - most likely down to a "funnel ducker" (someone who crosses the line but won't take a finish token, which screws everything up) or maybe the tokens aren't in order/there's a missing token.

17 is my longest so far, was hoping for 22 so I'm not going into the big day with too much to make up.

I can't run with headphones, makes me feel like either a car is about to run me down.. or a physopath is going to jump out of the Bush 😆.
Mrs and child are away next weekend, so I might try again on Saturday without the 5am small person wakeup call and see if that helps.

All credit to you for getting to 17 miles with no headphones! Couldn’t do 5k without distraction.

Have you thought about those headphones cyclists use that don’t go in or on your ears?

When do you run into the wall, or is that a treat you've yet to experience / overcome? I doubt boredom will be a problem on race day, but I'm not sure you'll be able to imagine what it's like then when out on those arduous training runs. Never having done more than 16.45 miles myself (in and around Naseby, the battle being in 1645 hence the distance), I can't give you advice on that. Run faster so it doesn't take so long 😎

Are you sure you've not run up against "the wall" (no, not that lot down from the road)?

It can lead to the brain doing funny things and negative thoughts. Especially if you're training solo without any distractions.

Could you just use one headphone? Then as long as you're only attacked from the left/right you'll be fine :D

I mean, its quite possible. First 12 miles are great, nice being on me own... child not asking me questions etc. By about 2 1/2 hours I start wanting to be at home/ sore core (which I think isnt being helped by recently joining the gym), missing me dead nan and all sorts 😂. I also run alone, so im sure the 'company' on the day and new route will help distract me.

I would be interested in a CL team at some point sounds fun.

I use the bone conduction style to avoid that. They work really well. You lose a little quality when listening to music but they are great for podcasts or audiobooks

  • I'd actually suggest trying to get out with someone else who can also hit the 18-22 distances you want to cover.

Got nobody unfortunately, signed up for LLHM next year with a mate though.

I had friends divide up the distance, so no need to find somebody else that's training for a marathon etc. If not get somebody to run the last 6 miles or so.  That way when the going gets tough you have somebody to help you focus and encourage.

Thanks - it seems then that my timing was correct and I was given the time of somebody else!  A few people must have got in ahead of me after the finish.  There was no funnel. I just need to pay attention and make sure it doesnt happen again!

I've ordered some headphones, gonna give them a go on Saturday.
  • Unusual 5 miler for me this morning. Got shat on by something large, a red kite, buzzard, or crow at a guess as I'm about as inland as it's possible to be in England. It's never happened to me before and thankfully I had a cap on, but I'm told it brings good luck, which I'm hoping goes the way of the addicks! Didn't feel lucky at the time though😡

Good idea.  I would definitely try to get over 20 miles at some point.  I was told by various runners that a marathon is a 20 mile warm up for a 10K race and that 20 miles is the half way mark!  That got my attention.  Working out nutrition/hydration is also key.  The wall is when you hit empty, it doesn't have to happen.
  • Managed 17 today, got caught out with how warm it was. Thought I was gonna make 20m but the sis gel at 15 blew up as I opened it, covered in the stuff and lost my flow. Music definitely helped, if I stick 2 prodigy albums on at mile 10 il be skipping home lol.

Weston Turville? I believe it's the most inland point in the UK...

No. Turns out I'm positively coastal compared to some of these places. My Google search came up with a village in Derbyshire about 70 miles inland whereas I'm only about 50, so I did my local PR this morning at Corby (on sea🤣)
