    English 11 only, seen only

    Gooch
    Cook
    Vaughan
    Gower
    Pieterson
    Greig
    Knott
    Flintoff
    Botham
    Underwood
    Anderson

Okay maybe too many all rounders but fun to watch and you could play with the batting order. Vaughan as captain would take care of egos, 8 England Captains in one dressing room.

I make that 9 England captains. APE Knott captained England v West Indies in a ODI at Scarborough in 1976, IT Botham's international debut.
Ah the 1976 Scarborough ODI.....odd occurrence in that game. Ball flicked down to fine leg by an England batsman. I think Michael Holding threw it into the keeper's end....the ball hit the stumps.....the ball carried on straight up the pitch and hit the bowler's stumps with Graham Barlow out of his ground. He was given not out (incorrectly I believe).

not having BT (only Sky) you wouldn't know they were happening in a couple of weeks.....Sky would have their AshesHD channel up and running and the countdown clock on SSN.

    shame really.

anyone know if any of the terrestrial channels have an evening highlights package? (channel 4 or 5??)

You can get BT via Sky. Ok you have to pay but it's not a huge amount. By the way BT's build up is pretty lacklustre. I keep looking for preview programs but nothing doing.
I have to disagree with you there. I'm with Sky & they told me i'd have to pay an extra £25.99 a month for BT Sport, which I think is a ridiculous amount of money. I'll be finding an online stream
£26pm to see the Ashes, pretty good value I'd say. Less than £1 a day.
Errrrm......you have to pay BT a £20 one off signing on fee, plus £22 per month for a minimum 12 month contract.
    Total £284.....I’m with Sky.
So if you are only going to want to watch the Ashes that’s £11.36 per day......and possibly more for games that don’t go the full 5 days for reasons of rain or early result.
Given that there’s absolutely no way I’ll be able to stay awake all night for 5 days at a time (which would give me the worst case of jet lag imaginable without even leaving the house), it’s a non starter to watch it live. I’d have to record and watch it the following day in the hope that somehow or another I don’t hear about any of the action by some other unwanted means.....Sky will go all out, and quite deliberately, to update one and all at every opportunity......of that you can be sure! With terrestrial TV and radio not far behind.
£284, well you wouldn't get too far with that if you wanted to go and see it live.
I'm sorry but why do people think that they shouldn't have to pay to watch something like the Ashes away? You get BT with Sky like I have and you get loads more, Prem football, FA Cup, Champions League plus many other sports. It's the world we live in. £284 still less than £1 a day for your 12m contract.

Funny you should say that as I seriously considered making the trip out to Oz to watch the entire series but for one reason and another I had to shelve the idea.
The major annoyance is that I had thought that by signing up to Sky I would ‘always’ be able to watch ALL test cricket. I consider I have already paid!
Add to that I love the Sky cricket commentary team, they have become something like my old favourite pair of Russell & Bromley sheepskin slippers.....a nice comfortable familiar fit. I’m not sure I’d happily fall straight into bed with a new set of commentators with the same enthusiasm. They will be hard pushed to match up to Sky.

I know you're old but you're not stupid! It won't be long before a lot of sport won't be available via Sky of BT or any terristial channel. Streaming via the like dof Amazon and Netflicks is the future.
If you buckle and get BT please be assured that they won't have Ashes away forever! Anyway at the moment that's all they have, Sky still have other away tours.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this 1. If you think it's acceptable, then bully for you, but I think £284 a year extra to watch The Ashes on BT Sport, when I already pay lots for a Sky subscription, is taking the piss!
  • I’m not remotely aware of the figures involved but I have a hunch that this may not turn out to be ‘the earner’ BT were hoping for.

No but getting upset because you have a satellite service that no longer has the rights to something you want to watch is.
  • Stoneman gets another 50 as we reach 121-4 in our 2nd innings.
  • 130-7 now from 79-0. Hope this isn't a taste of what is to come.

    Get used to it mate.

And of course the habitual 8th wicket England recovery - now 174-7.
  • Make that 194 for 8, but hope springs eternal as The Burnley Lara joins Jonny B, this could be fun
  • Our ladies not doing too badly 280 all out, soft reckless dismissals by the sounds of it, but the Aussies are 103-4 having been 48/0. Come on England
  • 207-9 effectively all out as Ball injured. Can we please call up Plunkett now for some real pace
  • Is Jamie Overton currently injured? He's the quickest in the country atm I think - albeit expensive

    Cough Stuart Meaker cough.

But yes Overton has pace and bounce. He will probably play the next warm up game. Although at this rate he will be injured before the first test.

Good to hear woakes bowled well.

    Quicker than Tymal Mills?

Jamie Overton isn't in the squad is he? Just his brother?

Tymal Mills probably is the quickest but struggles to bowl 4 overs in T20s. Not much good when the side has 90 to bowl in a day.

    CA 24-6 Edit 25-7

    Woakes 4-12
    Overton 2-7
    Anderson 1-4

A sign of things to come ;-)
  • If the Aussies had a county side in the position we have CA we would probably be waxing lyrically at how threatening their bowlers are.

Equally, if we had lost this match, we would probably be saying that the squad should return home.

As the saying goes "on occasions you're never quite as good as you think you are and on others you're not as bad as you think you are."

And I don't think we're that bad. Or that the Aussies are that good. And am confident that a drawn series at 8/1 is a good bet.
  • I think we’ll make a good account of ourselves.
  • There's no doubt our bowling is strong. Despite Finn, Wood and Stokes all out, you can see the depth. We could probably field 2 decent bowling units.

Think the series will be a relatively low scoring affair, perhaps the reason I don't agree with Addick Addict that a drawn series is a good bet. Weather permitting that requires a drawn test, and I have my doubts we will see a test where both teams score 400+
  • Typical Aussie cheating, collapsing to prevent our bowlers getting a proper workout...

Typically after that comment they put on 45 so far for the 8th wicket! Crane has been expensive, 27 off his 6 overs

Drawn Series Odds will be even better after we lose the first test.
