If Joe has good offers from elsewhere is anyone confident that we will match or even get close to them ? I think there is little doubt that our belts will be tightened again in the summer.
Haven't you heard about the takeover by the end of June?

"Just a few stumbling blocks" re Aribo's contract......See ya Joe!
Joe wants to stay his agent has good offers from elsewhere. It depends what we offer!
It depends what we offer.
There lies the problem.
I'm sorry but wages for many/most footballers are very much liveable. I was offered a 20-25% increase to do a very similar job (NHS) and because I've been in my job for 12 years and feel comfortable with my colleagues I decided that money wasn't the decider. The only reason a footballer chooses to move, IF THEY ARE HAPPY, is greed.

That’s a myth I’m afraid, unlike most of us, footballers have a shelf life much shorter than your 12 year example. Unless you are in the top of the football pyramid it’s unlikely your set for life. So your definition of greed is actually survival and their future. Unlike most of us we don’t have to renew contracts every year, two years, or if we’re lucky three years. It’s a great job yes, but it’s also not a very forgiving one either (ask the lads who are being released this year) A lot of football is also about opinions rather than your ability, so it’s a constant battle. Your 25% offer might have been taken if you had no certainty on your current job/contract or your future to pay bills. Maybe have a think about that one........
Joe wants to stay at Charlton, hopefully we offer close to or match the other offers, if so I think he stays I hope this explains the situation. 😀
But not if we are in L1 next season. It's like Bauer who's actually said that he'll discuss a new contract after we get promotion, i.e. not interested in talking yet, and if we don't go up forget it!
Each to their own and all that, but I’m not going’s to expend any thought or energy into worrying about next season. This one is still very much alive and there are a load of variables in play which will determine how our squad and management team looks next year. Got all summer to ponder that.
if we go up players will sign, if we don’t they will leave. it’s rather important, therefore, that we go up, as I really couldn’t handle the possibility of losing Parker!

What if it had been six times your salary?
What if one injury could end your career?
What if your career would be over in five years?
Precisely.
This is what people fail to understand.
I am certain Elliot, Hamer and Poyet are not in the slightest bit concerned that they have barely kicked a ball since they left Charlton. Good luck to them, they were given opportunities they could not turn down.

Unless you are 'high end' and wrapped up in the financial merry go round of Premier League football then hundreds of footballers may only get one opportunity of a life changing pay day.

I reckon Bauer has had enough of the sillyness and has a club to go to next season, regardless of what division we'll be struggling in.

This is true, but I do think young players with a lot of potential can move too early. I would say they should ensure they are a decent sized decision on the part of the buying club, rather than a hopeful punt. As Gomez showed, you can agree a contract that extricates you at the right time and a few extra quid can cost you in the long run.
I would say Aribo needs to play at a higher level and if we go up, his best option would be to stay with us for another season. If we don't, it is wise to move. He seems like an intelligent lad and it wouldn't make sense for him to decide his future until he knows what division we will be in. But he is comfortable in our team and with us he could focus on the step up without having to negotiate his way through a new set up which may not be a problem but has more chance to derail things.

But there's other things to consider if you're a footballer.
A player might want to test himself at a higher level, play with and against better players, train at better facilities. Also in Aribo's case he'll be well aware of how many other players are out of contract and probably leaving in the summer and knowing it's unlikely RD will do much to strengthen the squad. He doesn't even know if Bowyer and Jackson will still be here.
So if we're offering (for example as i've no idea) 5-6k a week and a championship side is offering 10-12k a week, it's a no brainer for him to accept it.
Would you have been so keen to stay in your current role if you felt your current place of work was going downhill and 50% of the colleagues you liked working with and the boss you knew well and trusted were all possibly going to leave in the next few months?
If I were a player at Charlton at any level from the Youth teams to the first team I would be looking around.
I have friends with kids in decent football g academies at the minute who wouldn’t think of sending their kids to Charlton.
if you had the option of a pay rose and getting away from the uncertainty, the lack of drive and the basic lack of u sweats ding of what makes a football club the Duchâtelet offers, definitely be looking around.

Why? As Muttley says above, any half decent kid at Charlton has a strong chance of making the first team.
My son was a the Spurs academy a few years back and they were just trawling. Only an incredibly small amount of boys make it and a bigger percentage make it at Charlton I would imagine. Even if that percentage is still pretty scary.

I'm sure all parents would like their child to a top PL side, but most won't get selected and of those a minuscule number will ever play for the 1st team
After that in the London area we compare very well to the other local sides. Brentford don't even have an academy

similar to my son at West Ham .. But, he then refused to go to Orient or Luton who offered him a place and where he could have developed a pro career .. silly boy wanted to be a big fish in too big a pond etc.etc.

He did get to appear in an advert with Peter Crouch, but in terms of the coaching, we had a horrible weekly journey from Herts, we weren't allowed to watch (just had to wait in a portacabin) and he got no specialist training (he is a keeper). Unlike other parents, his education has always been the priority.
We took him out and he joined the University of Hertfordshire football development centre which gave him better coaching twice a week, and it was local. It was aligned to norwich City and then Crystal Palace and had access to their coaches. He is 18 now and still trains there on a Saturday morning. He is not going to be a professional footballer, but he is a very good keeper and that will give him lots of enjoyment in the years to come.
Less than 1% of all the kids at academy’s make it into any level of paid football.
The sad thing is that the vast % of footballers who get ‘culled’ at a club leave football completely.
Your figures are correct. I believe it's 0.5. When I was a coach/manager in the massive Tandridge League with the catchment of Surrey/Kent and south London with Waterloo, where the likes of Lookman played for a season being a strong side. The Situation where 6 year olds are attached to pro clubs and told not to play with their mates on a Sunday was crazy. (Allowed to play for their school team)
One example stood out for me when Palace stopped an 8 year old lad playing. He was playing a year above his age group. The sad thing was he was released at 14 by Palace and then struggled to get back into his local side as he had put on so much weight after being rejected. His dad told me he knew from when he was 11 that the likes of Wilf Zaha who had recently joined the academy and was a year older were so advanced on the majority of the boys.
Out of the myriad of young players i saw the only one who "made it" was a young female player who played in the boys team till she was 10, before being attached to Chelsea ladies. I'm glad to say now in her mid 20's plays for Cafc woman as a semi pro and does football training camps for young boys and girls. Was good to see her play at the Valley recently in a win against Millwall.
A very long and hard road to make it as a professional footballer.
Lee Bowyer has arrived for his final pre-match press conference of the regular season ahead of Saturday’s visit of @officiallydale.

at the very least it sounds as though Bowyer's contract negotiations are moving in the right direction .. I still maintain that the final outcome very much depends on our results in the play offs .. this goes not just for Bowyer but for all of the many players whose contracts are up for renewal next month

i.e. I'd understand if we suddenly started to play Tariqe Anderson ahead of Lyle Taylor etc. but am sure that wont be the case
ps Good work last night Henners 👏
