  • 176-4 at close and almost half way there
  • Great effort from England today, even Geoffrey thinks so

Though I'm really not sure that Smith's first LBW should be overturned because a millimetre over half the ball pitched outside anymore than the same rule applies to "bowled". Either we trust the technology or we don't and as long as it is consistently right or wrong I don't see the issue.

I dont get your point AA, the same aplies to bowled (unless theyve changed the rules and i've missed it). To me, technology works wonderfuly well, and is a million percent better and more accurate than human eye - as is proved in virtually every Test Match. Smith wasnt out because more than half the ball pitched outside leg stump.
That is my point - if technology says that the ball would have hit the stumps, however small a part of that ball is, then it should be given out. In the same way that, however small a part of the ball pitches in line with the stumps, a batsman should also be given out LBW.

I just don't get why we should have tolerance levels for technology - either we trust it or we don't. If we do that and stick to two reviews per innings, then we remove "umpires call" from the equation and teams would have to be be careful to review only what they consider to be "howlers" e.g. a batsman is given out when he knows he's hit it. Which is exactly what technology was brought in to do. We don't, after all, have "umpires call" in tennis do we?
And I don't trust it and if this Test doesn't show everyone its flaws then it never will. Technology has no place in sport.
    What flaws?
You haven't been watching obviously. What ever ball tracking system they are using it has produced the most questionable results I (and many of the experts) have ever seen.
  • Pretty impressive days play. Didn't think we had that in us.
  • Well well well. A fascinating day's cricket. Australia still favourites, but England have given themselves a chance.

    Great stuff!
  • If England get the outstanding 176 runs, I think all of the contributors to this thread need to go into a big field together and each eat a hat. Myself, included, I should add.

Some of us have been calling nothing between the sides from the outset but happy to join you in celebration. However, we will lose by one run if we only get another 176 runs ;-)
  • Good to see us putting in some serious fight. Shame Malan went, if Root gets 150, we win. Root goes, thats it

... and if Root gets 150 it will go down in history as one of the greatest test innings.
  • A cracking session, hostile bowling, determined batting rearguard

  • If Root can survive at least the first session we have a fair chance...
  • On a more sober note after today’s excitement, we are more than likely to lose this match and that will be because of the lack of runs coming from our Top 5 (with the exception of Root in this innings).

Predictably this was always going to be our Achilles heel in this series and has been exacerbated by Cook’s lack of form.

So I agree with @Addick Addict - if Root gets 150 we may win, if not we won’t. I’m also quite happy to chomp my way though a tasty hat in any field of your choice if Bairstow and Mooen smash a 100+ partnership to see us home!
  • Still annoyed at Vince giving his wicket away. 2 or 3 down and i'd fancy us to win from here. As it stands it's still a huge ask and almost impossible if Root gets out before lunch tomorrow.

Still we'd all have taken this when at one point yesterday we were looking at following on and facing an innings defeat, now we have a slim chance of winning.
  • I'd have taken 176/4 before the innings started. All the pressure is on Aussies now. They had this game won and they've let us back in. If they'd enforced the follow-on they'd have won by now.

Indeed. Lovely to see the fight today, but it says a lot that we're quite impressed Malan got 29 - if Pietersen or Bell had got 29 batting at 5 it would have been seen as a big failure.

But its all about context, Malan has had to bat in probably the worst batting conditions and has done well, imo - it took a super ball to get him out - some real positives there.

Steve Smith. Pug faced numpty and flat track bully. I pray with everything I've got that we somehow pull the great escape out of the bag.

Wouldnt it be effing brilliant - almost as brilliant as watching Charlton play at Wembley in the FA Cup !
  • Could be an exciting & nailbiting final day. However, I always think back to a lovely summers day about 10 years ago. Can't remember who we were playing but it was a sunday morning & I woke up looking forward to a great days play. Pieterson was batting & I thought I'd settle down to watch some fireworks. play started at 11am & by 11.10 he was out & the day was effectively over. Just think the same will happened tomorrow. By the time the new ball arrives Root, Woakes & Ali will be out & the tail will then be blown away.

Great last few days for England shame most of the first two was so appalling.

Good to see we can not only compete but get on top even if for a few days, my only worry is that we built Adelaide up as our sure thing that if we do lose it might be catastrophic for morale.

I couldn't see Bell nor Pietersen easily bettering a 29 in those conditions even in their hay-day - Malan done his job and it really did take a ripper of a ball, I think that may well have got anyone out, it was pitch perfect.

Do agree though - we seem impressed when any batsman is getting into the 30s+, which is not a good sign but.. we are England.

    True.

He's looked the best of the new three this series, to be fair.
  • Play it like a T20 game now.
  • I suspect we will still lose, but its great to have shown some grit.

If Root and Woakes can get in and survive the first 10 overs of the new ball, then we may have a slim chance. If Root goes, heads will drop, and I fear a collapse.
  • This game ends with a 1-wicket win, Overton 55* off 32 balls ;)
  • A massive shame that we could end up "winning" the last 2 days of the Test match, but losing the match and going 2-0 down, a massive deficit to make up going into the WACA.

Cummins is a great bowler, but fragile. Australia can't afford to overbowl him. What we really need to do is find a way to stop Lyon holding one end up, if he leaks runs then Smith will have to bowl his seamers more than he'd like.

You must tell us what it was like to see us winning it in 1947. Or were you referring to being there the year before? Either way, it must still have been a fantastic experience.
  • Would be a great story but can't see us doing this - too long a tail.
All out before my alarm goes off at 06:10
  • Tomorrow’s first session will be potentially series defining. Great effort to genuinely get the game back to a place where it’s 50/50 but the hard work to win begins first thing.
