1 of the England players (I think it was Jimmy), was ridiculed the other day for saying something along the lines of Starc has been the difference between the 2 sides & if you took him out of the Australia side, the series would be a lot closer.

Looks like he was right
He was - plus the fact that the MCG pitch is low and slow meaning Cook can get well forward to the quick bowlers.
Sydney will be similar so England will be competitive there as well even if Starc plays which would be a big risk for the Aussies to take.
Another pleasing aspect of Broad's upturn in form is that Mark Taylor has won his bet with the annoying Shane Warne, over whether Broad would get 100 runs in the series.
declare overnight or carry on batting into tomorrow ??
Golfie, cant believe you've said that ! Of course bat on, if we can bat another 30 mins, maybe get another 20 runs, totally demoralise them - allow them no way back.
Disagree! 5-10 overs of Australia batting at the end and hopefully nick 1 or 2 wickets. Not sure if another 20 runs matters that much.
What end? Do you mean you want Cook and Jimmy to bat for 80 overs tomorrow ?!
Would be amazing...
5-10 overs before end of play today.
you do realise that when you posted that comment play had ended about 4 hours earlier........
I stayed up all night to watch it & was thinking just that - declare with 8-10 over left that evening & hope to winkle out 1 or 2 before close of play. Not much conjecture with the BT comms team (don't know what was said by the TMS guys) but I thought a quick 20-30 runs once Broad was out might have been the way to go, but Cook seemed resolute with just grinding on. Vaughan seemed to think that you should get as many runs as possible as did Boycs so it seems I was in the minority (not the first time I may add............)
One thing you must ALWAYS remember about Australian logic and sporting arrogance. If England ever beat Australia, at any sport, they will never concede that we have played well in winning but that they only lost because they played badly.
I think Cook will pass all bar Tendulkar. Doubted him myself this series but a great innings. Yes the Ashes are lost but still important enough to win the test.
That was a waste of time then. Should have declared overnight (or preferably late last night) as I suggested. Just wasted 10 mins for the change in innings.
So Cook was on the field for the whole Aussie 1st innings.
On the field for the whole English 1st innings.
Will be on the field for the whole Aussie 2nd innings.
Any player ever been on the field for every ball of a test match?
Dunno, but if we can get them out and leave a modest total to chase he stands a good chance of doing so. Might not even have to bat again, but that seems fairly unlikely.

Far from it. Aussies only have 10 mins to get themselves prepared and Anderson and Broad with a new ball and lots of cloud cover.
We could be in far worse situations. Hopeful we can get two or three early wickets.

Are there any stats for averages in dead rubbers ?
That would test the statisticians on Cricinfo !!!
Looks like he was right
All test matches against this lot count for something dead rubbers or not

I think they need a new joke...
491 all out.
Cook carries his bat. 244 not out.
Believe that makes Cook the first opener to carry his bat in a test at the MCG.
