in fairness my cousin used to do go karting and its a pricey hobby, cant remember the user but theres a guy on here whos boy races im sure he will be a lot more clued up than me.

I could be wrong about this, but I'm sure I heard/read somewhere in the past that his Dad worked multiple jobs to help fund Lewis carting career. By the standards of most F1 drivers, who tend to come from well to do to flat out super-rich families (especially these days) he is like Oliver Twist.

My son Jacob races UK Super One which is the British Championship series Lewis raced in.
The cadet class that Jacob races in is 8-13 year olds. Jacob is 9 - and we are running with a team. Our running costs are c£15k-20k per year.
We run at a low budget.
There are boys who get flown in the family helicopter to races, and the teams winter jolly for the kids (when most of his school mates will do a cub camp) is a race in Dubai (which is out of or budget).
The circuit owners all remember Lewis. When the other boys (as we do) have the teams turn up with karts in the back of a Lorry - Lewis and his old man turned up and worked out the back of the family Astra estate. He couldn't afford to run him in a team so he did it himself. So Lewis was stuck with an old kart that his self trained mechanic dad run for him (alongside holding down multiple jobs including working in the Buckmore cafe in the lunch break).
He won the UK championships with a record breaking season which has never been bettered since at the age of 10.
He then went up to Ron Dennis when he was presented with his trophy - said he had run out of money and asked Ron for sponsorship.

Wikipedia (I know it's not the best source) His father told him that he would support his racing career as long as he worked hard at school. Supporting his son became problematic, which caused him to take redundancy from his position as an IT Manager and become a contractor. He was sometimes employed in up to three jobs at a time

His Father backed him as much as he could which is what most parents would do - especially if their child has a talent. Parents like most young footballers, tennis players, swimmers, academics etc etc have: that sacrifice so much to give a child the best chance to achieve the best they can in life.
He made the most of his opportunity. Deserves everything he has achieved. I have a great respect for him.

Well, I wouldn't have had the energy for 2 jobs - I could just about cope with the one job I had so,as I said, I take my hat off to his Dad.
Regarding not paying tax, I spent my entire working life resenting the amount of tax I paid and trying my best to minimise it. I trust myself to spend my money more wisely than the Government (of whatever colour) and bear in mind I did a lot of work for Government departments in my time. I can't imagine moving abroad permanently, although I have friends who have done and they seem to be ok.

FI greatly helps the likes of Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, Honda and Renault develop new technology that then migrates to their mass produced cars and aids their sales figures. It also provides huge amounts of publicity for their brands.
They wouldn't do it if there wasn't a return so on that basis they view paying Lewis £30m a year as a good investment.
Is anyone worth that money? No. Is anyone worth that money as a commercial investment? Clearly yes.

Rightly or wrongly, he put his preparations for the next race ahead of a PR event. Results would suggest he did the right thing, before that week his results were decidedly mixed, after that he won 5 from 7 I think.

Cmon, Damo, we all know that the likes of Tyson Fury,Ben Stokes,Gazza,Roy Keane (as he played for a British team) and Frank Bruno are the true British sporting heroes, whereas Lewis Hamilton,Chris Froome and Mo Farah are just tax dodgers.

It really irks me when I see people slagging him off, as many have done on here. He gets accused of arrogance but as someone who has followed his career closely, I have to say that he is one of the most humble sportsmen around.
Why is it that so many British people can't appreciate real greatness when it's in front of their eyes? When Lewis retires there may be no British F1 driver to support. Enjoy his success while you can.
