  • doesn't matter if we avoid it or not, just delays the inevitable

Watching Aussie coverage. They seem utterly confused that our tail has wagged a bit. Think they expected the white flag to come out at 142-7.

Small victories. Avoid the follow on here and take some wickets under the lights.

I'm optimistic as evidenced by my assertion that we would draw the series. But I have to admire someone who take the positives out of our current predicament.

I hope it's the way the players are thinking otherwise they might as well raise that white flag. A positive mindset from Woakes and Overton has got us from 300 runs behind to within touching distance of forcing them to bat again.

Take some wickets and make them uncomfortable.
  • 219-8 at the end of the session.

24 more runs to avoid a follow on.

    Overton 36*
    Broad 0*

They won't enforce the follow on anyway. A lead of say 180 means that they only have to get 220 to set us 400 batting last when it is likely to suit Lyon as much as their quickies.
  • Australia don't normally enforce the follow on

True, but they might do if they get an hour at England under the lights

In this case, it must be very tempting for them to get our top order back in under the lights.

Lyon now has 7 wickets in the series - 6 of them are against left handers with Woakes being the exception. The others are Stoneman, Cook, Malan and Moeen who has got out to Lyon in all three innings to date!

Broad goes for 3 (17) - yet another left hander to Lyon.

    227-9 Overton 41* (73)

215 behind and another 16 needed to avoid the follow on - if applied
  • Jimmy is a great blocker. Let’s hope they get over the line.
  • 227 all out. Anderson reviewed but absolutely plumb.

So Lyon has now a full set of the six England left handers and 8 of his 9 wickets have been courtesy of the breed. Not hitting against the spin would be a good place to start improving on the situation.

  • Australia not enforcing the follow on as predicted and will bat under lights.

Boo. boring boring Aussies. They just can't get over Headingley 1981, can they?
  • Of course they didn't bother with the follow on.

Inflict as much damage as possible to our woeful bowling attack. Their confidence is already shot to bits. The Aussies are about to shoot the bits to smaller bits!
  • Well done Overton and Woakes. The rest, with the possible exception of Cook, pathetic. No technique, no heart, no fight, no clue. I said that we would be bowled out for under 250 and unfortunately I was right.
  • Well at least it means thay the Series will be wrapped up before the boxing day test & so no need for me to stay up on xmas night & can get a good nights kip before going to Southend. I feel for all the Brits who have tickets for the last 2 tests.

The comeback has begun as Bancroft goes
  • Warner takes his guard a foot outside his crease to negate the swing. If Ballance were batting he would be 6 inches in front of the stumps.

Was he out Mouth Before Wicket?
  • Tough batting conditions. Cook and Stoneman will be delighted to not be out there again!

  • Terrible review. When even Broad isn’t interested, that shows how not out that was
  • Only thing that can help us now is rain, rain & more rain........that or The Kiwi's declaring war on Oz tomorrow & storming the beaches at daybreak.
  • Bairstow has an issue with one of his fingers. Occupational hazard for a keeper but doesn't make the job any easier.
  • England giving this a good go. 41-3
  • Dare I say Woakes is bowling well
  • what time finish tonight?
  • Hopefully that marks the end of Swann's commentating career
  • Sometimes I hate technology, that looked stone dead
  • If ever you need an example of why Sky's coverage is far better than BT, was Swanns comments on the Smith lbw - what an idiot.

While true, I still Australia should've enforced the follow-on and taken their innings victory. Damn their lack of ruthlessness...
