Some massive overreactions on here. Still 3 weeks to go and have only heard one side of the story.
If you put yourself in his shoes. He's been underpaid for a long time, has one last contract until he has to re-train and find something else to do with his life. He knows that if he gets injured for a while then he probably won't get that last contract. I think a lot of those criticising him would probably do the same.
I get the emotional aspect of it but I think calling him a dickhead, a sewer rat and telling him to fuck off is a little unwarranted.
Very true. 2 sides to every story. Listening to Bows interview,he sounds gutted and very disappointed in Taylors decision to effectively 'go on strike' and that will be the feelings of most fans, hence the reactions. Pretty sure most wont mean it, its just that Lyle was loved by us all for everything he brought to the club and team and its a big kick in the guts for everyone. He was more than happy to be paid by Charlton whilst injured for 3 months after playing for Monserrat but is scared of getting injured now. Not for me,sorry. As someone has already posted,he, and any other contracted player who refuses to play for fear of injury can toddle off to the training ground, pack their locker and go sit at home without pay. Cheerio.
No. He won't be able to play until the transfer/registration period reopens.
Is this the case? So his contract with CAFC finishes, but he is not able to register with a new club. Does that sound right? Obviously, it's the EFL so anything could happen but it sounds as though he is prevented from earning. I get that he shouldn't be allowed to play for another team in this season, but is there a case that he should be allowed to join another team to prepare for whenever 2020/21 starts.
Shame if he isn't playing but let's be under no illusions where most players' loyalties lie.
He can sign for another club whilst out of contract, however he cannot play for them until. a registration period opens and he can be authorised by the EFL.
Not going to over the top but very disappointing. He should at least play to the end of his contract ie the games up to and including the 30th of June. In any profession you give your best to the end no matter what the next job and how attractive it is. You can get injured at anytime could have happened in April or March. Respect the contract.
Danny Murphy saying that Lyle should be playing, says that Lyle should speak to the club about an Insurance Policy
Has questioned if the club are capable of doing that though
Acknowledges that Taylor is 30 compared to Murphy being 20 when he went from Crewe to Liverpool
Yet says that playing with the fear of injury is not a good place to be in
Insured against losing a contract that doesn’t exist? Sign me up for that policy!
How do you know that there isn't a contract that has already been agreed? Even if he doesn't have a contract in place an insurance policy could be taken out by the club, in Lyle's favour, covering the earnings that he could expect to receive over the next three years following a move. Of course, the club won't do that because it doesn't have proper leadership and doesn't have a pot to piss in. Can't blame Lyle at all and I hope that he gets the move that his talent deserves.
Unless he’s moving to a foreign club I’m pretty sure he can’t sign anything (if that’s what you mean by “agreed”) with another English team until his contract with Charlton expires.
No. I mean agreed. I'd be surprised if his agent has not been in contact with various clubs who may be interested in signing him.
I’m going to put my bitter hat on and just say Half of his goals this season were penalties. Runs around like headless chicken at times and is one big drama queen.
It’ll help me get over it.
I think this is one of those perfect times that one can accentuate the
negatives tbh mate.
On the plus side, so glad Bow sounds like he's still onboard
and has that old-fashioned loyalty and a conscience that seems to be so desperately lacking in the
sport these days
I've loved having Lyle as part of The side past 2 years but I understand his predicament. Dissapointing but like the honesty that he won't be trying his hardest. Cheers for everthing but let's concentrate on what we have.
HONESTLY I'd rather it was Taylor, Solly, Davis that Pratley, Nabby, Lockyer that was mentioned last week.

Not asking for him to stay just respect the contract and then you can leave on the 30th, putting aside the moral obligation of playing as it’s the right thing to do.

To add, I don't hink the Southall still being around helps, I wouldn't want to do anything that benefits him in any way shape or form.
Very disappointing and a breach of contract (surely), particularly so given the situation we are in and his importance to the team, no excuse. Whatever he's had to put up with so have others, this is about his character (or lack of it) not anyone else's.
I think his point that he won't be trying his hardest is a typical wanker's way to let someone down lighlty; eg "It's not you, it's me! You're better off without me"
Reactions like this from players never surprises me, be interesting to see who he lines up for in the new season (2020/21) .. he played a major part in our promotion but like a lot of players who kiss the badge and swear loyalty, he's just another mercenary who's played for a lot of clubs. He knows how to pluck the fans' heartstrings. I can understand his motives. At his age, his next contract is vital for his future, though I can see him as a minor tv/radio pundit in a few years time, he has a gift for saying the right thing at the right time, but paradoxically, he seems to be handling his departure from us very badly. Shame it ends this way, BUT after all, increasingly, that is the way in contemporary professional sports. He'll be missed but that's it. he's not irrepalceable.

...and I should know, I've sent that text a couple of times....
When Hales left I couldn't see who was going to score goals and seemed like the season was over. Up steps Flanagan, usually a wide player but made a good centre forward.
He must have a big move lined up, but I'd really be shocked if a prem team takes him on. 30 years old, never kicked a ball in the premier league or any level comparable to the PL. Recently had lengthy injury. Surely there are better options than that for premier league teams?

Respect is a two way street.
Taylor could have said that he had a back injury but didn't. Given the amount of abuse as a result of the Club suggesting that he had refused to sign an improved contract I'm not all together surprised by his stance.
Southall turned fans against him and Bowyer (who let us not forget happily signed a new contract) did not tell us the actual situation either with regards to Taylor or the embargo.
Don't pay him from the time he stops playing for us. They might well be only one or two games.

As a few of you have already said, if the season hadn't been postponed and Taylor had refused to play, he would have rightly been vilified for it. Would Taylor have refused to play if this was a normal season? I doubt it.
However, the pandemic has provided him with a 'get out' essentially.
Fair play if he didn't want to risk getting covid. I don't think any of us would have held that against him. But refusing to play to avoid getting an injury with 9 games still to play? Doesn't sit right with me at all.
No. He won't be able to play until the transfer/registration period reopens.

Yes, the teams will have to finish the season with our squads from March. No way will clubs be allowed to sign players on 1st July and they start playing. It would create a massive issue.
Not saying he won't be able to sign a new deal with a club on 1st July and train with them, but he won't be able to play.

At least this is in the open, better than Taylor playing and not giving 100% at a crucial time of the season.
Bonne, Green and Davidson may not have the experience but if they give maximum effort then let's see how it goes.
I wonder what the reaction would have been if Covid had been given as the reason for not wanting to play. He could quite easily have used that as an excuse. At least he is being honest about his reasons. If Charlton hadn't been run as a circus for the last few years it would have realised that it had struck gold when we got Lyle for nothing from AFC Wimbledon. It was clear half way through last season that Lyle was going to be good enough for Championship, if we got there, and if the club had protected that asset and offered him a decent contract then he may not have been so disappointed when bids were turned down from a "massive" club like Brentford. As we have seen time and time again over the last few years if you don't tie your best players down with contracts that are acceptable to them, then they walk away for nothing or get sold for a fraction of their true value.

Time to stand up and be counted lads.

Let's hope someone does that this season.
I'd forgotten about Hemed and Aneke.

Carrier pigeon.
Refusing to play for your contracted club when don't even know when you might be playing for your new club seems bonkers to me.
