As a slight diversion away from the Test, i wondered on the origins of the surname Starc, wondering if it is from Balkans, or Greek, or Germanic, only to look it up and find it comes from.......Suffolk.
Interesting that we only had 4 bowlers back then, with Bell at No 6, having a quality spinner who takes wickets AND gives control makes such a difference
Quick scoreflash from end of Day 2 at Adelaide 2010: Australia 245, England 317-2. Only 7 years ago but might as well be a hundred.
With a top 7 of Strauss,Cook,Trott,KP,Colly,Bell and Prior, it shows you how far we have fallen.
And a spinner who then bowled us to victory in the second innings. And Broad and Anderson both 7 years younger. And Finn tearing in to bowl before his wobble.

That Aussie attack was far weaker too
Our bowlers are poor. Moeen isn't good enough as a front line international spinner and the pace bowlers are either too old, too slow or lack the variation needed to make an impact. It's depressing how obvious these flaws were before the tour and that nothing was done to address them.
Moeen destroyed South Africa on the renowned dustbowls of England and bowled well in the first innings of Brisbane until his finger literally fell apart. I wouldn't write him off yet - Australia is a hard place to bowl finger-spin unless you gain experience doing so. It also gets much easier when you have a penetrative fast bowling attack alongside you.

What would you have done to address the bowling problems? Finn- Not fit. Wood- not fit. Who else in the fast bowling department would have made a difference that hasn't been picked? What spinner would you have picked ahead of Moeen? Personally I would have had Jack Leach there. But I can't think of any English fast bowler that would have made a difference. Apart from a fit and firing Mark Wood. The cupboard is bare.
The Australians have three bowlers who bowl regularly at 90 MPH. Starc's fastest ball today was 93.5. Their spinner Lyon spins it. Our seamers bowl between 80 and 85 MPH. That is a massive difference. Without swing and seam, our bowlers are neutered.
If England's academies weren't producing the goods we should have dealt with it in the old fashioned way and sent search parties to South Africa with bucket loads of cash and a suitcase full of blank passports.

This could explain Broad, Woakes and Anderson’s pained expressions today. I hope that get some ice on that to reduce the swelling.

Aaarrghhh....!!!
Can you just stop this? It's making me miserable.
We could talk about our football team instead.
We could, but I've got over the situation with our football team. Sadly, that is. This football club will not be a great place while this lot are in charge. Getting beaten (and, potentially well beaten) by a fairly ordinary Aussies side is hugely disappointing.

We need to get at least 350 to stand a chance. Need to occupy the crease (and score runs, not play & miss or scratch around) and at least give our bowlers something to aim for going into day 4. Following on or a deficit of over a 100 runs & its Goodnight Vienna.
Oh, and for the ECB to grow some & get Stokes back into the team. Innocent until proven guilty & all that. The CPS are probably all Aussies & will delay any decision until mid January when its all over.
We just need to bat. The way some people have gone on about these bowlers it's like they're better than McGrath and Gillespie in their pomp. They're just a reasonably talented bunch who can bowl fast. Lyon is their best bowler

They don't have to be McGrath or Gillespie to get our batsmen out. But bowling at 90 to 93 Mph is very challenging.

I would have taken Plunkett, who is a bit nippier than any of the other bowlers in the squad. Overton is very military medium really

Must be pretty embarrassing to choose to field and then have the opposition declare.
